  • I'm still shaking my head over the post

    "..is the original any good"..?

With all due respect to Ben Stiller and his efforts, COME ON..!

Re-making 'The Graduate', 'Psycho', 'The In-Laws', 'Pink Panther'..'The Heartbreak Kid', or 'The Longest Yard' makes me cringe and wince..iow; causes me actual pain. The original 'Heartbreak Kid' was/is incredible, in an ironic, interesting character-sort of way. What's next? 'Gone With The Wind' starring Ben Stiller and Anna Farris?

    (sigh)

  • @is2daytuesday

    PS

Promise I won't keep griping about sub-par re-makes..'Father of the Bride' was great..to name one.

Let's see..I suppose the original-original 'Scarface' seems a wee bit out-dated and the Pacino remake makes sense. 'Freaky Friday' wasn't hideous or anything..but for crying out loud! I'm truly shocked that (some) of these actors aren't embarrassed to be attempting to re-make the never-to-be/should-be-duplicated-original(s).

Nothing against Ben Stiller..but enough's enough.

  • Ahhh, Cybill Shepherd. I saw this movie some years ago and fell head over heels for her. Trust crappy Ben Stiller to murder it. The original is a great classic and Charles Grodin is superb.

Cybil Shepherds character would make most men leave home. Watch it if you get the chance. If you know where I can buy the DVD (is there one?) for less than the 50 quid I've seen it for, please let me know. Surely it can be shown on one of the 3 zillion TV stations that we now have cluttering up the airwaves!

  • the beauty of this film is everything he goes through to win the blonde and there he sits at the end back where he started......classic.....and no I wouldn't even consider the "remake".....this can't be remade like A New Leaf (w/Elaine May) It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World and others I cringe at the thought....

  • @silvernail6

I was too busy hyperventilating while replying to the post who asked if the original was 'any good' to scroll further down..but just read your comment. Yes, 'A New Leaf' was awesome. Elaine May's story and her talent are as interesting as her projects. It's really cool that this (at the time) unknown writer manages to pitch 'A New Leaf', get it produced, land movie-star Walter Matthau, etc..etc..

    PS

Anybody know if the original 'Heartbreak Kid' can be seen on YouTube..?

  • @is2daytuesday 2day we're on the same page. But Elaine May was no unknown. She was teamed with Mike Nichols doing comedy way before his success with "The Graduate". Mad World is in my top ten and I must watch it at least once (if not twice) a year. If you're talking film noir black and white classic watch The Third Man specifically the ferris wheel trip with Joseph Cotton and Orson Welles.

  • @silvernail6

ha..I've suddenly turned into one of those crazed, manic zealots..who can't just add a short comment..but has to get all riled over nothing.

But don't get me started with anyone having the gaul and audacity of thinking they could re-make 'Mad Mad Mad World'. Painful.

How about a new-er version of

'The Women'..? Instead of Joan Crawford they snag Kim Kardashian? 'Life With Father' using Matt Leblanc vs William Powell? 'Some Like it Hot' w/Paris Hilton?

    ok, I'll shut up now.

  • @is2daytuesday Well I thought "Drive" looked to be "Bullitt" material but Gosling ain't McQueen. What a disappointment. Instead of at least a tribute chase scene, we're given a minute, and a lot of silent stares that seemingly was what the critics wanted. Whores.

  • why can't you get this film ANYWHERE Amazon are selling it region 1 only for £135 why !!!!!!!!!!!

cant even download it. any help plz :-))

  • charles grodin is a badass

  • This original movie completely

    blows the remake Ben Stiller

piece of crap out of the water.

  • I'm still stumped as to how Lenny would pick the boring Cybill Shepherd over the fascinating and awesome Jeannie Berlin?

  • 25 years later, Audra Lindley would again play Cybill Shepherd's mother on her sitcom "Cybill".

  • ohmygod! I didn't even know there was an original!!! AHHHH I'm gonna have to rent this now.

  • Is the original actually good? i havent seen it. but ill be honest. i did enjoy the remake alot

  • @iamtaylor4life yes, the original is a fantastic film, and its method of telling the story - and its humor - is greatly different than the remake

  • @iamtaylor4life

the original is not good, it's GREAT; see it and you'll know what i mean; eddie albert is cold-blooded and hilarious; i have not seen the remake, which sounds like it has a completely different story line, but I very much doubt it could be better than this--or even as good, greatness being a higher and higher bar for Hollywood these days--

  • @moiraregis ok ill watch it, thanks dude

  • @iamtaylor4life

Charles Grodin was also great in 'The Lonely Guy', with Steve Martin. Highly recommend.

By the way, I would be just as indignant if some fool(s) tried to re-make 'Something about Mary'..seriously. That is a great Ben Stiller movie (well..Cohen Brothers)..but nobody should get any ideas about reproducing THAT with Miley/Hannah Montana vs Cameron Diaz either!

  • @iamtaylor4life

    The original is "actually good."

  • the remake SUCKS compared to this original classic comedy!

  • I prefer the 1972 version because it makes the first wife seem human, admittedly irritating but still human and not a bad person! I feel sorry for her, whereas in the new version it makes the first wife seem like a total bitch who deserves being left on her honeymoon. I don't think that is the point of the story...

  • Anyone who was fortunate enough to see the 1972 original during it's theatrical run has it burned into their memory as a striking example of classic dark (at times VERY dark, there are some scenes in this that are literally uncomfortable to watch) comedy. The first half also happens to contain a fascinating vintage snapshot of Miami during it's period as the "American Riviera." Even thinking about producting a remake of this diamond was beyond idiotic and shows how lazy Hollywood has become.

  • The original version is a 1970's classic....the one in 2007 was crap.

  • @roberts64153 Agreed...If Ben Stiller is starring, it's certain to be rubbish. Shame on the people who remade this classic film.

  • @KellyGreen5555 i hate to admit it but Ben Stiller hasnt really done anything good since 'There's something about Mary'

  • Jeannie Berlin is a comedic genius.

  • The dad from Beethoven? LOL I gotta see this movie now the remake was terrible!

  • Thanks for posting this Robatsea ...Yes, it blows away the pornographic remake... the first 1/2 hour is some of the funniest movie I ever saw as Charles avoids his new bride to chase Cybil ...then dissapointingly sinks into a pale imitation of The Graduate..Which as I'm sure you're aware but not all the readers tha Charlie turned the role of Benjamin down in and spent the rest of his career chasing that dream role...

  • don't feel bad, bubba. The remake was so crappy alot of people didn't know!

  • i did not know that the 2007 film The Heartbreak Kid was a remake of this movie.

  • the original is a classic; the 2007 version is just another remake
