For someone like myself who didn't live in the heyday of Annette Funicello's popularity, it can be hard to figure out the exact reason for her popularity, but not after watching this video.
@beatlesopera she was pretty, like a real person. i was a little on the young side, to remember too much, but there are famous tales of her "sprouting" womanhood on the mm-club . pardon the easy pun,but she obviously "stood out". she was also warm and friendly,at a time when that was still a cool thing to be.
As I've said, Annette also recorded the song (written for her by Jimmie Dodd) for Disney's record label in 1959, 'Enigma'. It's on one of her albums and a "45 single" as well....
@fromthesidelines Sorry, never heard of any song like this, let alone Annette singing it in her album in 1959 or any other year Her '59 album "Annette" included _ 1.Tall Paul, 2.My Heart Became of Age, 3.Don`t Jump to Conclusions, 4.Lonely Guitar, 5.It Took Dreams, 6.Wild Willie, 7.Jo-Jo the Dog-Faced Boy, 8.How Will I Know My Love, 9.Ma, He`s Making Eyes at Me, 10.Especially for You, 11.That Crazy Place From Outer Space, 12.Love Me Forever
@fromthesidelines it's the same song but recorded a little differently by Annette on the 1993 box set: "A Musical Reunion with America's Girl Next Door [Box Set]" on Amazon. It's a great box set!
@Enigmafan88 Lonely guitar; Is there no one who loves us Lonely guitar; Not a soul seems to care The stars in the sky; Look like teardrops Because I've been crying And the breeze seems to; Sigh as I whisper my Penance and prayer Lonely guitar (lonely guitar); Now our song is a sad song Longing, we are, for; Someone to adore (Lonely guitar) (continued)
@Enigmafan88 (continued) Some sunny day; There may come our way One who will love us; Then my lonely guitar You and I will be; Lonely no more (Lonely guitar) Is there no one who loves us (Lonely guitar) Not a soul seems to care Some sunny day; There may come our way One who will love us; Then my lonely guitar You and I will be; Lonely no more (Lonely guitar)
@Enigmafan88 This was released as a single in 1959 and hit #50 on the Billboard charts and was also released by Disney on her 1st Buena Vista labeled album in '59 titled "Annette"
ah i remember this episode, and as a guitar player myself part of this show inspired me to pick up the guitar that year and learn to play. ;) memories.
I've never heard this song before, but I've heard it in my dreams, it sounded so beautiful. but, what movie is this from? or TV show? and what is it about? I would love to watch it. =)
TV . . . . Disney's "Zorro" television series with Guy Williams as Zorro and Don Diego. A 3-part episode called "Zorro And The Mystery Of Don Cabrillo".
I've looked for this song for ages. I remembered all the words, so I knew I didn't imagine it--I remember when it first aired on TV's ZORRO. Walt Disney gave a spot on the show to Annette for her 16th birthday present (she, as well as most of us, had an incredible crush on Don Diego dela Vega, played by Guy Williams -- sigh !)
Wow! who knew She was a guitar wizard? Starring in a film with Will Robinsons Dad. What other secrets are they keeping from Anettes doting fans. Burns me up! Still find her adorable.
Annette was always so genuine, soft and sexy voice, beautiful eyes and figure. So sad that she now has advanced MS and is almost unable to communicate. How much joy she brought to so many of us through her music and movies. God bless you Annette.
I think Annette was at her absolute most beautiful here, it was around the same time that she was dating Paul Anka(lucky bastard!)and Walt Disney and her parents were concerned that their dating might hurt her image, at any rate,Paul wrote the song "Puppy Love" about their relationship. also in an interview Annette said at this time she also had a huge crush on Guy Williams who play's "Zorro".
Zorro was the best show! I loved watching it in Vault Disney at midnight, you know, BEFORE the disney channel LOST ITS SOUL and stopped showing quality programs.
Like Jennifer Grey, Annette did not need a nose job. They had unique, ethnic looks that shouldn't have been tampered with. At any rate, I couldn't wait to get home from school to see Annette sing and dance and star in those series with lover boy Spin Evans. Ah, memories!
"Lonely Guitar" was written for her by "Chief Mouseketeer" Jimmie Dodd....and it was also a Top Ten hit for her on Disneyland Records, because of her appearance. And this was from a four episode story arc when she appeared as "Anita Cabrillo".
Thanks for adding this clip - Annette did this episode, as a birthday present from Walt Disney, who knew she had a crush on Guy Williams, Zorro himself! :D
I don't think that they are going to show tv series of Zorro because it's have been on along time but now the Disney Channel is not showing like the old tv shows like Walt Disney Presnets Disneyland, Zorro, and The Mickey Mouse Club anymore.
I seem to remember, that the studio version had the guitar played by JIMMIE DODD
(R.I.P.) and it was one of the very first uses of the "Leslie" (whirling speaker) to
give a "vibrato" effect to a guitar, even pre-dating CAROL KAY'E'S use of it on the
1965 Jewel Akins' hit "The Birds and The Bees".

If I'm not mistaken,he was one of the first
