in canada we still call it swat because thats the genural(spelling fail) tur to discribe the men and woman in a more highly trained unit. S.W.A.T. stands for special weapons and tactics so, the EFT in toronto could be called swat but we calin it EFT. On CTV(tv)nthere is a hit tv show called "Flash Point" which is about the ETF in toronto on there mission and personal life(not trying to advertice) but if you want to watchh them try buying the dvd set.

@SNeyePED Yes they are, although most major cities have their own "SWAT" teams, however anything on a federal level, or something too big for a city police to handle will be taken care of by the ERT. (ERT is the biggest tactical team of it's kind in Canada.)

@dillerandzach Sorry bud, but there aren't even close to 1000 tactical police units in canada. (A lot of times the RCMP ERT cover most of the towns.) Also, Canadian and US tactical units cross-train and work together. Saying Canada is better than the USA isn't necessarily true. For example, a part time ERT (like Halifax) is definitely not better than the FBI's HRT (Hostage Rescue Team.)

Canadian tactical teams do try and get away from some of the negativiity and stereotypes that accompany the name "SWAT". Many American agencies are doing the same thing these days. "Tactical Police Operations" are the correct way to define this work.

You are right, SWAT is only in the US, in Canada various police forces have different names for their SWAT equivalents. The Federal Police force, Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) calls it the Emergency Response Team (ERT), other provincial or municipal forces (eg. OPP and Peel Police, Toronto Police etc.) may call it Tactical Response Unit (TRU), or Emergency Response Unit (ERU), or Tactical and Rescue Unit (TRU).
