That girl wasn't given a podium so that she could have an audience to spout her religious beliefs to. She was nominated valedictorian so that she could represent her class and speak to everyone in her class, teachers and parents included. But she didn't. What she did was selfish and insensitive, and if I were her principal and she had carried on like that at my PUBLIC school ceremony, I would have cut her mic off too.
It isn't the same if a student talks about god as it is if the school talks about god. The school is an establishment - an arm or agency... whatever you want to call it... of the government. This makes them subject to the 1st amendment. The 1st amendment says nothing about restraining private individual citizens from talking about religion in public places.
If the principle gave a speech, then yeah thats the state imposing doctrine on the audience. This student, who is not a representative of the state, should not have had her mic cut.
The lady clearly won that. Sep. of church & state...it specifically states that public schools cannot incorporate any "religious doctrines" into their system...all the while keeping freedom of speech--students too must abide by this constitutional statement, and when speaking in front of general audiences they do NOT have the right to impose christian values beyond personal beliefs.
This is inaccurate. No individual is beholden to not express an opinion or belief, no matter what the forum. Some girl's mere mention of God and other tenants of Christian doctrine in no way constitute the sanction of a state-sponsored institution. This is not about the separation of church and state, but the restriction of religion by cowardly administrators.
I bet Tucker would've been on the other side had this been a Muslim girl talking about Muhammad.

Lol, Tucker, I'm beginning to actually like this guy. I'm increasingly seeing his views as more entertaining and less infuriating.

the religious part of her speech was totally inappropriate. Just as yelling 'fire!' in a crowded hall.

Did Tucker just call Christian religion and a belief in a Democratic hopeful the same? What a douche.

Yeah, and we always talk about the extremists being from Islam. :-( People on the right think that a one party system is what we need.
