Chomsky doesn't really seem to understand what Obama was talking about. Obama talks about Regan's ability to 'restore a "sense of optimism" ' and about his 'spirit that transcedense politics', not about his actual political such as foreign and domestic policy. It was more about his candour and ability to inspire peace and assurance
Of course the facts show that Regan used some irresponsible tactics (or maybe just plain selfish), but he did what he did as a leader of a nation- to restore morale
The public airways are expensive and only corporations can afford the license. It's as if the public airways are really private. Why can't the government have a channel where candidates can present their platforms and candidacy at no charge, instead of needing a billion dollars? That would get money out of politics, to a great extent, and candidates can get to work when they get to Washington instead of spending all there time raising money for re-election.
Noam Chomsky deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for his work for peace, justice and democracy. He is good example of a scholar speaking truth to power. In my government job if you speak the truth to mere mid level
I think people give too much credence to presidents. They have no power they are simply actors and puppets. Although Obama is the biggest piece of shit of them all because he actually deceived and betrayed so many people.

I knew there'd be so much ass-kissing going on in the media that someone had remind the world of the doddering old senile dolt's true legacy.

I really want to meet Noam Chomsky. During these last couple weeks in school, we talked about his language contributions of "phonemes" and "morphemes".
What sort of thing is relentless, poisonous in application of tongue, and dumb to insight?
Perhaps an industrial-strength insect. The stupid thing devours you, and there is nothing you can do about it, because its his kind of world, not yours.
I' mean to describe Chomsky, but I guess Chomsky could replace himself with his enemy.
The Debt Ceiling under President Reagan was raised eighteen times to a total of $1.85 trillion (See Table 7.3). This is less than the $3 trillion-plus already raised under President Obama! Raising the Ceiling 18 times during the eight Reagan years meant a Ceiling battle every 5.3 months (on average), with an average rise of only $102 billion per increase. So… does Obama really want to get the Reagan Treatment?
Who the hell is this Noam Chomsky LIAR? Reagan was anti-free market capitalism? What? More unpopular that Carter? He destroyed the U.S. Economy? What the fuck is this commie smoking? Reagan was w one of the best presidents America has ever had. Chomsky was ACTUALLY describing Carter. Noam Chomsky is a bald-faced LIAR.
@aivilik look up the washington consensus and see what sort of anti free market capitalism you are talking but some of the lines i dont agree with chomsky is that the crisis that was talked after he left office does not make sense. sure the economy was in shit but not compared to the great depression or the current economic crisis
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@gnarlyb Chomsky is a socialist. Socialism has FAILED in EVERY country it has EVER been 'tried' in. Chomsky is a LIAR. What part of that don't you understand? The TRUTH part? Obviously. Parrot THIS, numbnuts.
@aivilik You're wrong. Socialism was very successful in Spain before the capitalist fascists got aid from Hitler and started massacring people. And it seems to be doing very well in northern Europe today (which all polls show are some of the happiest places on earth). You should educate yourself before forming opinions.
This is not true, the economy boomed, because of Reagan and reaganomics. Not to mention the fact the he pratically ended the Cold War, plus the people that were being held prisoner were released the DAY that he took office. These are only a few examples. Furthermore, with how he is condemning Reagan, I sure as hell hope he doesn't think OBAMA is a good president.
Hegemony or Survival is a favourite, I agree with Hugo Chvez who held up the book at the UN saying "it was great book which reads easily" and advised everyone to read it.
"Understanding Power" was my first book or his. a large volume, the title is self explanatory, you will when you've read it. .
@TheVeggieMonstah There are several books that are short and very easy to read on various topics. They are all Interviews with David Barsamian. I would recommend reading those before getting into a more in-depth analysis. Then, I would start with hope and prospects as it is the most recent and will be relevant.
@aquaboogieMD oh alright, thanks. i was debating on whether to read hegemony or survival because it is from the earlier 2000's or hope and prospects because like you said, it is the most relevant. i went hegemony, but ill definitely look into the interviews after im done. thanks!
I don't believe America has the economic ability to retain its number one spot anymore, it will most likely be number 2 or 3 in 20 years because its leaders are too greedy, money needs to be circulated around other people in order to generate wealth and for greedy people to understand that is not possible, their brains are horned in on very specific tasks and do not have the available cognitive work space to think about such things. Perhaps increasing living standards is all people can hope for.
@yuri35435 No, no, no, you dumbass commie. How would you feel if the government came to you and told you that you had to sacrifice in order to support people who made a habit of sitting on their asses doing NOTHING? Stupid.
@aivilik First off, you clearly don't know jack shit about real communism, just the idea you were fed in this country. Most examples of communism in this world are far from the ideals set forth by Marx, Russia for example was more "bolschevism" as it was called and China and Russia today are just as capitalist as the US. Meanwhile, you have an idea of capitalism as a free market and/or a meritocracy where each gets what they earn, but that idea is false and has been demonstrated to be so. READ.
@ML4wr3nc3 "communism" itself in Marxist theory is only a term applicable when every worker in the world has united and overthrown the ruling elite. So, even in Marx's terms, communism never exsited on this planet. But your basic premise is accurate, the slander on communism in this country has been successful to a large extent, people are scared of socialism and have no clue what it is, but think otherwise, which is even more dangerous.
Social media like Face Book and Twitter have been used to revolutionize societies. Maybe they should be tried in the U.S. Rewrite and reintroduce the “Employee Freedom of Choice” Act so it uses the Internet to allow workers to request and conduct a vote on union representation in truly secret elections where bosses can’t identify and fire union organizers. Make corporations bargain with unions 30 days after workers vote in a union. A REAL secret ballot to make the Chamber of Commerce happy!
VOTE in 2012 KIDS. When you do vote, remember the comments made here by Republicans and the political right about your freedom of speech and freedom of assembly to protest. @BeantownJim What you say is correct except for everything that chomsky said is accurate and he's an anarchist not a communist and....
Wait, wtf am I doing arguing with a guy called "BeantownJim", 1. what are the odds that he has anything to say that isn't idiotic and 2. seriously dude, "Communist", what 1950s backwater did you crawl out of?
I think I'll leave this by saying that reality has a leftist bias so the best way to denounce it is to call it "Communist" and give no evidence.
@majordbag2 Chomsky could be called a council communist. "some form of council communism is the natural form of revolutionary socialism in an industrial society."
@jimbobanalbeats Keep in mind when I say he's an anarchist it's because he claims to be one or at least a "libertarian-anarchist". Regardless of what he should or should not be called, he's definitely not in favor of what has traditionally been called communism, i.e. the heavily centralized state run command economy form of communism of the former Soviet Union.
