Why don't people create mind maps of set school texts or courses & sell them on the internet surely you have millions of students in the USA following a similar course/subject every year all you have to do is maybe 'offer' a free memory improvement course for local kids with a teachers supervision & you develop an educational product with universal appeal. the economies of scale mean you could generate a good steady return on a product 'for life' to be developed as the curriculum evolves
Mind mapping is a powerful technique and there are a lot of software programs out there that will help you build mind-maps. The advantage of this is that digital mind-maps are easier to expand, backup and share. Some people even use mind-maps to plan projects and delegate tasks.
A good resource I found yesterday was the website MINDTOOLS. It covers a number of learning techniques in additional to mind-mapping, like SQ3R to boost reading comprehension. I only wish I'd learnt this in school.
Thanks for sharing this I've never heard of it before. I watched the tutorial video on mind meister and it looks like a potentially very useful organization and productivity tool. I'm going to give it a try, I particularly like that it works on android and iOS devices. Currently using google calendar and Microsoft OneNote to do my mindmapping and scheduling.
Your website looks very good and I'll have to spend some time learning what you have to teach.
I'm afraid I'm guilty as charged of handing you a negative response Shaun. I tried mind mapping on my 3rd attempt to finally get that elusive college degree. It didn't save me, despite working my butt off, I failed college for the 3rd time. My memory is absolutely atrocious. I could repeat a paragraph one hundred times a day and easily forget it the next day. My memory has been the bane of my life; and has denied me that labelled education I need in order to garner proper respect.
How do you equate intelligence with someone's ability to memorize a bunch of stuff? A lot of times, it's not that I can't remember something; it's just that I have a hard time articulating my thoughts. I guess memorization is a component to intelligence; but I'd NEVER say it's what makes a person intelligent. What good is the information stored in your brain if it can't be used to improve your life, or generate clever ideas???
I try to implement ideas from the book and than I remember it . Also, if something is really interesting I will remember it until the end of my life. Unfortunately, it is sometimes hard for me to remember names, facts etc... raw data...
I'm not sure if being intelligent is such a good thing. I think being shrewd may be more important to making money.
I say all this because I'm probably one of those intelligent types, well read, can programme engineer etc, and I look at wealthy boss' with only a couple of marbles bouncing round upstairs and think that they're the ones who are doing it right and I've been mistaken for spending so much time learning.
Intelligence isn't memorization, but thinking. You can say computers are more intelligent than us, but though we all have computers they lack the ability to think and develop ideas that humans have the ability to do unless you have a super computer program to do so. However, memorization is apart of intelligence, but it's not a true representation of individual and original expression of intelligence. It just means you're good at looking smart the way I see it, but you're not.
@ThyReturner I think you're right. An idiot savant, like Rainman, had astounding powers of memorisation, but his IQ was actually below average. He could speed read a book with 95%+ comprehension, but forget that he needed to put on a jacket if it was raining outside.
good topic for a video. I use mind mapping quite a bit. I draw and write and connect things in my own way. I will look into how others do it so i can learn new tools.
real intelligence is only partly memory. At the core of intelligence is also critical thinking. Because if you are good at that you will be a able to do anything. To quote einstein, if he had only 12 hours to live, he said he'd spend 11 hours trying to figure out why, and 1 hour trying to save his own life. Werd shizzle.
Dyslexic students are encouraged to use mind maps and mind mapping software because it helps the brain process it to memory and retrieve the information easier. I use a mind mapping software called inspiration, it uses different colors to color code each category and has symbols and pictures you can add to your categories for easier retrieval. Tony Buzan also has another good book called 'The Mind Map Book' with Barry Buzan who is the author of 'Use Both Sides of Your Brain'.
I am strange then cause I read a book and I can recall it. But I read slow when I study. I first take a book and go through read the captions for all the pictures then I go back and read the table of contents then I read the book. When done that way for some reason I can grasp the material If I do it another way I don't pick it all up. I have to be interested in the material if I have no interest or see a goal I will not get it. Ron Paul 2012

@ThyReturner I agree with what you're saying. Understanding in intelligence not memorization.
