  • McKids on NES actually did the gravity thing!

  • gravity guy

  • "...there's no game in the last 10 years..."

Month after Super Meat Boy came out

  • Strider did gravity before this game

  • "see you next time on this is why we can't have nice things", NEVER sees it again

  • @skaldsarrkoo but there is a newer one on his channel with no guest sadly.

  • Is the show canceled or will eventually a new episode turn up?

  • @Nardril it's a 3 part series

  • Megaman 5 is the ONLY game I remember/know that used a gravity feature CLOSE enough with Gravityman.

  • kwing needs to play super meat boy

  • i am sooooo watching this in hd

  • I'm surprised I didn't have this game. Although I was born during the time this game was released we had the near for so long. I didn't get a super Nintendo until at least 1996.

  • Oh, and I remember a health bar (and Force bar) in the hilarious Star Wars: the Empire Strikes Back NES game!

  • Since time and gravity are very dependent on each other, the modern platform game "Braid" that gives you the abilyty to manipulate time deserves some mention and attention =)

  • Hoggy on the iphone use that gravity system.

  • lol on the rightside on the screen you'll see knight wing then in 3 diff boxes it says ftw well it was facebook link twitter link and idk what the w was the knight wing ftw

stands for knight wing ftw XD

  • Game that used gravity in innovative way: Prey ^^

  • "...see you again next time on 'this is why we can't have nice thingssssss..' "

  • Mega Man 5 did this in guess what? Gravity Man's stage!

  • I always remembered this game, and the gravity mechanic. Didn't realize I was in such a minority.

  • I highly recommend clive barkers undying , a great game that almost nobody ever played

  • you should do a wtf is vvvvvv

  • this game is awesome... the person playing is so bad though.....

  • This game needs a remake in my opinion :)

  • dude super mario galaxy has gravity.... and this kind of 2d gravity thing in some cases if that's what you want.

  • Might aswell watch LordKat Until We Win of this, way better then this

  • i believe Kid Chameleon used gravitiy in one of the disguises

  • Super Mario Galaxy did this, sort of.

  • Check out Metal Warriors for the SNES. The game has a power-up that allows you to control gravity in the same manner for a limited time.

Actually, Metal Warriors is an awesome retro game that you should do a video on, if possible (I am not sure if it sold well). It had a great two player 'versus' mode.

    Totally sweet.

  • @sleeknub

Retro Mondays in Jan are getting reviews of Both Metal Storm and Metal Warriors.

  • the Snez

  • something like 'portals' maybe?

  • Megaman games used the gravity thing and they, too, make you beat all the bosses in a row before the final fight. Since they have a health meter they aren't as difficult, though. :)

  • @LordLastDay actrually you cant control it. And the weapon version just flips enemies into the sky not you. Also this did it LONG before MM5

  • @eatkeniii Yes, but if I remember right the question was "Did any other NES titles use this mechanic?" Obviously it wasn't nearly as free to use as it was just in a few stages, not a weapon. Still, it was certainly something that struck as cool to me as a kid! Nowadays it's a surprisingly common mechanic in sidescrollers to walk on ceilings or walls.

  • @LordLastDay true Gravity Mans Stage was UNDENIABLY the best part of Mega Man 5

  • If "And Yet it Moves" hasn't been mentioned yet for the gravity thing it needs to be... that game actually has four way gravity switching.

  • @totalhalibut this is so sad :(

(maybe in WinXP emulation it will work)

  • skiped to the end after first 5 mins the game just seemed like you had to have played it when it came out for it to be interesting to watch now...

  • A more recent unforgiving game (not as recent as Demon Soul), Ninja Gaiden (black) for the Xbox.

  • mckids I think

  • 00:01

  • mega man 5 used gravity ina few places

  • dam its a shame this didnt get much attention, i could really see me playing this bak in the days

  • Prey had some neat gravity mechanics

  • I love this resurgence of retro games :)

  • @lolgina

People have been reviewing and doing retro games online since 2001 mainly written blogs and such. But 2004-2006 is when the bulk of people started doing video reviews of retro games on YT. Only in the last year or two have people been able to do video reviews current games, using products like HD Pvr to capture the footage. Retro became popular again in 2000 with the release of the GBA and sparked people to play the 16 Bit games again. It spiked again with XBLA and the VC.

  • Demon's Souls first boss, only the godly can defeat it. And the boss may have been False King Alant? By god hes so evil. But this looks like a pretty good game ^^ Thanks guys.

