Like most hollywood films, I hate when fights are filmed like this so that you can't actually see the sword play. You work hard to learn a fight and make it look cool then you are cheated by the director, cinematographer and editor.
@dangerics The people that edit things want a certain feeling not those details. A single duel could make a movie with all of the arranging of things before the conflict along with if the conflict would have only according to one side have involved honorable conduct. This fighting about the fight can then take place followed with plenty of accusations just like on the streets during the present time. A method to end the question of honor is to arrange for a witnessed fight for an ending.
well done!..it's an entertaining swordplay clip way better than most 'look at me i can spin!' retard moves....simply ignore comments from the self important, delusional, and insecure martial cult crowd!...sheeesh...although it is too easy to push the buttons of keyboard warriors..grin

But the argument going back and forth smacks of an SCA fencer thinking he knows more than the rest of the world and finding it more important to show people what he knows as opposed to just enjoying the video for its intended purpose. Bravo on the video fellas, exciting to watch and theatrical. As for realism, if I wanted to see that, I wouldn't watch "entertainent" fencing. Hollywood fencing is much more fun to watch for the average person anyway.
And at no point did I flame the video, I just inquired as to why make a Spanish circle and not use it, except as a boundary. As well, I would argue that most modern fencing is French or Italian based and not Italian. Personally, I use whatever best fits the opponent I am facing.
I have practiced martial arts for over 2 decades, including Kendo, Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Kyukushin Karate, TKD and Historical Fencing. I have competed against nationally ranked fighters and in mixed martial arts. That being said, I believe that I do have some authority to comment on this. The Spanish Circles guards are unique. Only at one point does 1 fighter attempt to hold one. As for it being boring, look up Martinez Academy, far from boring. You should not make assumptions.
Just a quick question...why did they bother to make a Spanish Circle and then proceed to use absolutely no Spanish school techniques, except perhaps when they disengage and the dude in white lifts his sword up into a quasi-spanish guard. But as soon as they engage their blades drop into a decidedly non-spanish position.
As you know, modern fencing came from the Spanish circle. The lines of angulations in both attack and defense are true to and style of thrusting weapon. So is the footwork with crossing and straight movement. It is unfortunate that the Spanish style of fighting on the circle is extremely boring, this is why the two have been combined in the video, Spanish, and what it became.
@timweske I was under the impression that modern sport fencing came from the Italian school, which emphasized direct, linear movement towards and away from the opponent, as opposed to circling. That's why modern sport fencing is done on a lane and not a circle.
@JohnRaptor regadless of it's origins, modern fencing is on a strip for scoring and safety more than anything else. That was reinforced by electronic scoring, which previously needed wires run to each fencer.
I have been engaged in the study of swordplay for over half my life and I have made a living choreographing sword sequences in film, TV and stage, and I fully understand the difference between real and not. This is the problem with most layman. They will read a book and think that now they are the authority on a subject, such as the circle. I think that you might be better served by actually putting the time and effort it takes studying the real physical side of fencing.
This is the first video ive seen where the fencing would have been useless (I know, I know it's stage combat!) and the rapiers are way too short and I didn't actually care! I can say that was one of the best stage sword fight videos I have seen outside of a feature film. You should give yourself a pat on the back gentlemen.
@evileaub I would swear that I'd seen this scene in an episode from the short-lived TV series Queen of Swords (2000-2001). However, these people are not credited for the series' crew. Otherwise, I agree with you, pat on the back and all...
the reason the good looking guys in black lose is cause annoyingly black traditionally stands for evil and white for good. And we can't have the EVIL OPPRESSOR win can we?
I was hoping that the guy in white would get it, but then I guess he did, in a way. Good action, but I would rather hear the guys fighting than the music.

@timweske But isn't the point of swordplay, not to possess knowledge of theory, but simply to survive in a combat situation?
(forgive me, I am mainly a practitioner of traditional Shaolin Kuoshu and Taijiquan, I know next to nothing about fencing).
