this song reminds me of queen, but i think that if the beatles had a paralell song it would be o bla di o bla da ( universal dream of a wife, kids and a home- one is about getting it , the other is rueing the loss of it ), meantime if everybody likes the music both queen and the beatles created then I know i'm in good company :) or at least my comment is
So there i was in a Chapters book store to get a science magazine and what do i see sitting in the distance a VERY VERY high quality book called "40 Years of Queen" hard cover, hard case, gorgeous silver on black on the front cover and pages full of Queen info and pictures i think "I must have this" but because of the quality of the book i thought "This must cost at least $70.00" so I decide to get the magazine instead. I have now learned it was only $35.00 FML i'm going back as soon as possible
my childhood flashes before my eyes i remember listening to this album along with other good albums on the good ol record player in my parent's living room in the house we built in 1984. I miss having my record player..
brian's vocals are rather unassuming it could fool as coming right out of a dusty old vinyl left from the 20s. honey pie has 1 foot thoroughly planted in the present, consciously experimenting with past but this & seaside, lazying have such a quaint feel but expands the past into glorious vistas. you're simply lost in it all the exquisite details, like a silent de mille epic indeed!
it's a Ukulele-Banjo...very interesting sound...the majority of the sounds were done individually in the studio and pieced together to get that 1920's jazz band sound from the electric guitar...like the clarinet and the trombone..all electric guitar...brilliant work !!
Gosh I love this song! I had the album in 75 and couldn't believe they did this in a 20s style but still with the classic Queen genre. These guys were nuthin' but genius.
If I hear that song, i wish there were only ONE concert with the late 60´s Beatles and late 80´s Queen. 6 (or more) hours of live music with only great, magnificent songs!
Btw.: This song and Beatles "Honey Pie" are very similar, but both great in their own way.
Does anyone else think that the electric guitar work is unbelievably creative (I'm not talking about the ukelele)? Brian May is one of the best ever and made the guitar make so many different sounds. I like the Beatles Lucy in the Sky tribute too. Listen to it at 3:10
Does anyone else think that the electric guitar work is unbelievably creative (I'm not talking about the ukelele)? Brian May is one of the best ever and made the guitar make so many different sounds.
@rden94 Yes, May has incredible songwriting skill compounded with wicked guitar playing chops. He replicated the sound of a Dixieland jazzband down to a T with the electric guitar in this song.
@TheAerochick13 Damn right! All of the guys worked so very hard on this album. I watched the making of this song and yet again, I am blown away by Brian May's exceptional talent, work ethic, craftsmanship and overall brilliance. Plus, I hear that Brian is a truly humble and kind human being! As you wrote, I wish that artists were still like this today. I also wish that there were more fascinating men like Brian May. As a single gal, I could only hope to meet a man half as dynamic as Brian!
@mmotorheadd How do u "accidentally" find Good Company? U need to accidentally find every song on the Night at the Opera album like 39, and I'm in Love with My Car. Then accidentally find all the songs on A Day at The Races, like Tie Your Mother Down, and Long Away. Then accidentally find all the other Queen songs. Take care of those u call your own.
@mmotorheadd We all like Queen here, but I downing mentally and physically challenged people does nothing. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it.
Just a Note: There are no brass instruments (clarinet, oboe trombone etc.) present on this song. All of the dixieland/jazz sounds you hear are Brian May and his guitar. Hats off to the masters. Peace
I don't know why but the second I hear this song, I think of the Beatles (I mean that as a compliment; obviously, as both The Beatles and Queen kick ass).
@AGuyThatPlaysGames I've often seen a lot of parallels between the Beatles and Queen. Queen was certainly more dramatic with Freddie out front. but both bands were full of not only great musicians, but great song writers, and singers. And both bands played songs in so many different styles and genres. Queen was certainly influenced by the Beatles.
I respectfully disagree. I think it's a tie between Queen's A Night at the Opera & The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. But that's just me.
this song showed the wide range of musical style that Queen was capable of performing. Not to many rock groups were able to do that. Thanks for posting. One of my Queen Faves!
@Lewis1982 Brian's vocals are similar to McCartney's, I agree - however I don't think the Beatles could have pulled off this guitar solo as well as Brian May. I respect your opinion, but Brian May is a superior guitarist.
@Haloplayer20 They pulled off a 20's/30's vibe without making it sound corny or pretentious. Only the Beatles ever did the same. So, yes, it could have easily been a Beatles song, and that's a fact.
One of my -favorite- Queen tracks, and a testament to the incredible musicianship of Brian May. All of the instruments you hear in that "jazz band" are his guitar, folks!
The beatles would have dream of writing a song like this.