  • I'd recommend XCOM Apocalypse for this series.

  • @anthonzi That would be epic, everyone has to know the xcom series.

  • @eseurg

Oh yeah the character that looked like Bruce Campbell XD

The Adventures of Rad Gravity came out in 1990, Metal Storm was suppose to release in the summer 90, but date was changed to early 91. Rad was more Metroid based though, but nice to know other people remember that game. I am impressed.

  • Rad Gravity for the NES did gravity similar to this, but it was a bit more like Metroid in its game structure. You went from planet to planet findin stuff you needed, then going back to previous planets to use the object to find other objects that enabled you to advance through the game. Also, I think Rad Gravity came out before MetalStorm...

  • Yay TB is 26 years old :)

  • Flash game on armor games website. Can reverse gravity.

  • For some reason this reminds me of midnight resistance, on the old commodore 64.

  • There was a jump and run game called "crystal caves" where you got a power up which reverses the gravity.

  • AVGN is the retro king

  • gunstar heroes anyone?

  • fuck, you dont switch gravity to go through the floors :S

How did you not get that?

  • Ninja Gaiden 3 is the hardest game ever ...this game looks hard, but its really not.

  • disliked and unsubbed from TB for "snezz"

  • would love to see some demons' souls videos!!

  • limbo on the 360 has the same gravity control

  • wtf was that ad..., random guy smokin a cigar

  • lol I got a singlemuslim add XDDDDDDD

  • do you have any reviews newer than nes

  • @xBonderx

Yes Im a free lance journalist. I do PS3 and Wii Reviews often 4 a month. Working on Epic Yarn and Goldeneye at the moment. Retro stuff is what my YT channel is known for and what my audience likes the last 3 yrs. TB is WOW and SC2 commentator.

  • @kNIGHTWING01 oh cool. well i quit wow around BC after maxing all reps and i have vowed i will never go back due to crappy pvp and general abuses i will never load that game onto any machine again nor anything from blizzzrd and all activision titles are suspect.

  • I owned Demon Soul's in less then a week

  • @ParagonalForce Aren't you special

  • @TotalHalibut Very Special! Can I have a cookie Mr. Halibut?

  • 5:45 This shows they haven't played IWBTG or IWBTFG

  • @SleepayGui Oh please, IWBTG is one giant annoying gimmick designed solely to fuck you over at every possible opportunity. It is not an enjoyable game because it wasn't designed to be one.

  • this game is as old as me damn

  • What happened to skipping ads D:

  • @Visk777 Why would Youtube want you to be able to skip ads? How do you think it's supports itself, magic and wishes?

  • @TotalHalibut magic and wishes, just like google :D

  • fuc ads!!!!!!!!!!

  • TotalHalibut is not actually British.

  • @Sinbues Sinbues is not actually intelligent, but then, I doubt people believed that anyway.

  • @TotalHalibut

that's why you live in Ohio and were born there and your a sell-out LOL!

  • Metal Warriors on SNES is another game with gravity style like this. Was a really cool game

  • @throktor1 Outstandingly cool.

  • in the hallowen spiret do this on thrill kill... just try

  • If I see one more add for voting against question 3 I think I'm going to vote Yes for it in spite.

  • ad freezes and i can't watch video D:

  • The game PREY on PC and 360, with the Indian and the aliens, like Turok; used this exact concept of switching floors and moving around obstacles with gravity. They also claimed their innovation because they implemented it in the first person genre.

  • @BURLYMACHINE hated it

  • one of the games i liked when i was a kid :D

  • I play VVVVVV all the time :D

  • Beautiful!I miss my console.Every game there had a soul and none of them followed some sort of a success formula.

  • super mario galaxy works with gravity quite a lot :)

  • Demon's Souls is awesome lol. It's the next playthrough's you gotta watch when everyone wants to invade you.

  • awesome voice lol

  • LOL Bayonnetta had a lot more hype than Darksiders. Seriously.

  • Is it? Is this really why we cant have nice things or are you just to cheap to buy 'em for me!

  • Looks interesting. :)

I actually played an even older game than this called Spiderbot (A.K.A. Arac, I think), which also had the gravity mechanic.

  • love it!!!

  • I love the graphics and art style of this game.

  • This reminds me of the mine-level from Gunstar Heroes

  • Super paper mario(the one for the wii, i might have the wrong name) had an interesting gravity thing.

And there are a few hacks/mods of older games that are super hard, like Super Metroid impossible or IWBTG(I wanna be the guy)

But I have to say that you didn't abuse the swap of gravity enough to help make the game easier.

