  • I was in tears when I learned of his death. But now it feels like it does not matter.

to paraphrase Christopher, "Because I can meet Shakespeare because he is alive in the works he left behind."

I say the same for this great mind and thinker.

Hitch, you are alive in the works you left behind. Your call for intelligent honesty will live on in the minds who were inspired by your beautifully woven words.

  • christopher hitchens was man who saw the world for what it was....not the delusion that that theist saw nor bland nothing some atheist see......but that everything is a wonderful world with to many arrogant people but you must look past them

  • I also really like:

“The only position that leaves me with no cognitive dissonance is atheism. It is not a creed. Death is certain, replacing both the siren-song of Paradise and the dread of Hell. Life on this earth, with all its mystery and beauty and pain, is then to be lived far more intensely: we stumble and get up, we are sad, confident, insecure, feel loneliness and joy and love. There is nothing more; but I want nothing more.”

    ― The Portable Atheist

  • @PoppinFreshMe Ha, that's funny. Tell me to what you'll die clinging? Certainty? And your certainty comes from? Just a speck of evidence will suit me. Come on show me how boldly you "cling" to pretending to know what can't be known. Then punch someone in the back of the head for not concurring. The ultimate act of cowardice, but exactly what is replete in our sad, pathetic primate past. I'll take honesty, integrity and courage any day. Hitch will live past his death-this is proof

  • Long live Hitch. Thanks for posting!

  • His wisdom will never die. Great man and I'm happy and proud that I made a video that can display his elegant and thought provoking ideas.

  • @iPerceptive Bravo, very nice tribute! Simply a Hurculean intellect and a ferocious champion of truth-not for the sake of being right, but for justice.

    Thank you!

  • @dwolfcoach Thanks for your reply and I greatly agree with your statement.

  • @iPerceptive I found that very moving. Hitch was the sort of man I think we would all have loved to have as our dad - brave, caring and principled. Thanks

  • @iPerceptive I think you missed the best one (it's a part of the debate from which you got #1) "...the discussion about what is good, what is beautiful, what is noble, what is pure, and what is true could always go on. Why is that important? Why would I like to do that? Because that's the only conversation worth having. And whether it goes on or not after I die, I don't know. But, I do know that it is the conversation I want to have while I am still alive. "-Hitches

  • @iPerceptive maybe really the entire last part of that speech that start with "the discussion about what is good..."

  • Indeed, he was truly a great man. I will forever remember this bright candle in this vast darkness we are living in. Thanks for giving me the ability and wisdom to see the truth and enjoy real happiness. Thanks.

  • bye hitch it was a hellva ride, thanx for changing my life.

  • yeah, like quote 2

  • I disagree with both the premise and the content of this video.

Trying to distill the work of one of the greatest and most prolific writers of our time into a list of his ten best quotes is like trying to isolate Rembrandt's ten best brush strokes. Although the pressure to forsake substance for brevity is familiar to one as media savvy as Hitchens, those with an earnest respect for his body of work who wish to honour him should not pander to the same lazy-thinking, sound byte-hungry clientele.

  • @spin1200s With that said, if required to pick his 10 best passages, these would certainly not be them.

  • @spin1200s Well this is rather unfortunate. However I don't understand how you could dislike this video because the material is insufficient, if you would like to read more than mere quotes, read his books.

That being said, my goal is with these videos is to reveal to the viewer a glimpse of the thoughts by these great authors.

  • @iPerceptive Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the gesture. It just appears that these were pulled from a quote site like Brainyquote and some oft-viewed YouTube videos rather than first-hand pulled from his body of work. It's been said that Mr. Hitchens laments his being pigeonholed for his antitheism and pro-Iraq stance. The subjects of his 40 year career are as wide as any writer I can think of and yet these quotes are so narrow in scope.

  • @iPerceptive I direct you to the recent release of The Quotable Hitchens: From Alcohol to Zionism (edited by Windsor Mann). In hindsight, your selections would probably be both comparatively rarer to viewers and more representative of his body of work had they been taken from there.

  • @spin1200s What the hell do you want him to do? Make a video that is 10 hours long? Even though some of the quotes in the video isn't Hitchens best, I believe that they reflect some of Hitchens most prominent thoughts on religion and human beings. To make a analogy, the statement that you made is the equivalent of not being able to enjoy eating a single apple because there are ten thousand apples infront of you on your plate waiting to be eaten. Silly.

  • @tranamage You missed the point. My analogy was saying that taking quotes from a prolific writer were akin to taking brush strokes from a painter - they lose so much meaning when separated from their context and ultimately limit the quote purveyor to the limited number that stand alone (to continue the analogy, imagine whittling the body of visual art down to contain only meaningful single strokes like Picasso's camel, dog or penguin).

  • @tranamage If you do decide to play this mug's game, it's best to look outside of the small box Mr. Hitchens has recently been placed in, in order to surprise the viewer and challenge their preconceived notions... especially when trying to immortalize polarizing figures in a top ten list of their best quotes.

What we do agree on by your own admission is that the video doesn't match the description written by iPerspective. These aren't his "top 10 quotes" but are rather merely ten quotes.

  • @spin1200s I really don't have access to everything Hitchens has written. I merely pick out the 10 quotes in my website which I find to be the most thought-provoking and simply the best of those. Currently I only have 35 quotes by Hitchens on my website so I don't have to much to pick from. And perhaps you've noticed that this channel is not dedicated to Hitchens, so I don't have the luxury of reading all his books. Anyway I appreciate your feedback and your dedication to a great man.

  • We are all dying, clinging to nothingness.

But some of us face decide to face this nothingness honestly, fearlessly and with dignity. As is truly the case with Christopher Hitchens.

A bright candle amidst vast darkness is how I regard this great man.
