It's songs like this and Los Endos that quite literally, take you to another world, if listened to with sufficient sound quality and volume, on a very large screen, while under the influence of small quantities of alcohol.
Never in a million years did I think that Daryl was this good....holy crap...what a solo!!! This and The Brazilian are my two favourite 'Post-Gabriel' songs
@vinny6737 surely you mean Mike? yeah, his guitar work all over this performance is astounding, gotta wonder why he doesn't let loose like this more often.
This has been my "Warm up" Keyboard piece since 1983... (well except for a 10 year hiatus)... Love the bass pedal!!! (And thanks to all you guys who do the drums and bass parts on this... makes my job easier! ;)
Whoot! This track was so cool! I remember when I was younger I made my own music video to this song having a pancake making machine , t.v on in the background playing ``Mad Money'' and a pair of pants and tennis shoes kicking.
poor DARYL...HE'S SO UNDERATED... AS A MUSICIAN, I WOULD SAY THAT DARYL IS ONE OF THE BEST...REALLY!!!!!..GO ON YOUTUBE AND YOU WILL SEE...DON'T FORGET HE'S A JAZZ SESSION MUSICIAN...SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH.
wish they cudve made a more or less movie video of home by the sea..i think it wud b cool to c...(close my eyes n have the pics come up in my head) but wud like to c anothers images
Out of all the concerts I ever saw (including Maiden, Rush, etc), this was the LOUDEST, most concussive bass line I ever heard live. Shook the house. Cheers for posting, awesome
@t3hpez yea i know it takes for ever to learn lol but i got it down after 8 months of playin the song like once everyday lol one of my fav genesis songs along wit domino and tonight tonight tonight
In fact, I like Daryl better playing bass than guitar (he'd never reproduce the haunting charm of Steve Hackett's guitar playing), and here he shows off in all his splendor and glory!
@bmanct Steve had his own thing that Daryl can't touch, but on the other hand, I'm not sure Steve could touch what Daryl was able to bring to the group later on. The riffs grew more complicated because D could technically handle them. Steve's was just...almost ethereal. He was suited to Gabriel, Daryl is suited to Collins. It's a good balance.
@kamwrites THANK YOU!!! I've been having this debate for years with people. I'm a fan of all the different eras of Genesis (well except for the last one, but I digress)...
Steve was all about creating Atmospheres and playing leads that Banks could counterpoint or blend in very well with... Daryl is amazing at taking Mike's studio ideas and bringing them to life on the fly either on Bass, Guitar, Pedals, or hell even Banjo! ;)
I love everything about this version except for those awful electric drums. Ugh! I'm so glad they ditched those on the later tours for regular drums on this song. Just a matter of personal taste I suppose.
So then you're saying you didn't like the original version from the album then. Because this is exactly what was being played. It too you a few years to actually like this song then. Another half ass-ed Genesis "fan". lol
Huh? I liked the album version of Home by the Sea, which like Silver Rainbow featured the electric drums. However, I PREFER the sound of regular acoustic drums; I wish Phil had played them on the album version of SHBTS, and I wish he had played them on SHBTS during the Mama tour, as he did on subsequent tours. The fact that I prefer the sound of acoustic drums doesn't mean I didn't like the original version; I loved everything about it, accept the electric drums.
Phil Collins and Genesis are awesome - I make sure that my kids (11and 9) are well cultured in 80's rock. I'm always proud of them when they can 'name the artist' when we listen to radio stations that play 80's and classic rock. Phil Collins and Sting are two of their favorites - and of course this song is particularly amazing !
Genesis being true to their prog heritage, but with a thoroughly modern sound. Shows what might have been if they hadn't turned into a vehicle for Phil Collin's white soul. They could have been legends, instead of becoming a bit of a joke.
I'm chuffed with how popular this video has become, it still holds a lot of emotional value for me. It's a shame the quality is so sub par, I can't remember where I found it but it's not my own rip. Bring on a Mama Tour DVD!
I was never in the right place at the right time to see Genesis perform live, but after seeing this for the first time on the 1984 "Mama" tour video back in 1985 (in a bar in West Africa), it remains one of my all-time favourites.
when i saw these guys back in the 80's i was in the last row nose bleed section balcony in Phoenix, best light show from up there and the acoustics were amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!
I saw this tour in Chicago. It blew me away. I remember lots of lasers and intense music. It still sounds amazing. And I didn't even think I liked them, until I saw them live. This is my favorite song...well, both parts.
its very good- 1896 and 1992 are improvments/evolutions which is why this still sounds like album, but still very good and sgows Genesis at their peak
Gotta love Phil on the drums. Like a boss!

Forget the shitty 80's. Worst time of music ever, no that's not true. Today is the worst.
But teach your children the spirit and times of the 60's and 70's or at least the music.
But not the eightees

The Mama Tour was the second Genesis video released, the first being Three Sides Live in 1982.
The Mama Tour is set to be released on DVD, with 5.1 DTS and Dolby Digital sound, in late 2009.
