  • nice video, i have a question i caught a garter snake and they're about 1 and a half feet they're full grown. but i dont know what to feed it pinky mice, or mice, i know that snakes can eat something wider than their head, i had a ball python as a kid, but what should i feed it. ive seen alsorts of stuff once i picked one up by the tail and it puked out a bananna slug, if you could help me that would be awsome.

  • GOOD JOB!

your awesome not feeding it live prey :3 except for the worms... but there worms so :P

  • i gotta wc wormsnake 2 days ago ima try to feed it soon, i dont see any mites though will the rest of my collection be alright if they come into contact or do they have lots of internal parasites that will kill my other reptiles?

  • how do you get them to stop musking, is it preventable? by musking I mean the smelly fluid that they secrete when scared.

  • i have the best food 4 snakes a M1A1 tommy gun YEAH

  • kool i may be getting one in like 2 to 4 weeks so thanks man

  • awesome man i just caught 1 about eight inches 2 day but i have boas so i might try to feed it frozen thawed pinkys if it will show a feeding response

  • mean i saw 1 at the pet store it was going to get eaten!!!!!!!

  • hi i am planing to buy a garter and it's my first time buying a snake so do you think its a goood snake because i have a 11 year old kid in the house so i want him to be safe.

  • Are you sure you're not the 11 year old kid?

  • dont worry if he/she does get bit it feels like sandpaper and they are VERY docile

  • whats the best food for a wild breeder garden snake and how many grams do they get and how many grams do they need to be to breed?

  • i want 1 so bad but my mean dad wont

  • Hey, What do you keep the tempature at?

  • so garter snakes do eat pinkie mice..i knew it!! i hav a garter snake and i did research to care for it properly but my mom wont let me feed it mice cuz Petco said they cant eat mice only crkickets and fish...thats a bad diet i kno..but im gunna show my mom this vid!!!

  • Very cool garter you have, its sweet that you caught him yourself!

  • what worms do u feed it and were do u get it from

  • i have a little garter snake, it is about a foot long, and not very wide, i think it is still a baby, im not sure what to feed it, and i havent had much luck feeding it earthworms, i leave a bowl for it to soak in, and to fish in for little minnows i found in my neighborhood creek, havent seen it eat anything out of there, i put him in the water and he wiggles out as fast as he possibly can, i dont know if he will learn to fish for them, what do i do?

  • if it doesnt eat in a week, let it go.

some snakes do not transition to domestic life well.

better to let it go, and find another.

but it is late in the season in the northern USA, find your snake next year if you are in northern USA.

the snakes are preparing for brumation, and hence, may not be eating.

    bitter

  • its ok now, it is eating little worms, and i got your other thing that they can eat pinkys, im just curious, could i find a pinky mouse at a pet store, such as petsmart, if you have them where you are, and if not where could i get one? then would a pet store sell under tank heaters?

  • i fed mine minnows. she loved em. i would put em in the bathroom sink and she'd go to town. she was pregnant when i found her she fad 32 babies and not one of em ever ate.

  • @brenemanaman they eat Worms, goldfish, and small pinky mice.

  • @brenemanaman your snake will probably like frogs and crickets that it can catch on it's own

  • @brenemanaman Garter snakes usually tend to prefer something on the dryer side, like crickets and small bugs like that. They enjoy something warm, it makes it more believable. So if you want it to feel more like it's hunting, soak they're prey in luke-warm or hot water.

  • would a foot long baby garter snake be able to eat either pinkys, little frogs, earthworms, or minnows? and with minnows should i keep them live in a water bowl for him whenever he wants it.

  • yes, a foot long garter can eat small pinkie mice.

feed live if the snake is having trouble taking the dead pinkie mice.

worms are easy. follow my care sheet to help transition to pinkie mice.

live frogs and fish will work, but try to transition to pinkie mice.

read my care sheet, it is all there.

  • i was gunna get a garter snake from camping but i had to let it go

  • one more thing does he have to have pinky's?

  • no. but mice offer complete nutrition. in the wild, they eat frogs, toads, worms, and fish.

i know they love frogs and baby bluegill.

    bitter

  • i just got one today. is it okay for him to be on eco earth?

  • i dont know what eco earth is? bedding should be dry, dust free, scent free, and suber absorbent. pulp is hard to beat. it is cheap and abundant.

    bitter

  • eco earth is pretty much soil that holds moisture..

