Why was he nervously SQUEEZING the damn thing uncontrollably prior to smashing it to bits? It was fake. Also, that was not a one of a kind that was a mass produced blue edison cylinder of which there were millions, still sold today, rather cheap.
@bertskoi YEs, there are a ton of wax cylinder records, my dad has a whole bunch, the one in the video may have been a one of a kind one, like a song never recorded anywhere else or it might have been special
I understand that it could have been the only one. I'm not arguing about it. I am just making the point that some were mass produced and maybe the guy didn't know what he was talking about. Just because he is demonstrating it and thinks its the only one, doesn't mean that it is.
You argued about it the moment you wrote "Albear, yes I do know about collecting these things and it appears you don't."
Your statement inferred that Albear's point about one by one production BEFORE mass production was completely invalid. You presented yourself as an 'authority' on the basis of you owning a machine that recorded the songs into wax cylinders. There's nothing in this video to suggest that the breaking wax cylinder was not the last one.
Albear, yes I do know about collecting these things and it appears you don't. They had machines that used to record the songs into these, and I own one. They did have recorders and juke box type machines that would play multiple 'tubes' one after another and also cut them in volume. If you don't belive me, take a look at the Thomas A. Edison museum at his winter home in Ft. Myers, FL. They have a couple on display there.
Albear stated that wax cylinders were recorded one by one BEFORE mass production.
The wax cylinders in your possession were produced AFTER mass production. The wax recording displayed here may have been the LAST existing copy of that recording in it's original form.If it is ( or rather WAS ) the LAST copy then it is ( WAS ) also the ONLY ONE in existence.
The fact that it is a black wax cylinder, chances are there are more around.Black wax was mass produced If it was brown wax, that would be another story and he would be more than saying Fu#$
I collect those old devices and what he said is not true about that thing he was holding being the only one in existance, before he broke it, that is. I have some myself and they can be found around.
It just may be the only one in the world, well was. Wax cylinders were recorded one by one before mass production. Since you collect them. I'm sure you are familiar with that.
OMG!! Who holds a wax cylinder like that! That is a big no-no! You don't hold or grip a wax cylinder like that at all! Ever!

Hope he kept the pieces. These days with technology like epoxy resin, digital scaning and fiber pick-ups anything is fixable.
