@TheCalUKpride If you bring it fully up it will probably stall the engine, you'll get a good feel for the clutch when your learning. 'Gas Before Clutch' is a good way to help prevent stalls
@TheCalUKpride always set the gas before finding the bite.plus unlike in the video when moving off and stopping only signal when nessasary, always signal when going from one road to another ,changing lanes.straddling lanes just requires mirror checks position early and the cars road postion is the signal to other road users.
Helloo, just a quick question, i am on my 4th driving lesson and my driving instructor says that you must get over 1000 revs before getting the clutch to biting point, But i have been watching some other videos and they are showing that they get into gear 1 then getting the clutch to biting point without getting over 1000 revs. im just a little confused.
@MrKiiza it all depends on the type of car your driving. If its an old 1.0L Metro it would almost certainly stall as it doesn't have engine management. Modern cars try to keep the tick-over constant, so as you bring the clutch up to biting point and the revs drop and it automaticly compensates by putting more gas on to keep the tick-over the same. As a rule diesel cars have much more power at idle speed than a petrol.
I'm sure if this is a good thing or bad thing, but atm I'm being told to completely IGNORE gas when you're first getting the biting point. My instructor says just bring the clutch up, if the car raises slightly then let it down a little bit, THEN add gas. Any thoughts?

@rulebrittaniarfc Your right; If there's nothing behind or coming towards you then a signal isn't always necessary when moving off or stopping. However if there's any pedestrians or vehicles about a signal might benefit someone.
This option does not apply to lane changes or junctions when you should always signal
this is ridicules I have gone for the test and I did the same thing but I was told I have not checked the blind spot,so where to check for blind both shoulders? and what about turning right do I need to check again?
@nuramoboy The blind spot is what your mirror doesn't cover. When parked look in the mirror and identify something in the outer edge of the mirror, now turn your head and see how much your missing. This applies to both sides, but most importantly the right. Just before turning right you should check the right mirror but not the blind spot
@loki1066 lol i mean (CAPS) LOOOOL THATS FUNNY, NO I DECIDED TO USE CAPITALS SO U CAN REMOVE UR IGNORANT SELF AND YOUR USELESS COMMENT, MY COMMENT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU SO PLEASE GO AND GET HIT BY A BUS PLEASE U STUPID FOOL. AMEN :)
lol these make driving look really hard. I first drove a 1.8 ford escort on an airfield when i was 14 and only stalled twice. im 15 now and cant try on the road yet obviously
Good lessons for me, I have a full lincens but I have not touched a car for almost 4 years, these days I need to pick up my lost skills as I just bought a manual car.
Thats because a cyclist could be overtaking you, if you're stationary or about to pull away. I'm a cyclist, and force of habit/ road-riding makes me check all around me anyway, a lot, but it makes me more aware. Happy driving :) (I have my 2nd lesson in about 12 hours, instructors taking me onto a main road, more nervous than my first lesson, i need a recap haha)
Thanks for asking, i didn't have a lesson in the end, his car had to go to the garage, so it's a week today now, i'm gonna have a bit of practice remembering the procedures in the family car, and refresh that way :)
Hi When stopping at say a set of traffic lights, and ur in 2nd gear, can you stop with the clutch down in 2nd? and then change it into first when you have stopped? This would help me alot if someone could answer it for me. Thanks dan
You can dip the clutch and change to 1st when your stopped. But you'll find it slightly easier to push it gently toward 1st gear as the car nears to a stop. It then drops into gear rather than being forced
Use the footbrake to come to a halt and depress the clutch just as the engine nears idle speed to prevent stalling. If it's a long wait, put the handbrake on, gearstick to neutral, clutch up, and come off the footbrake. Observe the traffic to anticipate the go signal and plan moving off when the lights turn green.
Purely for interest, in AUS when pulling out from a kerb, law requires a minimum 5 seconds use of the driver side indicator. (and the mentioned checks). For other signalling requirements including lane changes - 'sufficient warning' applies.
my 1st driving lesson i must had drove about 15miles away from my home n back up an A road went round about 10 round abouts cumming of differnt turnings down a few dual carriage ways and that was my 1st lesson!!! i got my second in about 10 minutes ..god knows wot ill be doing :P
Your first lesson might take place in a nice quiet road.
Here you will sit in the drivers seat and be shown all the controls and many other things like blind spots etc. Then if time allows, you might get to drive a bit
you know when you slowly bring clutch up do you wait till its fully up before applying gas?

@ralucaorhideea If its the 'Advanced' test then you might get a driver fault. They don't mark it on the 'L' test

What you DON'T want to do is give a signal when the car coming up behind you is going to pass you before you move off...
Very disconcerting for following traffic.

The video should be from the driver's perspective and not from passenger's back seat. Hard to know exactly where to position yourself on the road.

My instructor told me if there are no vehicles or anything behind then there is no need to signal?
DisInfoWars 2 years ago
Yeah, but if you get into a habit of not always signaling, you might sometimes fail to do it when there is a road user or pedestrian nearby.
It's easy to just automatically do it every time, and there's nothing to lose by doing it, especially on your test!
batlin 2 years ago 2
do it anyway on your test

Can you select neutral first then handbrake after stopping the car? or should it be always handbrake first then neutral?
bail03 3 years ago
You could do that, but some new drivers mistake a gear for neutral, then the handbrake would help reduce the car moving when the clutch came up.
Always choose the safest option...
martin702 3 years ago
handbrake always first just to be safe.
