In Tesla's essay "The Problem of Increasing Human Energy" (1900) easily found on Google, Tesla discusses "The First Practical Telaumaton." He seems to imply (to this reader,) That a Telaumaton should posess a sense of self-recognition, that it responds to a certain "Name." Your Dancing Ghost seems the perfect Kachina for that ;) Like clouds, busted and decoded by Wilhelm Reich's Orgone, she seems to give Binah's sky juice to your Radio. Right on Maestro. (Reich's work remains in Maine, btw.)
Tesla was the first to record regular pulses from Jupiter. It was decades later before the Jupiter triple pulse was proven to exist by mainstream science.
These radios would be perfect for generating the kinds of sounds used in games like Silent Hill 2 (an all time favorite of mine). I can see these devices being very useful for music and sound effect related stuff.
The radio's crystal circuit basically acts as a radio frequency detector. Here's what happens...
The Ghost motor puts out sparks and surges of current that produce electromagnetic waves.
The Spirit Radio picks up those electromagnetic waves through its antennas and resonating LC (inductor-capacitor) circuit.
The germanium crystal diode in the circuit converts the ac waves into dc current, so that we can hear it as audio in an amplified speaker or computer.
The Spirit Radio picks up not just static, but a broad range of electromagnetic and light spectrum effects. It produces sounds from lightning, computers, magnetic fields, laser, lightbulbs, electric tools and equipment like modems...and even AM radio.
It's called a spirit radio because nearly all the original inventors of the radio attempted to receive voices and communications from spirits. I don't claim to be receiving real spirit voices...but I always keep an open ear for such things!
I live in a forest now, but the hum from AC power predominates the signal, especially inside the computer. The gain is raised so high to make the system sensitive, that AC gets amplified too. I try to block some of it with software.
Good question about the sun!
The sun will make sound with the crystal radio...but only when the sunlight is broken to make a varying signal. Straight sunlight, or even laser, won't make a sound unless it is moved over the diode to produce an alternating signal.
Have you tried that with out the paper towel on the motor?

@PerfectParasite
Yes, have a look at some of my other movies in my "homopolar motor" playlist. I've done lots of experiments with this old but neglected principle.

A pleasant reminder that such people exist. Cool project! Beats drooling in front of a telly, or slouching in sports bars. In fact, it rocks!
You know,.. Tesla was quite convinced that he was receiving intelligent signals from outerspace. And then there is George Lawrence too. ;)

Yep... deaf, dumb, and blind. But has a good heart and is full of energy.

i still dont understand what that radio does

Any questions about that?

so the radio looks pretty badass, but all it does is pick up static?? why is it a "spirit radio"?

you should go somewhere like a forest where there is little interference and try to see what you pick up. Also, wouldn't the sun's light make noise?
