  • If you view this through the lens of conflict theory, then it makes sense. The foundation of society isn't the family, it's the class structure. For example, one thing that decreases the ability of couples to get married is the necessity to have two income earners. This was caused by the fact that while productivity was rising, workers were being paid less, and expected to buy the same amount of stuff. This shows that the family isn't the foundation - it changes with the economy.

  • Reminds me of structural functionalism. Nuclear family = nucleus (building block) of society. I thought people abandoned this mode of thinking a long time ago....
