@Wildlotuszen I have only tried starting a pit after it has been sitting for a while and it never did sprout. My guess is that the pit will sprout after it has been sitting for a while. It only needs water to activate it like many other seeds. I just have not had that particular success. You should try it then post back to us of your results.
i started my plant about a week and a half ago, i've been changing the water every 2-3 days, like dumping the water out and putting new water in, and i keep it in a well lit place, but i dont know why it won't sprout at the bottom, what am i doing wrong
@THEnickvassalloSHOW The tree will grow as big as you let it grow. Some people only let it get big enough to be an indoor plant. If You plant it outside it will get 30-40 feet tall or more. It will probably grow fruit, but it will take the tree about 10 years before it starts to fruit. Even then the fruit will most likely not taste as good as the fruit you got the pit from.
Hi! I am trying different methods of starting a seed. Happily, I have a tree- now, about 15 " tall.
Sadly, the leaves are turning brown. I began watering by setting in a bowl of water-letting the soil absorb as much as it will then pouring off excess. Also, I moved plant to a much sunnier area.
Should I cut off the brown leaves? Could this be a blight of some kind?
@jonze11 I think you might be over watering. I also think it might be time to move your tree to a bigger pot. Also, when the weather gets hot, take the tree outside. The tree loves the sun, lots of sun.
PEOPLE YOU HAVE TO PEEL THE SKIN BEFORE YOU PUT IT IN WATER TO ALLOW TO CRACK AND THE CONTAINER YHAT HE IS USING ITS TOO LOW THE ROOT NEED TO GO DOWN DEEP!!
@trabajopesado My experience the peel comes off as it cracks. I guess you can peel it if you want to. Nature does its thing. I have also used many different containers to start the pit. The tap root will turn to the side if it encounters the bottom of your container. It is better to use a deeper container. I once used a champagne glass. I also Like the ideas of the galvanized screws. May have to try that next time.
I grew mines 11 years ago, now it's 3-4 stories tall and it produces avocadoes once a year, which is great. There's a lot, but it seems my tree is too big to collect any so I suggest cutting the tree down back to 3-5 meters.
First and only tree I ever grew and took care of haha!
Mine always grow about 5' tall, straight out, then start withering. They don't always survive being put into soil...also, my cats love to drink the water around the pit!
I waited till there was a nice root system growing and there were a few leaves on the plant. I suppose if you have a tap root, you could plant it any time you would like. As for me, I like to see the plant grow before I put it in soil.
wow I am learning from you ..I hope to see 5 of my avocado pits growing one day soon. I am from Taiwan so not sure will it grow or not due to an unstable climate so hot so cold...crazy weather over here.. Mike
Thats a good question. Seems to be better to have more than one tree. The older the tree, the more flowers, the better it is at pollinating itself. So you don't necessarily have to have a second tree.
Does the seed have to be fresh or can you start it after it has been sitting for a couple months?

@lilmamagc It can take up to three months for the pit to sprout. Keep changing the water and watch and wait. You will be surprised.

@lilmamagc drop them into a container with good soil..water and watch them sprout

@trabajopesado
Okay - I'll try one with each method to see which one works best. I Love Avocados and have been wondering how to grow a tree from a pit.
Thanks.

When the pit starts to crack, do you take off the skin thats on the pit or do you leave it on it?
