I've trained in both Shotokan and Kyokushin. In Shotokan, you'd never grab and square up like that, hell it's relatively bad form for kyokushin but CERTAINLY in shotokan you'd never do that. Shotokan is all about deep stances, it isn't natural like that naha-te focused Kyokushin arts. It's about distance and timing, those flurry techniques are trademark kyokushin.

I used to think Shotokan was the inferior art to Kyokushin. Now I'm not so sure. While kickboxing, I find myself being able to use a lot of Shotokan techniques to fool and anger people, while the kyokushin techniques don't seem to give me an edge. Regardless....

Shotokan is about distancing, there is no way a true shotokan black belt would have a high stance, and not fight in a shotokan Kumite position.
