@breeandsparkle it's the way they do things. they make money on the simpsons mostly up until they were so out of series to put out they had to bring back Family guy since CN made it popular. so now Seth Mcfarlene's stuff is their cash cow and anything that doesn't share that or Idol's ratings get moved around to find better ones but in don't so they lose the audience entirely.
Hell if I somehow pitched an idea Fox would buy I'd only except if it came on Friday night just so I'm not surprised.

I absolutely agree. Tracie nailed the dry, snarky best friend in a way the other actress didn't. And Lee Pace...fantastic. This other Aaron was uptight like the rest of the family, but didn't have the same quirky undertone.
I also love the fact that casting chose a lead actor with such a distinct voice, Caroline Dhavernas. The same goes for Ellen Muth for Dead like Me. :D

Lol. The way this opens reminds me so much of the first ep of Dead Like Me. I know they're both by Bryan Fuller, I just find it funny how similar they are. Even the way the girl speaks is similar to George on DLM.
I agree--the box set of the series is a must have!! It is wonderful to watch the entire series in order. This was on at the same time as dead like me...both being cancelled. Love the new show though....but I would love to see this show re-tooled and brought back. I think it was before its time!!

Damn, Kerry Washington "unwatchable"? Thats a lil harsh, dont you think? She wasnt THAT bad. I read somewhere that the only reason she didnt complete her role as Mahandra was because she couldnt commit to future episodes.
I just mean that I'm so used to Tracie's version of Mahandra that Kerry's version is unwatchable because it is so different. To me she IS NOT Mahandra, not even in the slightest. Tracie gives her this casual, tough girl persona, while Kerry makes her too girly and looks much too flimsy. Plus, there didn't seem to be much chemistry between her and Caroline. Sometime, things work out for the best and in this case it was Kerry's inability to commit to future episodes, as you said.
Well thats understandable. You get used to a certain actor playing a character that its strange to see anyone else playing that part. Especially if the character is played so differently. Then again, since this was the very 1st episode, the writers may have still been reworking the character. Like with Aaron's character, i read somewhere that because of Lee's performance, they were able to take the character in a different direction than where they had originally planned.

I love this show! It's Fantastic. I'm really sad it was cancelled, i'm glad that Lee Pace took the place of the brother. Don't forget to watch this weeks episode at 8/7c this wednesday! The shows future depends on it!

This episode is the unaired pilot. They had to remake the pilot because the actors playing Aaron and Mahandra changed. So they had to redo the scenes with them. So this version is with the old actors playing them. And episode one is with the new actors.
Wonderfalls was such a sweet, oddball show. I never saw it aired, but the full season dvd set was completely worth buying. It's weird to see these other actors playing their characters because the final cast of the show was pitch perfect. I love Tracie Thoms' energy and you really believe that Mahandra and Jaye have been friends for years.
Joan of Arcadia = treacly crap. Wonderfalls, not spelled out for you, much better. BTW, they were both conceived around the same time, so Wonderfalls borrowed nothing from Joan.
Wow, is it ever fun to see unaired pilots! I hadn't realized how much the score and music adds to the humor of the show. And, really, THANK GOD they found Tracie Thoms. Kerry Washington could not come off more stiff and uncomfortable than she does in her scene. What a world of difference from Tracie's Majandra! For those who have never seen Wonderfalls, please be sure to go watch the aired pilot. It really is amazing how small changes make the show so so much better. :)

Wonderfalls is on DVD. I bought it a few years ago. And I don't know what Now and Again is. Do you mean Once and Again? I believe that is on DVD as well.
No, I remember Once and Again. It actually came out the same year as Now and Again, but lasted longer. I have since bought Wonderfalls and watch it all the time. Now and Again was about a man who was hit by a train and they put his brain inside of a superhuman gorgeous man.
It should be noted that the only reason the dvds came out was the thousands of loyal fans who petitioned FOX for it. The dvds are Widescreen with a killer 5.1 surround mix. Thirteen films, if you will. There's commentary on certain episodes, including my favorite, "Lovesick Ass", plus the music video of Andy Partridge's (XTC) theme song and a documentary on the making of the series. I'm just damned grateful I signed that petition. A must-have dvd set.
I too was annoyed when Fox canceled this show, but some of the rage and anger that people direct towards networks and network executives should be directed at the American public. No network, which is a business after all, is going to keep a show on the air if it's not making money. It's people who choose to watch stuff like "According to Jim" and not watch "Pushing Daisies" who are the main problem.
oh man its sooo strange to watch these actors play mahondra and jay's bro! im so glad lee and tracie replaced them. especially tracie, that other girl looks like shes just repeatig memorized lines... not very expressive facially, but it may be b/c i saw the reg pilot a million times so its so awkward for me to watch this! also the sound.. wow i like the ones in the original pilot/dvd soooo much better... so much..
The original pilot also excludes the scene where Jaye Smith almost chokes to death on her sandwich. They mentioned this in the commentary how the studio wanted some background on that day.
yeah i've noticed a few other differences, like prominence of the purse during the customer asking for a discount. this one, wasn't so obvious, but they put some shots in on the second one that really showed the purse to give context.
also, i think the soundtrack was very different. sounds are really different (for the better!)
One of the best shows ever on TV. Easily in my top 5. And Jaye is one of my all-time favorite characters. Lee Pace and Tracie Thoms were nice changes for the actual series cast. I've watched Pushing Daisies, and you can see Wonderfalls elements. Wonderfalls was a better show, though. Tragic quick cancellation. Thanks, Fox.

and much as i like pushing daisies, it's just not as good as wonderfalls. it just isn't.
One bites the dust, then the other & perhaps 'Pushing Daises'. Fuller's first dramedy 'Dead Like Me' (the one that bit the dust first)is much better. Wonderfalls is a good show compared to a lot of what stays on the air. I hope 'Daises' works out better and look forward to the 'Dead Like Me' movie!

