Ummm I thought Hmong worship ancestor and belief in animism. Shaman is a healer and it plays a great part of Hmong healing ritual. Other then that the information is cleared.

@3:05, a shaman journey is dangerous, as far as i know. i was told that the journey into the spiritual realm and back is treacherous, not unlike the qhuab ke (showing the way) ritual. there was a comparatively recent split in shaman technique (neeb dai taw) because some of them could not hide their footprints correctly. my father's techniques follow the vue (vwj) clan, although we are vang (vaj) clan, and it is neeb dai taw.

from what i have observed, and to my knowledge, hmong shamans do not use any substance to induce their altered state of consciousness. a lot of other shamans, like native americans and elsewhere in asia, do use substance for altered states of consciousness. today there are many types of shamans, differing by many dimensions including clothing, songs, sacrifices, technique, etc... the most genuine/powerful shaman is the one that the original siv yis has "selected."

From what I understand there are many type of shaman just like there are doctors who specialize in different field of expertise. Also it seem that just because you happen to be a shaman does not mean that you can just help another to become a shaman. It appears that in most cast the teacher must be at least the same level or higher in order for them to bridge/help fully awaken the spirit joining within the newbie shaman.

To become a shaman is not like going to a session and trying to learn. You have to be choosen to become a shaman, first you encounter a sickness that makes you very ill, it will not get better no matter what you do. Then a shaman close to your family comes and try to guide the ill person into the world of shamanism and tries to get him or her to incorporate and work with his souls and spirits so that they can become one. You can only be choosen by the ancestors, not learn it.

This is why the black hood shaman are no more, not that all of them do this, but most of them do it for a fee and this is wrong. The bench or horse is a great tool for some purpose. The jingle bells are great tools too but has its limit.

Yes very true that a real txiv neeb does healing ceremonies for free because their duty is to heal and keep peb Hmong alive. The bench is the pegasus that the txiv neeb uses to travel through the spirit world. The finger bells are more important than you think, they are the authenticity and proof of the txiv neeb to his neeb spirits that he calls for their aid and that when he goes into trance, if those bells do not come off his fingers, they must not stop in their search for the lost soul.

Actually i disagree with you. There is no buddha shaman, my father wears a black hood, but he still sacrafice animal. Too make it clear. There is hmong buddha shaman in this generation. I am one. Actually it is a mixture of many different type of spirits. Some have buddha spirits, some have hmong king and queeen spirits. Some having spirits that can heal without ua neej. They have these spirit because they've done a lot of good things in past life so god gave it to them.
