  • There's no doubt that the conductor is definitely in charge of this performance.

Still, I know every single word of this aria, and yet couldn't understand a single word she sings once the aria waxes "operatic." Her diction is starting to resemble Sutherland's, but she doesn't possess the glorious sound Sutherland made. Also the tongue movements (4:04) tied to her sustained notes indicates vocal problems are developing.

I would love to have heard her post-performance convo with the conductor.

  • @primovoce1 I hate to agree because I absolutely adore Fleming, but.... I agree with the diction comment entirely, it's in early stages of going out the window if she doesnt start going back to her basics

  • @primovoce1 "vocal problems are developing"? You do realize that this performance was in 2001! Taking a bit of time for those "vocal problems" to have an impact.

  • The character is not necessarily a young girl. Hence the line "for time's flight is stealing my youth".

  • She took this aria slowly because she CAN. She's actually trying to take it slower: Her breath control is a miracle. However, the conductor is NOT helping her by pushing her around. He's not following her AT ALL.

  • Looks like she's wearing the comforter from her daughter's bed

  • I think she took this song way too slowly. I love her voice but sometimes don't get her timing. Still love her tho.

  • Have you listen to Haunted Heart which is more pop? If so what did you think?

  • I fell in love with Dawn Upshaw singing this aria so Fleming's seems a bit much. Fleming is awesome but I think Upshaw's clarity and diction are hard to top. Was this written for a full lyric soprano or soubrette? Anyone know?

  • @daniel01141975 Soubrettes sing it a lot, but that's a very hefty orchestra.

  • @daniel01141975

A Full Lyric..but she is suppose to be a young girl..so often sung by litter voices..but the soaring lines and orchestra call for more of a full

  • @daniel01141975

I used to love Dawn Upshaw but have found her tendency to scoop notes to provide dramatic emphasis a bit much.

  • @carriek911 however Renee has a clarity to each and every pitch and her phrasing is unlike any other, I adore her!
