  • Thank you for the movie!

  • fuck i love this movie. shes so fuckin gorgeous too.

  • Candace Hilligoss was an ultra-babe! She can also be seen in the Naked City television episode "Hold For Gloria Christmas".

  • Personally, I thought this was a piece of art. Really brilliant and thought provoking film.

As a horror movie, I did not think so much of it. It was a little creepy, but didn't really get under my skin like other classic and more recent horror movies.

  • love this movie and the main character is a babe

  • This fit in perfectly with the rest of the movies in my Halloween horror marathon.

  • This movie is full of lessons to anyone doing horror movies these days. Please, take note, this is how you create atmosphere, not by making me go deaf with a loud obnoxious soundtrack and quick jumps everywhere.

  • I like how youtube attributed the Rotten tomatoes score for the remake to this version… :/

  • wow the priest was way too harsh.... it was just some carnival music. Its not like she was standing on the organ doing the cancan

  • thats scary me

  • it dose not get any better than this, drag racing, and a blonde female church organist-maybe I should watch till' the end...

  • Zombies look like "Night of the Living Dead" and "The Last Man on Earth", but "Carnival of Souls" was first.

  • Man ... This was Triple Creepy 40 years ago when I was a kid .... And it's Double Creepy now .... I'll probably have to be super old or join that 'Carnival' before this doesn't scare the fecal matter out of me ... Wicked sound track also ... just listening to that by itself would cause you to be seeing what she saw ... awe then some ... !!!

  • A classic creepy movie. Just goes to show that good ideas and direction are way more important than a big budget and CGI.

  • dammit! i wanted to see the ending and the last of it wont load! SON OF A MOTHERFUCKA!

  • i love this movie! Its really really scary! .......more scary then alot of new movie!lol!!! Only watch if ur brave!lol.

  • typical youtube, get 90% through, and it wont load any more!

  • best credit intro i've ever seen!

  • there is another version with the full beginning

  • fuck ur skinny jeans bitch

  • A great classic spooky film that still has the power to haunt.

If you are interested in a 3D conversion of Carnival of Souls, please go to my channel to see samples and a link to my website.

  • 0:52:09... it seems strangely appropriate that she'd be staring at her hands considering what comes next.

  • it's 12:47 midnight and I'm watching this. great.

  • @alramonjd I did the same thing. I slept with the T.V. on afterwards.

  • Just watched this for the first time. Dispite cheap production value and some horrible acting by a few of the the secondary characters throughout, this film has a genuine creepiness factor which makes it really fun to watch. It has a rare blend of "something" that I can't quite put my fingers on, which somehow makes it work quite well. Will have to find a good copy on DVD somewhere. Bravo!!

  • 13.20 she steps on the gas? seems odd

  • @ssostufveatch

driving away from the face, maybe? I don't know. Pure reaction I guess.

  • Just wanted to comment on this film. I saw this on TV when I was a young girl. It scared the crap out of me. Stilled scared. Not watching it.

  • It may seem a bit slow, but the general creepiness of Mary's post-accident existence and that organ music gets to you. I think it's a classic cult film.

  • Very predictable and slow moving. Not a very coherant story line either. A bit of a let down really I thought.

  • More than anything else, this little gem excels at oozing an eerie, unsettling atmosphere. That's worth a lot more than a few short-lived "scary" effects as seen in any Hollywood formula horror flick. The fact these guys achieved a cult classic with such limited resources really lives up to the old adage, "less is more".

Technically this may seem pretty lame, but the cinematography is stunning at times, e.g. 6:18, 7:45, and a cut at 6:50 to rival Kubrick's in 2001!

  • Candace Hilligoss is drop dead gorgous and it is a shame that she never had the right producer. She is also a fine stage actress and a great dancer. Her beauty will live on forever. Carnival of Souls 1962 is a work of art. I only wish I could have lunch with this wonderful person one day.

  • Who is/was the lead blonde actress god she was beautiful the whole movie I was turned on watching here strut. No doubt one of the prettiest actresses who ever walked the grounds! To bad the brunette sitting in the middle didn't make it. She was just as beautiful! Look at those eye's dammn they could pick back then. Now what do you get? I rest my case...

  • Just watched this, what a marvelous film! Any suggestions for future films to watch?

  • @sdblosom If you haven't seen The Haunting (1963). You really need to. Probably the best classic horror and in my and many peoples opinion, the greatest horror movie of all time.

  • @baserocklove Was that the old film based on a Shirley Jackson novel-with the door pounding, face in the wall and child crying scenes? The attractive arty/sophisticate lesbian who hit on the protagonist? They were the only scenes that scared my (metaphorical) panties off as a kid as well as an adult.

  • @exeuroweenie Yeah that's the one. Still the best damn haunted house movie ever made.

  • im performing in an adaptation play of this at the moment, x

  • For me, it is the perfect horror film.

It's maybe not well done in the technical sense, but the images show a great talent of capturing the atmosphere. The tension in some scenes is unbearable.

The scenes where she sees the man in the mirror instead of her neighbor and the one where she tells the doctor that she can't leave because "they" wouldn't allow, and then the chair turns... it's predictable, but it's delivered in a way that scares the shit out of me.

