Such a fine line....the love of beauty, the longing for youth, one's own, or to have it vicariously, the allure and slip into pederasty are all here, in the flower and tragedy also of life and the pulsing breath of a mortal all too mortal condition.
What an inspired choice Visconti has made in the actor to play Aschenbach. We know Bogarde is perfect from our first glimpse of him huddled in his wicker chair. And can one think of more appropriate or stirring music? As I understand it Mann's Aschenbach is in fact based on Mahler and Visconti has cut out the middle man by making our hero a composer rather than a writer.
bel lavoro, davvero....

Aschenbach & Tadju, the old man & the (fresh) sea, me & u.
I adore this novel as well as the film!
Once, at the time, I was this young, of course.
And now, after so many years of seemingly eternal life,
I look back - Ich entsinne mich -
and see - zuletzt scheint es ganz schnell gegangen zu sein.
Is there still time to think about?