  • nice vid

  • Aw so cute!

There waayy cuter then Ball Pythons.

No offense but they look weird to me. o_O

He he I can't wait to get my snake! =D

  • so can i feed mine pinkies then, hes 19 inches long.

and what should i feed to my babies theyre like 4-5 inches long

  • yes, your 19 inch long snake can eat pinkies!!!!

use garden worms to feed your babies. becareful if feeding them in a group.

    bitter

  • k thanks

  • helped me alot

  • LMAO! the imagination movers song!!!!!!!!!XD

  • ive had a two foot garter snake all i had to do is catch a 1 1/2 inch leopard frog for it and the next morning it would be gone

  • Sweet. I have a Creamsicle Corn. Beautiful little snake you have there, Mr. Bitter. Awesome videos. 5 out of 5 stars.

    Mark

  • what can u feed these guys full grown i caught one today, i never been bit by a snake so im quite nervous to pick him up cuz he bit the poll i caught him with what size enclosure do u reccomend?

  • for a full grown garter, i recommend a 36 inch by 18 inch foot-print. catching a full grown garter snake may present some feeding challenges. they eat primarily fish, frogs, and toads. some eat mice. sounds like you have to go catch him some food. if he is hard to feed, let him go.

catch a baby garter instead, and start with worms, then transition to mice. read my care sheet which is on the info section on the right hand side of this web page.

  • Umm... QUESTION! What do I feed a hatchling... I have a baby that is the size of a tooth pick... I have a video of it ... and I can't find anything that's small enough for it to eat... except baby bugs that are like tiny ... I've never seen a snake so small Ican't even find one on youtube the size of the toothpick baby I found (I have small hands)

  • well that sounds like one tiny baby eastern garter snake. feed a baby chopped up worms if it in fact it is a baby garter snake.

    bitter

  • live is OK. but it is not without risk. feed your snake a live toad, frog, worm, fish, or whatever is appropriate. risk of infection from parasites may occur. also, live mice may harm your snake if it is not disposed of quickly by your snake. be sure to feed when the snake is hungry.

    bitter

  • garter snakes are benign. i wouldn't worry about getting bitten. just take it and get over it. the snake will calm down in due time. most of the time they just musk. this is just the way it is when handling an untamed snake

try having the snake slither on your hand instead of grabbing from above. when grabbing from above, this makes them feel as if they are prey. so be weary of that.

worms are GREAT when they are babies. you will need to vary its diet with mice and etc as it matures.

    bitter

  • make sure your snake has fresh water. feed the day before you leave. your snake will do fine for one week without food.

    bitter

  • i just got my garter a couple days ago and ive already tryed feeding him mice fish and worms he just acted scared and slitherd away idk what to do idk if its cuz his new home but can u help me or give me advice???

  • give him a week or two to acclimate. unfortunately, snakes can become stressed. if your snake fails to eat, you have a few options. return him to the pet store, take him to a vet, or return him to where he was caught (assuming it is a wild-caught specimen.)

  • When I first got my garter snake he was about a foor long and he is now about 2 and a half feet long and I've had him for about 9 months. Hes shed 6 times while I've had him and I just feed him a fuzzy mouse or rat pinky every 10 days and a worm or 2 inbetween. He loves to eat. Lol. I just got him a larger tank because I had some expensises to take care of so he had to stay in a 10 gallon for a while, but now he has a 20 gallon long tank and plenty of things to climb on and hes a happy lil guy

  • great news that everything is going well.

  • scent the fish on the mouse. then move the mouse around with some tongs.

    bitter

  • do you know what to do with a newborn baby garter?

  • feed them live garden worms.

  • Can you help me? I have recently caught a brown eastern garter female and she's injured.. I'm worried she's not eating.

How can I stimulate her to eat?

  • i would try live worms, frogs, or fish. if she won't eat that, i would let her go for better or worse.

i am not a proponent of force feeding wild animals. i would just rather let them go.

    good luck

  • i have always wanted a small snake to own and i sed to my mom well how about a Garter snake if i catch a small baby out side (i live on 32 acres lots of room to look) and she sed ok my question is when is a good time to catch a small baby and wher would i look and what are some tips on catching one?? cause she sed i could have a wild caught reptile and i have Garder snakes, black king snakes,Blue tailed skinks like 2-3 or a Wester fence lizard one or two of them i live in Western kentucky

  • babies are born mid to late summer. you can still catch yearlings. they should be about 12-16 inches long. look under any form of debris. you will find garter snakes quickly.

