Well yes, but think about how much work it would have been for them to think of an actual arc expansion showing the 3rd's accomplishments! So, instead we waste chapters and pages and we get craploads of flashbacks! And better on what account? He is certaintly stronger as a whole yes, but he was also alot older, and did have much more experience (since he was hokage twice in reality). And the village was in a time of peace at the time, when tsunade came in you have akatsuki and what have you.

Even if he dies (which i hope he will) he will go down doing something good, like killing Madara. I'm not saying there's any logic, but Naruto has to keep his promise for a happy end, which this manga will have. (Kudos for kishimoto if he makes it end bad, but he won't do that, he'd be killed by naruto fans)

Naruto can't become a realistic character that get's over the death of a friend whom he only knew for a year or so and that tried to kill everyone he knew. Naruto has to do the impossible, as all leads in shonen mangas have to. Still, it would be much more fascinating to see him kill Sasuke, but i just can't see it happening in this type of manga. EVER.
