  • beautiful voices beautiful song . thanks john for sending me this . lots of love elaine xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • HAPPY NEW YEAR from Azerbaijan !! 2022 will be InshAllah :)) I wait for very impatiently hehe)

  • thanks for posting and stx for the background information. I remember this tv clip. I guess it was also on East German tv broadcasted. I was so so so happy, cause in GDR we had very few (released as single-) songs only to reach. I became so exited by that surprise. And by the way: in that song seems an idea of the break down of the German Wall to rise: "Who may say, what we`ll find What is waiting down the line: in the End Of Eighty-Nine" ..... Andreas-Ferdinand Thank You.
  • Thanks Andreas - you're right Abba did their bit to help end the cold war with the global popularity of their songs that sent messages like "Every neighbour is a friend" - which did come true for Germany! Bjorn has said the song was a message about trying to set up positive goals for the future, and it still appliies today!

  • Great song I've never heard from Abba, a group I loved in the 80's, and still enjoy!

  • Yes their album tracks were often as good as their singles, they sent very high standards to everything they released!

  • @mbgoring I LOVE THE FOUR CANDLES IN THE BEGINNING...ALMOST LIKE IT REPRESENTS THE FLAME OF ABBA THAT WILL NEVER DIE. -THE MUSIC. THE LOVE. OR THE MEMORIES. MY PASSION FOR ABBA WILL NEVER DIE! ROCK ON BROTHA, ROCK ON

  • HAPPY NEW YEAR 2010 FOR EVERYONE !!!!FROM TORONTO --- Roman Mihaela & Denisa

  • ...it's the end of a decade

    In another ten years time

Who can say what we'll find

What lies waiting down the line

In the end of two-thousand nine...

  • Let's hope its:

    "Every neighbour is a friend"!

And this song is still playing in 2019!

  • Happy New Year John!

    With 2010 greetings!

  • Happy New Year to you also Laura - and what better way to do it than with this most appropriate performance!

  • Welcome 2010!!!!!!!!

Best song for the new year ever!!!

    Thanks ABBA....

  • Thanks - this song has stood the test of time very well and this performance is still shown every New Year's eve at midnight in Sweden! The friendship sentiments are perfect for a new decade as well!

  • thenks men lt's good

  • Yeah - this is the perfect song for a new decade! The sentiments of all being friends are as applicable today as when it was made!

  • Howdy John, This is truly one of their best songs. Looking forward to another year of your great videos. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year friend. Lenny

  • Hiya Lenny, yep this is a wonderful melody with beautiful singing from them all. The simple line "Every neighbour is a friend" could not sum up any better what Christmas and New Year is all about! I hope to have at least one more video out this year, just need to cut down the info I've collected for my latest one to fit the space available! Merry Xmas and Happy New Year to you also. Even the weather's a bit warmer today, after an icy spell!

  • i love this song men.

    really relaxing...

  • Hi Carl - yes there's a nice gentle build up with beautiful singing by Agnetha before they all join in with the singalong chorus which has a great underlying melody!

  • nice video, my friend.

  • beautiful video!!

  • Thanks Cynthia - yes their singing is absolutely wonderful and the underlying melody is very tuneful. This performance is still shown every New Year on Swedish tv - its a tradition!

  • Excelente.

  • Yes - this is just what we need to welcome in the new decade on January 1st 2010!

  • omg..another new year

  • Yes its time to bring the old favorites out again. This is the only festive song that Abba did - and it had the working title "Daddy Don't Get Drunk On Christmas Day"!

  • One of the greatest ABBA songs. Thank you.

And thanks also for the additional information and lyrics.

Almost 30 years later, ABBA is still the best pop band in the world.

  • Yes that's right - this song is under rated being an album track, but when you hear it a few times in succession you realise just how good and clever this arrangement and singing is. I always like to provide as much background info as I can, it makes the video more complete for the viewers. Yes the record breaking success of Mamma Mia the Movie proves Abba are still the best, lots of the kids loved it as well!

  • We are very grateful to you for providing this background information.

Otherwise, I agree totally with you.

  • muy interesante la info adicional.

    very interesting additional info

    greetings

  • Thanks Gal - yes there is a lot of background to this song, it could have been another musical! Have agood day, cheers from John!

  • Ooops!! Svenska is swedish and Sverige is Sweden!

  • Yeah,....as for being a tradition every NYE in Svenska, it should be a tradition EVERYWHERE,......another MOST BEAUTIFUL and AWESOME song!!! 5 shiny stars sendin' your way John boy and thankin' ya for the share! = )

  • Cheers Jose - yeah I'd much rather see this on our telly every New Yeart's Eve than the "hoots mon" Scottish hogmany dancing and stuff we always have to put up with!

  • I can only speak of positives here..because I see nothing negative about this..

    Without going into detail..

(BTW you did a good job with the details here)

all that I'll say is..I'm positive that I like this.

Of course they could just be reading out of a telephone book and I'd still love it..So much for my opinion huh?..anyway..

    Thanks for another great upload

  • Cheers Bill - i could have put this out last weekend, but I didn't want to compromise on my standards and took another week over it - a bit like Abba I guess! Frida radiates plenty of positives with her arm resting on Benny's shoulder throughout and gives positive encouraging vibes to Agnetha when she starts the verse containing "confetti on the floor" - Agnetha certainly looks reflective at those words! And Show Express were very positive they wanted Abba despite having to come to Stockholm!

