As a singer and as an actress, Florence Quivar is really excelent, but I think that the best Ulrica is the Bulgarian Contralto Mariana Pencheva, who has a darker voice and more impressive low notes.
she is amazing! I had the great good fortune of singing in a production of Mahler's Das Klagende Lied in 1989 (or 1990?) with the NY Philharmonic and Florence Quivar .. she was just spine tingling.. what a gorgeous voice and brilliant talent :)
Florence Quivar is not only a wonderful artist, but a down to earth person. No egotistical diva here. There don't seem to be REAL mezzos anymore of her calibre - only sopranos who can't sing their high notes anymore. Theres' also too much emphasis on looking "camera ready". I guess eye candy is more important than artistry these days.
Thats probably the best I've ever heard this aria done!!! What control and beautiful lower register, good acting too!! Mezzos dont sing like this anymore. Brava
Perfection, I have sister that's 2 years older than me (27) that's currently with the dallas opera, that sounds like this.... well, her lower register are more like andersons'
you could have stopped at wonderful, what does too throaty mean, the voice moves through the throat and a lovely sound results, and where does one go to hear a moose sing??
I never understood how could people at the met react this way when such a fabulous mezzo soprano sang this way. I think she deserved MUCH MORE than this weak clapping. STUPID PEOPLE!
The thing here that is so attractive and exceptional in Quivar's singing is that she has a strong, rich and focused bottom register and she doesn't have to resort to the pushed register breaks as do so many mezzos in order to be heard and dramatic in the lower mezzo tessitura.
U should hear the 1992 w/ her and Leona Mitchell from the MET. WHEW WEE! She sings her face all the way off!!!!!!!!! The one disappointment was Sherrill Milnes
Florence,Florence, what class, what art, so great in this role. Hers is a carefully crafted series of career choices, note how she entends the last low note for added effect, thanks for this post.

@yaletenor I agree. Perhaps they were smoking crack? That's my only explanation for them not standing to their feet!

WTF?? That audience should have gone crazy for that aria?? What's up with that tiny applause??!!

Yes. Wonderful and underrated!!
I would love to hear her Azucena, Amneris, Dalila, Fides and other dramatic mezzo parts.
Seems like Ulrica low G scratches her bottom abilities... :-)

And what about Princess Eboli!!

Florence Quivar has one of the most amazing mezzo voices in the business. As we all know in classical music POC don't get their roses first.

absolutely amazing. NO words. A powerful contralto.

she's actually a dramatic mezzo, incredible extended bottom as well as a high C.
