I notice you are using a Mac… Are you using MPLAB? Under bootcamp or virtualisation, or Wine? I would be interested to know if MPLAB running under wine can communicate with a PICKit3, as I can't decide whether to buy a PICKIT 3 (better debugging, dev board) or a usbpicprog (cheaper, works natively with Mac).
PIC24 series and dspics for very cheap application and high school students are not bad but the boards that they provide are really really garbage,
I bought pickit 3 with explorer 16 it did not work can you believe it
eplorer 16, did not work!! many times I had to close and reopen MPLAB IDE for pickit 3 to recognize the chip,
I got very angry I broke the board ,
NOW I have ezdsp F28335 this is absolutely great and fantastic I can write the program whatever I want it fast very fast

@WaterpigMaster
I'm running Windows XP on VMware on iMac. Works flawlessly.

@vm63310 Fab — not an option for myself unfortunately, but good to know it works!

is the PIC soldered?

@molinobeer
Yes as PICkit 3 is ready made development board for doing development. Costs you some 40 dollars.