  • oh common Vanguish aint that good at all

anyone can beat that game with half a brain

and story is mediocore at best

    cool vid btw

  • @jepepe01 One doesn't buy a game like that for the story. Play it on a proper difficulty.

  • @TotalHalibut hmm

i play all games that I buy new first on normal and then on hardest dificulty

and this game did not impress me at all, I didnt mind that much that i felt like Lost Planet when not using the 'special' moves but all in all it was too mediocore for me.

The last 6-7 years has been cruel to shooter game dificulty, it all has became too easy, Operation Flashpoint Dragon Raising was great, thats one

if u can recomend some more I would greatly appriciate it, thank you.

  • super mario galaxy (and smg 2) had levels that u swap gravity

  • @Elfitizer Awesome, almost 20 years after this one.

  • @Atafect he said he didnt care when the game came out, just to say any game.

  • @Elfitizer I wasn't critiquing your answer, just the fact that it took people 20 years to use the mechanic again.

  • theres a gravaty changing game called free runner on ipod but you dont kill anything... looks like a cool game!

  • I think "Prey" plays very well with gravity

  • The big titile that pops up in my mind is dead space

  • Idk if anyone here watches his videos, but OTG did a[n] HTSF of Metalstorm. =D

  • i love this game :P

  • this is so booooring....i would prefer a gamers RAGE on this type of games..that would be fun...

  • @aantulis You would prefer people raging at a perfectly good game.

Yeah, needless to say these videos are not aimed at the younger demographic.

  • @TotalHalibut ok whatever man...im just sayin that watchin ~20min of this sort of stuff is booring.spice it up a bit...

  • Megaman 3 did it before this game

  • I don't like the title of the segment =/ It's just really, really cliche. It's unoriginal and overused.

  • @plaguuu

    The name of the show?

  • @kNIGHTWING01 "This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things"

  • @plaguuu

Understood, I don't have a say in it though. Unless I was like a co host with TB or something. But im thinking this series will feature some TGS members. Im guessing I will help out with this more though, since other members don't see last gen or retro as relevant anymore. Then again, there knowledge and game experience is limited to the last 10 yrs, which is fine. But Retro is best showcased by people that understand it or atleast have an open mind to it.

  • @plaguuu I've been using it for years, it was part of a series I started in early 2007. Not really my problem if it became cliche and overused, since I was one of the first to use it for anything. I'm sure you'll get over it.

  • Similar to earlier in the Metroid series eh?

  • Retro guy, play Braid. That is a hard game.

  • @kremlin64 It really isn't.

  • @kremlin64

You're talking that 2D puzzle game for the 360 right? Fun game, but I found A Boy and his blob in 2009 to be a lot harder. So I didn't struggle with Braid as much as ABAHB, both games are hard. But that is a rarity these days. Compared to the 80s and 90s. Im not saying they don't make hard games anymore, im saying they don't make a LOT of hard games anymore.

  • the Ipod touch / iphone game Hoggy got Gravitystuff alike :p

  • firefox and adblock to skip ads. FOREVER

  • metalstorm normal mode is really easy takes a few hour to beat but when you go to hard mode you have something that takes 3 year to beat without savestates

  • @HarithBK

Hard mode is nuts, we didn't get to show it though. TB wanted to keep it 20 min video. MS offers unlimited continues and It is easier to beat then hard more. Both HVGN,myself and many others struggle with hard mode. For the quality of the footage an EMU had to be used. Especially after folks complained about the 1st episode of this series. Only way your going to get crisp bright detailed NES graphics is using an emulator to video capture in High res.

  • @kNIGHTWING01 i wasn't complaining about useing a EMU that is fine but more that if you aren't useing savestates it will take you forever to beat the game on hard mode p.s. love your retro mondays

  • i have this game and it was awesome! in fact i might go play it now

  • OMG People are so noobs that don't use Firefox to skip adds

  • so this is just another "WTF is" series?

  • @thomaswinzy Yes, except not at all. By that logic, every review ever is just a 'WTF is' video, which is blatantly not the case. 'WTF is' vids are blind playthroughs for one thing.

  • @thomaswinzy Nope, they choose good games in this. 'WTF is' is reviews he do without knowing anything about the game beforehand.

  • @Claad2

I know everything about the game we are doing. Its important to have the facts in order to this. Otherwise you just come across as a Noob, pretending to know what games are. That's a pet peeve of mine actually. I wouldn't really call this a review. Its more like a discussion. It was a lot of fun to do though and I like trying new things.