  • Thanks for this video, and most of all for your fantastic research that accompanies it. I've got to say though.....I don't find those lyrics positive at all. To me the melody and the lyrics are really quite down.

  • I suppose its a two way thing - the lyrics are looking at the negative aspects of the past year just gone in each verse while hoping for a more positive next year to come in the chorus! Granted the melody is slow for the negative verses, but it picks up for the positive chorus!

  • thank you for this. I am so happy to learn all of the back ground you so wonderfully provided. I believe this was an ABBA triumph.

  • Thanks Christian, I was originally intending to put this one out last weekend as I normally do one per week, but I felt that I didn't have all the info available and took another week over it to get it right. The fact that it now charts annually in Scandinavia probably makes this the best current performing Abba single!

  • Honours for this video (1)

    #36 - Most Discussed (Today) - Music

  • Excellent performance

  • Yes this performance is beautifully done and a joy to watch Michael. Its stood the test of time, and still gets shown on New Year's Eve annually in Sweden! Its especially nice than Frida puts her arm on Benny's shoulder throughout - I believe its her birthday today!

  • Thanks for that Jim - a few more fans have got those signed photos as an early xmas present!

  • We may have seen this video before, but it is simply a classic and never gets old. And as I get older, I always hear more from the words that I have heard many times before.....Thanks so much

  • That's right Ann - Bjorn himself said "Happy New Year is about trying to set up positive goals for the future". Once you start to analyse his words you realise they are Shakespeare quality:

"May we all have a vision

Now and then of a world where

    Every neighbour is a friend"

    - that says world peace beautifully in 3 lines!

  • Thanks Jim, the video may have been seen before but my background write up setting the scene for the song and performance is unique and is my personal contriubution to each video!

  • Its Beutiful This Is In My 15 Special Favorites ABBA Songs

  • Thanks Bruno, you don't get groups singing together any better than this. Its one of their best vocal performances and the underlying tune is superbly melodic - especially at the breaks between lines!

  • Another ABBA achievement. Agnetha is great as ever and I Iove Frida's backing vocals. I like this video more than the "More ABBA Gold" version, therefore, this time I'll celebrate New Year's Eve with this one. Thanks John

  • Cheers Francisco - you've got a double reason to celebrate this year! Yes this video is much more in the party spirit of New Year's celebrations than the official video which was rather gloomy with Bjorn staring out the window with his back to Agnetha while she sang sat alone in a chair. I think the director was playing on their divorce which could not be a happy event. The singing here is perfectly controlled by all of them, the guys as well, and is as good as anything we will ever hear!

  • Yes, their voices here are perfectly balanced, that's a fact which I can only find it in other great bands like Queen or Electric Light Orchestra (I guess you realize that I like classic British pop-rock). You're right John, this time, my celebration is going to be very especial due to your kindness.

  • agnetha is amazing as usual :))

  • That's right Pawel - especially where she raises her voice to accentuate the second line of each verse which is outstanding singing!

  • wow John, I thought people were starting Christmas early, but guess I had better start thinking about Easter Eggs!! Seriously though, love this song and this version , Thanks!

  • Its more a case of beating the December xmas rush with this one Bill and giving it plenty of time for circulation before the new decade arrives. I see that Kym has hit the xmas trail too and I got an xmas card from Marielle today! Yes Agnetha's singing is really sweet here, especially at the start of each verse. This version is much more in keeping with the sentiments than the official video where Agnetha sits alone singing and Bjorn stares out the window - I always thought that was not happy!

  • Agreed John and I will have to start thinking about putting a few around-the beauty of Christmas is that it and New Year are traditional so no one expects new compositions-they dont re-write the carols every year and Noddy Holder and Wizzard etc might be beyond new versions now-certainly too late for Bing Crosby!! Agreed, the official version is a real wet blanket and the idea of a John Cleese Mamma Mia is interesting-a brilliant man whos real character is similar to Basil !!!

  • "Does your grannie always tell ya

That the old songs are the best" - Granny was right!

  • Indeed John!!

  • Thanks for the upload and detailed info John

Agnetha finds it emotional here , looking at Bjorn and singing 'ashes of our lives' !

Pity they did not work with J Cleese- would have been interesting

  • > J Cleese- would have been interesting

    Exactly what I thought!

Never seen this version, thanks for uploading, abbafanglosuk! And thanks for all those pieces of information :)

  • They could have set the New Year's celebration party at Fawlty Towers Roman and sung this to the guests - though something would be sure to go wrong with Basil around and Manuel saying "Que" at just the wrong moment!I'm pleased to provide something different than the official video of this song, this version is much more in the right party mood! I always try to give as much information as possible about each song and performance to make videos more complete for the viewers - cheers from John!

  • Yes the 'looking back' words in this song have a ring of truth for their failed marriage Shay. Agnetha looks just as relective singing 'confetti on the floor' and gets some support from Frida. John Cleese has the ability to deliver the right mix of comedy, sadness and naturalness to make a storyline believable, similar to Mamma Mia. He and Connie Booth had divorced for a year by the 2nd series of Fawlty Towers in 1979, but they still performed together for the team just like Bjorn and Agnetha!