  • Can you help me im not scared of snakes but i am kinda jumpy around them but Love serpets i mean i just love them and i wnat a baby garder snake i live in west kentucky and its in the normals 90-105 F but mostly 90-98F i live on 32 acres where do i look for a baby garder snake?? liek we have a scrap wood pile should i look there??

  • they love wood piles.

    start flipping rocks, logs, anything.

    bitter

  • brumation?

  • in short, brumation is a reptile hibernation.

  • You can feed them insects correct? Like crickets? Or just worms?

  • juvenile garters are worm eating specialists. i could not find any literature that supports insects or crickets. primary diet of adults are toads, frogs, fish, salamanders, worms, and in some instances mice.

  • Cool, Thank you so much :3

  • I need help getting my garter snake to eat thawed pinkie mice.........He will only eat gold fish

  • goldfish are problematic since they can cause nutritional deficiencies. try nightcrawlers. your snake should devour this monster worm. once he is eating nightcrawlers, scent your pinkie mice with the worm. be sure to wiggle the pinkie and make it appear live. the snake should strike. game over.

  • very cute:) don't you just love garters?

  • Very nice, I have a few garters myself. :)

Are you going to make more videos about the snake?

  • nice snake dude!!! 5* Check out my eastern garter!!!...

  • are they good pets because i might get one of these or a corn snake

    but hw big these get

  • they get about 3-4 feet. if you catch wild, you will get musked frequently. the snake will hopefully calm down in due time. i really like my garter snake and i do think they make excellent pets. i just like how active they are. they eat ALOT which makes for good entertainment.

  • baby garters are so cut mine used to be bt now hes 4 feet long still my buddy though

  • i recently found a garder snake in a park and i dont no what kind it is...i live in staten island new york, the snake is about 1 foot long nd light brown.....if u no ne thing plz message me

  • This video is sweet! The clarity and footage is awsome! I really like the red, white and blue " An American Enterprise." touch. By the way can we get a video of it biting you?

  • dude,

are you going herping with me this summer??? i need a baby eastern milk snake to complete my collection.

  • What paddle boat<? Frogs? not a clue. 4 foot garter ?

  • have you forgotten??? maybe you are not who you say you are???

  • very impressive. Do I know you?

  • indeed you do. i remember you about shit your pants when i caught a 4 foot garter snake and brought it into the basement. of course that was about 25 years ago. i never saw a grown man get out of his chair so fast. i am killing myself for not stealing that baby northern water snake that lived under your neighbor's paddle boat. that was a fine specimen. you need to help me catch me some frogs at my favorite frog place. do you remember where that is???

  • Very impressive.

  • check out my garter snake!!..

  • Hey nice snake, I didn't know you were a herpie. Nuge has some turtles and geckos, and I used to have a whole gaggle of pythons. That is cool. You seem to have a great set up there. I also was never bitten by any of my own snakes but got nailed a few times by wilds and other peoples snakes. Oh well, price to pay for not being a sensitive handler.

  • i have always liked catching native reptiles. as a kid, i caught my own geckos in texas and anoles in florida. i caught a collared lizard in colorado and kept him as a pet for several years. ya, i am a HERPIE alright. i just like the native theme. last summer i caught a monster northern water snake. that shit bit me BAD!!! my kids starting crying...and i was the one who got bit!!!

    bitter

  • hey i forgot to tell you how i caught this snake. i used my honda XL 350. i would just go around the neighborhood looking for structure. i found him behind walmart at a construction site under some boards!!!! incorporating my dual sport motorcycle with herping...THAT ROCKS!!!!

  • Can't beat that. Next thing you'll be hitchin' a trailer to that KDX to bring back the big fry!

  • Nice use of the XL! I bet he was pretty subdued after the ride home on the THUMPER.

    Another quality vid, Bitter.

  • thanks dude.

the XL is an awesome road vehicle with light off-road applications. she was instrumental with my local herping adventures. she is discrete, quiet, and stealthy. give me a back-pack and a dual-sport...HEAVEN!!!!

dual sports are the perfect urban assault vehicle!!!