  • I watched this movie 1,000 times on

TV when I was a kid

  • awesome!! the ending is creepy

  • i love it i live where this film was shot! lawrence kansas!

  • Lovely views of 1950s America!

This is a wonderful film; thankyou so much for uploading it.

  • i wish i could have seen america during the fourtys and fifties

  • one of the great little movies. love the organ!

  • thank you so much, I love this movie. I remember renting at blockbuster when I was like 12. I used to go to blockbuster everyfriday with my mom and I had a weekly movienight. I always got horror movies. this one and eraserhead fucked me over when I was 12.

  • i hate movies that are in black and white

but i like what they doing execpt that i want to see the color or my eyes in the next day will be see only colors black and white like animals!

    nah! just joking

    love this movie

    great!

    thankx for uploading!

  • TheMikejk, will u marry me?

  • I suggest that people with low intellects should avoid this film. It is pitched at a higher mentality than most of you can muster. Stick to "night of the living dead" and such.

  • The carnival is an archetype representing the place where the dead are assembled. Mary Henry's experience of purgatory lasted 8 or 9 days because purgatory is a temporary process designed to strip away lingering attachments to the world, so that the dead person can transit to the next world. Every character, alive and dead, plays a role, but it is too complicated to explain here. Better to watch and try and figure it out or ask someone who knows.

  • By the way, the're not "undead", they're dead. This is not a zombie movie.

  • As per my comment below, the woman is dead but in transition; in purgatory. Her attachments to the world of the living are being purged by the dead figures that appear. Carnival of souls is a "clearing house" for souls. To pass over to the world of the dead her attachment to people and the world of the living has to be purged out. Get it?

  • I had this movie on vhs, very good movie, i didnt see the remake yet..

  • Wes Craven made a horrible horrible remake of this movie that is actually quite funny if you like bad films. I'm assuming this is the original?

  • lawl, i actually jumped when the old man was on the bottom of the stairs.

  • ....niiiice....worthwhile to watch it till the end....thanx ampopfilms!!!!

  • love black and white movies....reminds me of back in the day....when things wee alot slower and a litle more simple.....the story was understood without all the special effects........just as thrilling and suspenceful

  • awesome

  • I love this and have been promoting people seeing it to share the genius of it with those who might appreciate a genuinely creepy film without the need for gore and special effects as crutches.

I've told people on youtube & Twitter, but IMDB, you're next!

  • I love this movie!

I have it on vhs, dvd-black-and white, and color.

    Awsome movie.

  • and color?? how so

  • It's the great, creepy ending when she's chased by the dead that made this movie a B-movie classic. No doubt, it influenced George A. Romero.

  • umm, I haven't seen it, but now I know how it ends!

  • Totally agree with you about Romero getting the whole tone of his film from this one

  • that was kinda spooky.. Cool

  • The blonde played in "the night of the living dead"

  • Candace Hilligoss is the star in this movie..

Judith O'Dea stars in the "Living Dead" movie...

    Yes they're both blonde...

...but that doesn't them the same person.

  • Hey Smaty, I figured that out a few moments after I wrote it but I knew some one was going to take their precious time out to correct me so why take the fun out of it for you!! They resembled by the facial features not the blonde hair alone so thanks again.. :-)

  • you said

"The blonde" ... not " The facial features..." But I think you're one of these folks who say they know somthing...when they actually don't.

  • No dude.. How about they resembled and I made a mistake as humans do... FUCK OFF NERDO

  • EXTREMELY Intelligent response misslittlemoron

  • :-)

  • ah the classic horrors had class, now its all monotanious slashing

  • I don't know why but somehow i find this movie european;) Try 'Repulsion' or 'Mother Joan Of The Angels' - maybe someone else will notice it too.

  • @KasiaBallou Herk Harvey was inspired by Bergman and Cocteau, so it does have a European art film feel... set it apart from other B-horrors of the time

  • @Mirlynne Thx:) I was too lazy to dig deeper;)

  • It is very twilight zone like

  • That was a unique movie.. it kind of blew it for me when the dead chick sitting in the middle of the two other chicks blinked her eyes right at the end of the movie when they pulled them out of the water =P right before 1:23:00 when they did a close up =P

  • oh thankyou for ruining the end jackass

  • Does anyone know the song she was playing on the organ at 20:25 ?

  • lol, i love this film. i have it on a dvd with a whole bunch of movies like this. ive watched this one like four times!! hahaha.

  • I had it on dvd too...I found this movie at a Dollar Tree for a buck...and I also had a few others from the same store...got them all because they were cheap horror flicks

  • beautiful woman, American women had class back then, now mostly white trash cheeseburger sucking fat asses with dirty mouth.

  • this movie is so amazing!

  • i love this movie! its so weird and beautifully done

  • Heyyyyyyyyyyy! Where is the MST3k crew?

  • amen! they woulda butchered this movie :P

  • I think they did a Rifftrax to this movie.

  • Black & White films are ALL good

  • what an amazing actress

  • Oh man, if only this was the MIKE NELSON commentary version, this would be sweet!

  • cool

  • one of the best of the time. up there with the twilight zone and NOTLD.
