This thing is just ugly. If you look at the London Eye, it's beautiful, like a bicycle wheel. This thing is just ugly, like it was built out of a meccano set. The London Eye is a rather light structure, while this thing is heavy. When it opened in 2008, I looked at the ride costs vs the London Eye, the later being cheaper (post currency conversion). They were dreaming to think they could make a crappy copy of the London Eye and charge more for the privilege of riding it.
@jezeats You may think the London Eye is better looking, and your entitled to your opinion however Melbourne still has the beautiful trams only 150 metres away from our observation wheel, we also have better weather and traffic.
an EPIC FAIL..!!! it was constructed, and operated for almost 2months... before it was faulty and started cracking and had to be pulled back down.... millions and millions of dollars for nothing...!!! and the melbourne government will tell you... they only wanted the giant wheel to compete with Sydney for Icons and tourist... when a ferris wheel is useless in any part of australia.... we have too harsh and damatic weather... besides how unoriginal... to copy London or China... EPIC FAIL!!!!
I did go on the wheel in the one month it ran you can see my videosw.. You have to go in the cabin with others not alone. I afraid you will have to wait to next year to use it now
I WENT ON IT HAHA AND I HAD A PHOTO ON IT HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA U GOT NUBBED and the last time I saw the wheel, THEY HAD ONLY JUST TAKEN THE CAPSULES OFF TE THING!!!
The State Government spend's all the our Money on a silly Observation Wheel . Cracks have been found in the steel the Overseas operators blame Australias heat wave for causing the damage.
Try putting the Money into a Rail link out to Melbourne's Airport Silly State Government
The State Government did NOT build this wheel. This is a private project undertaken by ING Real Estate. They own the land and the infrastructure and they'll absorb the losses, not Victoria.
@3aw77 ING REAL RESTATE built it, not the state government. Try and do some research first. If you go to New Quay ( Waterfront city) and go to the ING Real Estate showroom, there is a model of the area including the wheel and information.
i was one of the luckest ppl to go on this when it first opened.
yes you have to share it with other ppl and yea the melbourne one is the day and night one. but they are pulling it down cause the wheel buckled when melbourne had that 40 degree heat. and ive been told its goin to take another 18 months to get it up and running again.
its not as big as london but it is 120 stories high i think. it cost round 30 to 50 dollars each but its worth it.
brisbane has a baby ferry wheel.. it is boring no one gets on it and people think 20dollars for a small ride is rediculours.... Melbourne wheel seems super tall.. brisbane wheel is dodgy trust me theres been alot of people saying they dont bother going on it because the high tall buildings dominate it and the wheel becomes like only a baby short low ride.
i would love to get on this during july at my visit to melbourne. Can anyone tell me if i could go alone to that or i must share with ather people on board ? And is it actually open now day and night ? i kno there is a ferry wheel next to the city but tiny at a park so i suppose this one the the biggest one just like the London eye ferry wheel. But it seems to be far away from the city views though i think. Someone confirm all this for me would be preciated. thank you.
It is true some bracing members buckled under the extreme heat and will be replaced before the wheel begins operating again. We feel this is unfortunate and can't wait until it gets going again... its a great ride!
Hey cooool video! It really gives me an idea of how fast you are travelling on the Southern Star wheel and what I can expect when I visit Melbourne and go on it!

It's still shut down. The capsules have been pulled off. Vic Gov wasted all our money on a ferris wheel that only lasted one month.
Assholes.

@jack1000 No Vic government has contributed to this.

why did they build this in the first place ?Money can be spent on better things

It's now buggered. Apparently, it buckled in the heat.
It has become art by accident, a monument to the times.
It's big, flashy, impressive, expensive....
And totally fucking useless.

@onlymelbourne Actually it was a design fault. Heat had little to do with it.

Are we talking about the same wheel Yasini?
The views stretch all the way to Geelong, Western ranges, the Dandenongs and Port Phillip bay.
Me thinks, you're the idiot!
ripefruit 3 years ago

Just a plain view of construction and crappy port and west melbourne.
