Cool idea how does the unit work is it a worm gear drive inside to gain torque i assume so very nicley machined but saw in comments $600 bit steep for a transfer box but i can understand buying materials in low volume and machine time is why great idea tho keep on inventing mate
@monkeypenllwyn1 No it does not have a worm gear. A worm gear is not as efficient as a bevel gear. It does not cost $600.00 for the drive, it is $395.00. As it is the only system of this type in existence, there is actually not a price to compare it to. It is more complicated than it appears, high quality, made in USA.
@coondogtheman1234 That would be high speed. Range is not that critical, as the point is, you just click in another fully charged battery, not having to stop and plug in like typical battery powered products. Carry spare charged batteries with you is the beauty of drill powered as opposed to motorcycle type battery with electric motor.
haha,,,, this is Coollllllllll ! Using a Drill, i gather it can go reverse too ! lol Hope it really works with a drill .....cuz i would`t wanna get Screwed ..And have it Bore a Hole in my pocket...hehe...:) Thanks 4 posting it !
honestly it a cool idea but not a 600 dollar cool idea bring the price down and many more people can afford it i mean come on there isent even a drill included
@draconis437 You may be correct. I have many drills, not just one. Many people have them laying around waiting for a hole to drill or a screw to install. Why not use them for something else in the meanwhile?
What a testiment on how far those battery hand drills have come in the last thirty years. This is a great weekend something to do toy. I don't think it is going to be the next green craze for commuting to work. But a great pit bike or just something to do when you have some friends over. I think your next step should be a model you can retrofit to most bicycles. That would make more sense. And please don't for those (ford/chevy types) forget to design it to use other brand drills.
Heli Arc is just the name for the process that Linde invented in the late 40's . It is also called TIG welding. The correct term is GTAW for gas tungsten arc welding. But no one calls it that.
heli-arc? really...come one now. when was the last time you saw someone using a shielding gas that is lighter than air? TIG for a reason, cause we use argon in this century ;)
HeliArc was the name created by Linde for their patented process of Gas Tungsten Arc Welding or GTAW. Tig was the term used over in Europe for the process after they copied it. Although Helium was used in the begining, they later used Argon and many other inert gases. GTAW it the correct name, if you want to be a stickler for details. Its like calling a ViseGrips a locking pliers.
@ZZZRSC LOL...dont you mean its like calling locking pliers Vice Grips?
I'm not being a stickler...but heli-arc is an archaic term. No one uses it , cept old farts that still use arc boxes and scratch start.
So the germans stole heli arc and renamed it another american name? lol tig = tungsten inert gas. means the same as gtaw but the arc is implied. if you werent arc welding, you wouldnt need shielding gas or tungsten now would ya. no one but aws and milspec cornballs say gtaw.
Who sings this song? I have to say this bike does look fun, and I just found out about the dewalt cordless drill powered bike. I read they might be on sale?
I have had one for over 3 years. I have 2 Dewalt Drills. Still use them all the time to drill holes and power the bike. I think the bike is easier on the drill than drilling a hole!
I have tried both the 36v and the 18v drill. Either works well. The 18v actually turns more RPM's so the bike is a little faster. The big advantae of the 36 Volt may be battery life, as the battery is physically larger and lasts longer. As far as performance, either has been great for me.
i agree makita for life!!! but not so much bout the dewalts being crap....besides being really really heavy, they work well, i've used them on construction sites when i did a/c for a lil over a year
@MrGiantstpss I have had all of 'em over the past 30 years.
Makita,DeWalt,Portercable,Ryobi, Hitachi,Skill,B&D The only ones that hold up are the Makita and the DeWalts. I still used both today. The rest are in the trash.
@MrGiantstpss Dewalts may be crap. The 3-story apartment construction site we are working on right now is huge with over 20 crews of construction workers from different companies working. The funny thing is, you see yellow tools all over the site everywhere you look. Guess all the guys that use them 8 to 10 hours a day every day are total retards in your book. Dewalt has beaten Makita in every test there is for power & more work done on a single battery.
@skjoyner Saying a Dewalt is crap is the Ford, Chevrolet thing. I have never had a problem with any of my Dewalt Drills. There may be lots of good drills, but I know a Dewalt does all I would expect. I have never had one fail or wear out after several years of usage on the Drill Powered Bike.
@chungyangrc I agree. MrGiantstpss saying Dewalt is crap is total BS. Anyone that has been around cordless tools for years knows dewalt, milwaukee, makita, and rigid are all good enough for home & the construction site. The cheap line of cordless stuff like ryobi, black & decker etc will last years also for the occasional DIY'er & construction guys who do small size jobs. I used $60 ryobi hammer drill, drilling 1000's of 1/4" holes to hang banners in my sign business. lasted 4 years
i had a bettery powered scooter and i HATED it but hey thats just me.....but i would go with gas cuz im really impatient i dont like waiting hours for something to charge and if u run out of gas u just put some more in plus u get some added power and speed
so destroy your drills? what if your drill gets wet? why couldn't they make their own drive unit that uses the same batteries? pretty cool, they just need to finish it.
No man drills are made to simply be turned on and last the entire time without overheating. I am a carpenter and I have never had a drill over heat even after hours of use ^_^
with the proper refinement, that would be one BADASS thang'. u would save a lot of money, but im curious as to how far u can go. i mean hell, a couple sued ebay batteried arent much, im thinkin 1, maybe 2 miles on a battery, but i dont use the newer drills, so who knows!
Yes I agree with you, there are battery powered bikes. A battery powered drill powering the bike is a whole different story. Move over "same old same old" here comes creative innovation.
When you came out with this, you were using an 18 volt drill. Now that Dewalt has 36v batteries, why don't you say what the speed and range is? This actually COULD be adapted to a full size electric bike. The advantage over other e-bikes would be the fact that the Dewalt 36v battery is good for over 2000 recharges and is extremely lightweight and doesn't have memory problems. Why wasted this invention on silly little warehouse bikes and "pit" bikes?
also it could have diferent mountings avalible, for small go-karts, mini quads, small boats and much more.
also like you said this could be used for much bigger e-bikes with a more powerfull drill, great thoughts and comment mate. I hope the developers see these comments and improove through sugestions!
congrats on making hack-a-day, cool product, we used to use setups like this in first, way easier thna reinventing the wheel, how much tourque can you get from the shown setup before it fails, or is there a decent buffer where the rider can go up hills and dog the bike, without melting a 2-300$ drill motor and battery, nice idea tho, ill be looking at getting one of these for testing in our first team and maybe more.

These are only a couple of situations. Thank you.

Assuming this company is in the United States...
then they have violated the Federal Copyright Law
by NOT listing the Copyright Number when stating that
their device has been patented. If it is indeed NOT
patented, they are in a heap of trouble.
A patent does not prevent anyone from building it for
themselves... only from selling it.
As far as the device is concerned, it is nothing more
than a bracket housing a worm gear.
