  • Thank you very much for the support and maybe there will be a next vid !

    Greetings from germany

  • Your vid is popular on Kingston

  • It is a truely brilliant film, but heres so much in the book that was far too graphic for the screen version. All these episodes had their own macabre names "The dead helmsman", "The burnt man", "The skeletons" and grimmest of all "The burning tanker" Truely harrowing reading. Get it if you can. It will make you feel the thud and pitch of the grey Atlantic, smell the fuel oil and the claustrophobic 'tween decks air, and feel the helplessness of watching brave men die

  • @phaasch Yes, you are right, I have the books in english, in german and the DVD in both versions. It is highly interesting because there are a few ' missing' scenes in the translated book: the episode with the german U-boot-Kommandant ...

  • Jack Hawkins always watchable, great actor and a gentleman.

  • Snorkers! Good Oh! None of my English friends know what snorkers are.

  • Snorkers! Good Oh!

  • this film is one you can't really get tired of. I was so fortunate to have a small video rental store have a DVD Copy. I have to rent this once every couple months.

  • What a brilliant cast - Hawkins is outstanding.

  • Is that the film about the tanker that catches fire after a torpedo attack? That's a good one!

  • @premieresoldat

Exactly those! Most of the shots are on stage, but nevertheless it is rare on TV.

    Sadly.

  • @premieresoldat Try "San Demetrio London" the name of the tanker ship abandoned then re-boarded.

  • No hollywood re-writes here! Nicholas Monsarrat served on convoy escort so he knows what he's talking about!

My Dad did too. he saw things that'd make your hair curl! This was one of his favourite films. He always used to admire the bravery of the merchant seamen who are without question the forgotten heroesof the war.

Without their sacrifices, no Battle of Britain, no D-day. History would be very different and much darker.

In my small way, I SALUTE YOU!

  • @premieresoldat

Thank you very much for the comment. Yes, without those 'backbone' the RN would'nt have such success. For them is another film; "San Demetrio" and as far as I know, the only one about the Merchant Marine.