  • @kNIGHTWING01 Well yeah, what I meant was, that you choose a game that you already know is good, and that you already know how to play/know everything about, while the other series is just buying a game and then playing it 'blind'.

  • I really wish he wouldn't make SNES a word. ugh...

  • The game PRAY had similar innovative gravity shit, but it's not as old, may be 3-4 years.

  • @TheMiles1992 its PREY not PRAY

  • one of the games you mentioned, twilight princess had a similar mechanic with the iron boots.

  • come on ppl... its called firefox + adblocker.

  • all these people complaining about la roux at least they arent getting ads about americas failed attempt at a health care system when they live on the opposite end of the world....

  • Awesome!

  • I remember R type.

    Always loved the series.

Rtype delta for the ps1 was my favourite.

The graphics were great and there were some really monsterously hard to dodge boss attacks.

  • really enjoying this series! its always nice to find little gems in gaming. props to you guys!

  • Dead Space uses it nowerdays

  • um mario galaxy..

  • Yea, if you guys like brutally "challenging" old games because of how little you have to work with, play Silver Surfer.

I like today's games where I don't have to spend dozens of hours to become and expert at a game just to beat it. Games should be relaxing, not some punishing chore. That's why they call it a "game" and not a "job".

  • @njdss4 It's not the destination, but the journey. (^_^)V

  • I was 2 Y/o

  • @TotalHalibut Sonic 3 had this is some later stages

  • I remember thsi game i got it when it came out if FRICKEN LOVED IT! and IT IS BRUTAL!

  • I remember thsi game i got it when it came out if FRICKEN LOVED IT!

  • Hi Prey use gravity sytem.

  • That game was crazy! I had a headache by the time you guys were done playing it. D:

  • So much of this reminds me of Gunstar Heroes. The gravity change for the mining cart level, the boss that changes forms, fighting all the bosses again at the end. Except for Gunstar Heroes all the bosses at the end were different in a lot of ways from their earlier (easier) counterparts.

  • at 14:06 wow suicide power up

  • Try Sparta Total War or Ninja Gaiden 2

  • The earliest game I can remember playing with a Gravity Feature was the last level of Sonic 3 And Knuckles in the Death-Egg. Suddenly getting hit with the reversed gravity in that after not having it for so long throws you off... and makes you fall in a bottomless pit or three.

  • @omgimapure1 Use Firefox run Adblock Plus (all free) and never see another add EVER again on Youtube, so stop complaining!!!

  • AVGN should join the TGS and rock out these retro games we all love and remember!

  • @FrodanFTW

James is contracted to Screwattack and Gametrailers. Also he does complain reviews. Which Ive been trying to ask his company over the yrs, if its just a an act of IF he just can't beat those games. I know for a fact if he reviewed this game, it would a get a bad review from him. He doesn't look at the cons and pros of each game...just torches them. I can name dozens of games he has reviewed wrong! He has also influenced alot of people on the net to hate the same games he does.

  • @kNIGHTWING01 That's a rough estimation James (AVGN). He torches games, yes, but with reason. His reviews skew towards the negative because that's his style. It's like watching pro-wrestling. Extreme and often contrived, yet entertaining. I watch both his and your shows and I have high opinions of you both, even if your styles are different. And as for the influenced masses, that lies on the viewers. If people can't distinguish a proper review from a entertaining show, then that's their fault.

  • @revolverroach

its rough a little since limited space to type. Still on games like TMNT and some others. His fans that have never played the game are quick to call it garbage. It made matters worse when Irate,Armake21 essentially did the same thing. Your right though, AVGN does stuff for comedic proposes, gets angry and does skits. That's his thing I just do reviews, focusing on facts, pros, cons, history, memories etc. Your last statement is dead on though and a lot of wisdom in those words.

  • @kNIGHTWING01 indeed the comment text limit is... limiting. the funny thing about the complain reviews is that they make me want to play the game more. when my friends and i see a frustratingly hard game we all think, "i want to beat that", and suddenly, we know what we're doing over the weekend. it's a trait of us retro gamers that the modern gamers don't seem to get.

in any case, great job to both you and TB. more power to game station and game knights as well!

  • @revolverroach

Yup that is a trait current gamers don't understand. To each his own though. Speaking of GK, I should finishing editing that, for Sat episode. I got so caught up to replying to folks on this vid XD

  • Not only that but Vanquished went against Fable III as well.
