Assume these two men had no previous introduction, How did the Colonel know that he was a leftenantt? Uniforms were not as regimented as they are today or as they were in the 19th century. If one was not subtle, they could easily have a more elaborate uniform then their commander. It was more to do with money then rank.

There would've been evident rank insignia in those days. Ranks in the british army at the time weren't as they are today. For example, a cloak or a baton could denote rank, so this Lieutenant obviously had distinguishing insignia to identify himas a Lieutenant. as for the guy below (landovida).....a Lieutenant would bow to a colonel because the colonel is of distinctly higher rank!!
