  • Bov/dumpvalve is needed to release excess air pressure from the inlet manifold when throttle is released, this stops the engine from racing and keeps everything sane

  • @mightyminor not only that, it keeps the turbo spooled up so when you get back in the throttle, you don't have as much turbo lag as you would with out a BOV

  • actually, the bov was invented as an emissions control device. It has nothing to do with saving your turbo. It does however prevent surge off power and thats what it was designed to do but not to save your turbo. Its so the maf doesnt read the air twice and give you 10 times the fuel you need between shifts or reduction in throttle. I had a porsche turbo that had no bov or intercooler for that matter and the turbo lasted 31 years and still works today like new. no maf, no need for bov.

  • @1JZdorifto thats why rally cars and every other turbo race car never has one, except drift race cars of course but its more of a style thing to them. I had a friend who called Garrett and asked what kind of bov he needed for his turbo and they laughed and said "BOV? the only reason you get a bov is if you like the sound." the only time compressor surge kills your turbo is on power surge that can kill it instantly because its old or too big and the bov doesnt help there so, how does it save it?

  • @1JZdorifto lol your a moron enough said and who ever you talked to on the phone at Garrett is also a moron Its purpose is to prevent compressor surge, and reduce wear on the turbocharger and engine. Blowoff valves relieve the damaging effects of compressor "surge loading" by allowing the compressed air to vent to atmosphere, ppl dont get BOV;s for the sound looking at your name you have a supra so do i and a DSM and have you notice on a mk3 supra you cant hear the stock bov at all

  • @Trollin5k You can believe whatever you want that honda ricers tell you but I stand by my statements. there are car companys out there like VW and porsche that use constant pressure systems that can not be vented witha bov. like my '80 porsche turbo wich never had a bov in30 years but never blew a turbo. thats a big indicator that it does no damage. plus every race team that uses a turbo looks at bov's as "sound modifyers" and I also have a dsm wich btw never had a bov from the factory.

And i have never seen a problem with one of those models of Starion until the Newer ones hit the market with a FMIC but still No BOV!!! lol got to love how ricers hear thats turbo where is the BOV??? Have you ever let you breath out on a cold day? or how abut a REALLY humid one. keep in mind what a turbo does -compress air a byproduct of compression is both heat, and water. especially in humid climates. basically it could be cold it its producing hot air, or it could be very humid and the mist is the water vapor from the air. besides water in little amounts is good for boosted applications, reduces EGTs and cleans as well.

  • Evo has something called diverter valves that should not be substituted for BOV's. The MAF sensor calculates a certain amount of air entering the engine and the BOV releases some of that measured air. The result is that you get less air than the system thinks so you end up running rich. A DV saves your turbos and doesnt mess with the A/F ratio. The only reason someone would want a BOV over a DV is for the sound plain and simple which is rice

  • Its fine as long as the BOV isnt open during idle and cruising. My turbo mercedes uses a hotwire MAF and a Greddy rs and its fine.

    it inputs massive amount of pressure

    into the engine; thus making quick launches

    as you shift.

  • one of the main purposes of a bov is to prevent compressor surge, which occurs you shift in a turbocharged car, all the pressurized air has no place to go (since your throttle body is closed, but the compressor side of the turbo is still spinning). if your bov didn't vent or recirculate that air, it would press against your compressor wheel and try to make it spin backwards. this will effectively kill your turbocharger over time.

  • @wasp010 is is possible to mount a bov to a cold air intake system?...i have a mitsubishi eclipse 3g with an k&n cold air intake system and im not sure if a bov fits to my cold air intake...cuz some people say that you need a super or turbo charger..but some people say it also fits to cold air intakes..

  • @Eclipse03Babam You would have to weld the BOV to your cold air intake and even then it wouldn't do anything but remain shut. There wouldn't be any air exiting the intake that would effect the BOV. You need a turbocharger for a BOV to have any purpose. Otherwise its just a paperweight.

  • @wasp010 it doesnt try to make your turbocharger spin backwards. It just passes through the blades creating a chopping sound. If It tried to make the turbocharger spin backwards, the whole thing would probably grenade in about half a second with such massive loads.

  • @MrSlowSkyline The excess air will try and force the compressor to stop/flow backwards. It won't make it spin backwards instantly, but it will but needless pressure on it. BOV's weren't invented to stop a "chopping sound". Don't believe me? Seal your BOV shut for a year and see how long it lasts. After all it'll just make more noise right?

    Compressor surge is more accurately named compressor stall. basically the compressor wheel tries to keep pumping air in and at a point the pressure differential is too great and air leaks through the compressor wheel. If you look at a plot of shaft speed over time during a shift you wont see it drop to 0.

  • It just depends if it has a provision for recirculation, and where the recirculated air would be dumped, if its pre- Mass Airflow Sensor you can run atmospheric with no problem, but if its post MAF, you will run rich, because the computer already accounts for the air that should have been recirculated