While I agree that Fox sucks (haven't even watched it since they cancelled Arrested Development... nothing worth watching on that damn channel unless you like watching old reruns of shows), they never had Freaks and Geeks on their network. That was NBC, so you should direct your anger towards them. I think you thought that Fox cancelled it because Fox Family used to show reruns of it after it was cancelled.

The DVD of the series is worth getting.
I saw the pilot when it aired, only once.
Each episode most likely only aired once, of the ones that were aired.
It was a strange FOX 2004 schedule where the shows where shown on different days.

The Mouth Breather( Neil Grayston )is currently staring in the fantastic show - "Eureka".
It's amazing to see how adding Lee Pace and Tracie Thomas to the cast during the retool made it a perfectly cast show.

Wonderfalls was such a sweet, oddball show. I never saw it aired, but the full season dvd set was completely worth buying. It's weird to see these other actors playing their characters because the final cast of the show was pitch perfect. I love Tracie Thoms' energy and you really believe that Mahandra and Jaye have been friends for years.

Joan of Arcadia = treacly crap. Wonderfalls, not spelled out for you, much better. BTW, they were both conceived around the same time, so Wonderfalls borrowed nothing from Joan.

Wow, is it ever fun to see unaired pilots! I hadn't realized how much the score and music adds to the humor of the show. And, really, THANK GOD they found Tracie Thoms. Kerry Washington could not come off more stiff and uncomfortable than she does in her scene. What a world of difference from Tracie's Majandra! For those who have never seen Wonderfalls, please be sure to go watch the aired pilot. It really is amazing how small changes make the show so so much better. :)

i heard about this while i was looking up info about Lee Pace. This show is good and i'm glad you posted it. It reminds me of Joan of Arcadia but much better. It doesnt come off as so preachy, so it rocks with its off-humor. Thanks. :)

I agree. Tracie Thoms and Lee Pace are WAY better than the people they originally chose.

That part where the lion statue sings all night to keep her awake is just like the movie Ghost. They either stole that idea or are paying homage to it...either way that sucks.

Wonderfalls is on DVD. I bought it a few years ago. And I don't know what Now and Again is. Do you mean Once and Again? I believe that is on DVD as well.

No, I remember Once and Again. It actually came out the same year as Now and Again, but lasted longer. I have since bought Wonderfalls and watch it all the time. Now and Again was about a man who was hit by a train and they put his brain inside of a superhuman gorgeous man.

It should be noted that the only reason the dvds came out was the thousands of loyal fans who petitioned FOX for it. The dvds are Widescreen with a killer 5.1 surround mix. Thirteen films, if you will. There's commentary on certain episodes, including my favorite, "Lovesick Ass", plus the music video of Andy Partridge's (XTC) theme song and a documentary on the making of the series. I'm just damned grateful I signed that petition. A must-have dvd set.

I too was annoyed when Fox canceled this show, but some of the rage and anger that people direct towards networks and network executives should be directed at the American public. No network, which is a business after all, is going to keep a show on the air if it's not making money. It's people who choose to watch stuff like "According to Jim" and not watch "Pushing Daisies" who are the main problem.

oh man its sooo strange to watch these actors play mahondra and jay's bro! im so glad lee and tracie replaced them. especially tracie, that other girl looks like shes just repeatig memorized lines... not very expressive facially, but it may be b/c i saw the reg pilot a million times so its so awkward for me to watch this! also the sound.. wow i like the ones in the original pilot/dvd soooo much better... so much..

The original pilot also excludes the scene where Jaye Smith almost chokes to death on her sandwich. They mentioned this in the commentary how the studio wanted some background on that day.

yeah i've noticed a few other differences, like prominence of the purse during the customer asking for a discount. this one, wasn't so obvious, but they put some shots in on the second one that really showed the purse to give context.
also, i think the soundtrack was very different. sounds are really different (for the better!)

One of the best shows ever on TV. Easily in my top 5. And Jaye is one of my all-time favorite characters. Lee Pace and Tracie Thoms were nice changes for the actual series cast. I've watched Pushing Daisies, and you can see Wonderfalls elements. Wonderfalls was a better show, though. Tragic quick cancellation. Thanks, Fox.

yeah totally. lee pace and tracie thoms were integral changes. the whole series would have been seriously different different without them; both those actors brought such good quirks in delivery.
and much as i like pushing daisies, it's just not as good as wonderfalls. it just isn't.

One bites the dust, then the other & perhaps 'Pushing Daises'. Fuller's first dramedy 'Dead Like Me' (the one that bit the dust first)is much better. Wonderfalls is a good show compared to a lot of what stays on the air. I hope 'Daises' works out better and look forward to the 'Dead Like Me' movie!

this show was amazing. everyone at fox is a fucking idiot. they canceled all of there good shows. this one, Arrested Development, Freaks and Geeks. theyre complete morons. their whole network sucks and they have no good shows.

While I agree that Fox sucks (haven't even watched it since they cancelled Arrested Development... nothing worth watching on that damn channel unless you like watching old reruns of shows), they never had Freaks and Geeks on their network. That was NBC, so you should direct your anger towards them. I think you thought that Fox cancelled it because Fox Family used to show reruns of it after it was cancelled.
