Hey bro! How are you doing these days? If you have some extra time on your hands (not practising to be the next Buddy Rich, Lol!) Look to the upload Buddy Rich "Drum solo Boston Pop's (5-15-81) where I'm having debate with ungifted gentleman by the name of MetalMike who claims that metal drummers blow Buddy away. Come join the fun. I could use your expert opinion. Thanks. You can delete this post after reading it.
@williamson609 Lol. Metalheads... It's embarrassing to me because I'm actually one of them as well (I've always loved metal). You can count on me though. I'll try to give you a hand on your understandable issue about this dude.
@cadaverr Hahaha! Too funny. Well, it's look though our confused metal maniac had by-passed your informative comments and decided on himself to answer only to me in fear that he would only avoid a good "ass whopping" from two parties. You seem to have damaged him where he had no solutions countering you. Lol! What a loon.
@cadaverr Now the abberation claims he can duplicate the rudiments of Jim Kirkpatrick--in saying what he plays is so easy! I told him to upload his claims......So far, I'm still waiting.......Wow! It's amazing what the superior playing of Buddy does to the mind of some disillusioned metal wonders.
@williamson609 Lol. Mr. Kilpatrick is one of the greatest (and nicest) drummers I've ever seen (I've received an e-mail from him some years ago regarding additional info on a pipe drum instructional video I was interested in). The man has no equal. The fact that he can play incredibly intrincate rudiments at blazing speeds so effortlessly is a testament to the guy's mastery. For that guy to make such a claim, it has to have come from "some disillusioned metal wonders", as you've put it yourself!
@cadaverr Jim Kirkpatrick is a freak of nature. His finger control is astonishing and rudiments are incredulous! (That's awesome you got hear from him). I cannot fathom everyone saying that they could duplicate what he does with ease--such as the case with this confused idiot. Now this abomination claims that, what Buddy did is quite simple--read upon what he's saying now. You'll get a good chuckle or two. I'm trying to recover from extreme laughter. Lol! I think he needs the required medication
@williamson609 He is a big influence on me, for sure. Also look for Alex Duthard (Jim's master). The guy had flawless finger control and an immense influence on pipe drumming as a whole. Regarding that poor imbecile making stupid claims, well, he really needs to take his medication back asap! These trolls are dedicaded dumbasses on the "art of annoyance". Some never give up on trying their best effort to piss you off. I'm gonna check out what he's been up to just for the sake of curiosity. w8.
What is always misleading about putting up these stand alone solos (don't get me wrong, I appreciate it) is that unless you hear the arrangement you're not getting the whole picture about what he's doing. That's why you get guys saying "he's just playing fast", but his solos were every bit as inventive as any other instrumentalist and every bit as musically coherent. Listening skills have deteriorated.
But Buddy never played a Super Bowl so hey, how good could he be?
it's like the old joke, a great jazz drummer dies and goes to heaven, and he is welcomed by St. Peter, and St. Peter takes him to a great hallway with doors as far as the eye can see. Behind each door is an amazing famous drummer, wailing away and soloing for all they're worth. At the end of this enormously long hall, behind the last door, the man can hear the most amazing drummer he's ever heard. He exclaims to St. Peter, "Who is that?" St. Peter says, "Oh-that's God-he thinks he's Buddy Rich!
This footage is from the Sinatra;Concert for the Americas (1978?) I believe this was before or just after Buddy took one of his many heart attacks (take a good look at him, you can see he is not well) but despite that, he always put on a great show. Even after drumming for over 20 years (playing a lot of Bussy's stuff) I still cannot fully master the performance he put on. God bless Buddy Forever
could anyone explain me, why he´s hyped as "legend" or "best drummer of all time"? all i see of him - in every video of him playing i was able to watch - is speed.
therefore every good death-/blackmetal drummer´d be legend too.
If you can't sense this man's huge musicality, technique, finesse and swing by yourself, no onw else will be able to point out anything else for you. Maybe drumming is not really your cup of tea.
i´m drumming for 11 years now, since i was 6 years old, but jazz is just not my kind of music and so i never really thought about jazzdrumming and its finesse.
but i think its never to late to learn, and that´s just what i tried. ;)
I understand. Actually, I have nothing against that. I was always a metalhead myself, very deeply into speed for the sake of itself, but Buddy shoke me like few. Now, Jazz drumming is my new Zenith, my limit and biggest aspiration. My head turned 360 degrees - and I'm glad it did. I can guarantee you, once you start apreciating his nuances, tonal dynamics on the snare, his sense of finesse, technique AND speed applied to achieve great musicality, swing, stick control, man...
Dont be stupid!please Its not only the speed that is awesome, is the quality and the presicion he had to played the drums, i bet you couldnt even play the same notes he did in half he´s speed. Buddy not only was the best drummer, he made the drums an essential instrument for all times. If it wasnt for buddy, you wouldnt know th drums as you know them now a day.
i still don´t see, why he´s that great, for me its not that impressive... of course, i could never play that (probably not in half of his speed), but thats not the point, dude ;)
Maybe your perception is too educated into grooves and steady beats. Jazz drumming is based on time manipulation, syncopations and other complex rudimental combinations. Maybe this simply isn't for you. Its just a matter of being into rudiments and musicality, finesse and swing feelings at using them. And we have all that in spades here, maybe just not your cup of tea after all. It happens...
To say you are clueless about Buddy's talent doesn't begin to scratch the surface of your musical ignorance. Buddy is a master technician, there is no one, and I mean no one that comes close to this man's skill, articulation, independence, stick control, ability to play extemporaneously (that means make up drum kit fills on the spot, spontaneously, without ever having rehearsed the stuff!), and sheer brilliance as a virtuoso drummer. He has speed, finesse, taste, infinite ability, he's a master.

There is no doubt at all. Even the (other) greatest Jazz drummers of all time cried when saw Buddy playing live. It was said to be such un UNBELIEVABLE experience that videos like this only represent a very small fraction of its live effect... :]
FUCK YOU TO THE ASSHOLE WHO DISLIKED THIS!

may i correct?
If it wasnt for Gene Krupa we wouldnt know drums as we know them today.
he created the bass drum pedal
and if there was no Gene there would be no Buddy. OR atleast not a buddy as good as thus shown in the video.
