You have to call the radio stations and request these seldom-played songs. Many DJs and VJs don't even know about this first (and best, in my opinion) Kansas album. I'm old enough to remember when it came out in 1974. I went out and bought it right away!
In an age where many "performers" don't play instruments, it is mindblowing to hear the level of musianship from Kansas on this track. They would have been in their early to mid twenties. Unbelievable. Kansas is, was and always will be the best progressive band on this side of the Atlantic.
Such an under rated song...10,590 views just won't cut it. I wish people would relize that Kansas has many better songs than Carry on Wayward Son and Dust in the Wind(not that those songs are bad.) Any one who think that kansas is a god at writing lyrics say "I".
I know Carry on way ward son and dustin the wind get played on the radio way too much, they need to play songs like Icarus borne on wings of stell and play the game tonight and others can i get a HELL YeHAAA!!!!!!!!!
great song--id 4gotten how good this stuff is--rediscovering it 30 yrs l8r--was KS fan all thru high school. had every album fr John Brown 2 Audiovisions
awesome song probably their best but why is kansas' progressive side so hidden the only songs hear from kansas are dust in the wind and carry on my wayward song they're good but i would stay with there progressive side definetely
@rafaelb1026 you are right in what your saying here. some of what i'm about to say is fact, and some speculation. they were under extreme pressure from the record company to produce a top 10 hit, that the real kansas got lost. also it was the bands own fault, they never had that flash, or the looks as other bands of that time had. they rarely did tv shows or interviews. this hurt them. drugs also played a part in end as did kerry livgrens desire to turn the band into a christian rock band in 80
@ke2323 Kansas was always writing spiritual music from the first album (as even this song it is evident) part of Kansas writing (or should i say quite a bit) was from Kerry ... his writing has always been about his search for the meaning of life.... i think your statement is to broad to sum up that he was tring to 'TURN' the band into a christian band.... he only gave the band what he had at that time...
@MrJoeydano exactly I've been playing guitar for a while now and while myguitar skills increase so does my musical trivia and knowledge , heard most of the works you isted
Apercu leading into Death of Mother Nature Suite - one of the best 18-minute prog suites EVER! It brought me to tears - thanks so much for posting. God, I got to buy that CD again...
Great tune, A band I was with in Detroit, our singer, she wanted to do this and the crowds loved it and it brought them to their feet to the dance floor. The Album art work was fantastic!
What a wonderful song on a debut album! It's been 30 years now since I first heard this. (MTV had yet to launch.) They got a little better sound quality on their early albums than did Genesis or Yes. Okay, those 2 bands were recording half a decade before Kansas...still thanks to Don Kirshner for believing in these guys (and letting them perform 9.5-minute "The Pinnacle" on his TV show?!)
awesome kansas tune these are the songs that set kansas apart from the rest back then, i'll always remember listening to this album when i was 15 years old and loving it!
Apercu? Brillant, Mother Nature Suite? Brillant. But Lonely Wind? Are you kidding me? Thats probably the most flacid song they ever performed. How can you compare the lyrics and vocals from Walsh and Steinhart to Lonely Wind? Livren wrote this song about Reincarnation way back in the days when Lynn Meredith was the singer....
I agree Lonley Wind is one of the weakest songs they ever wrote. However, I think Steve sung it well. It's got some nice melodic parts, but horrible lyrics.
Ah, early Kansas - nothing like it. Effing aye!

This is a great song, which kind of reminds me of a band I've heard a few days ago, Aperco. Hear the similarity at their channel apercoband

APERCU look up the meaning .... this is why Kansas is more moving to me than Yes

I gotta say, Kansas and Yes have similar tallents in depth and diversity, but Kansas rocks harder/hevier with more of a southern touch to'm

Take in all the music and words of this song then look up Apercu in the dictionary. This song brings the concept all together.
Plus the tightness of the band is awesome!

Kansas will remain one of the best bands there ever was. Talk about underrated and under appreciated.

@VIDEOHEREBOB Very true. Sadly most people only know the Kansas that is played on the radio.

Robbie Steinhart was one of the best violinists ever. He was classically trained before he joined Kansas.

My Kansas' Favorites:
1)Cheyenne Anthem
2)Dust In The Wind
3)Apercu
4)Closet Chronicles
5)Magnum Opus

then check Icarus, Song For America, Journey from Mariabronn or Belexes

good tunes all!
i'd to that list.
Magnum Opus
Closet Chronicles (awesome instrumental jam)
The Spider (the worst part of this song is its length!! Prog jamming at its best!)
