As we went through Henderson there were broken windows in houses and cars everywhere. We drove past the hospital and there were people everywhere outside the hospital who were bleeding and injured. As we drove closer we observed many vehicles along the road that had all the glass broken out of them.

@Skandalos ... My business was 3 miles from the Pacific Engineering plant where the 4000 tons of ammonium percolate exploded. I heard it first hand as all my windows blew in. I also saw the video taken from Black mountain before it was edited. The sound is real. If you don't know the facts it's to just best to be still.. Also my wife worked at St Rose De Lima hospital where the injured were taken.. The dept. of defense calculated this explosion equal to a one kiloton nuclear air burst.
@BIGMUDDYDOG You are correct that the sound is real. What Skandalos was mentioning is that on the video the sound can not be real as sound does not travel as fast as light. When watching this video the visual explosion and sound come at the same time. That is edited. The actual sound comes after the visual explosion. If you look at the video you can see the sound travel along the ground. That visual evidence if scientific evidence is not enough to understand this fact.

@donwest420 That was edited or dubbed - the video footage from Black Mountain was being shot five miles away. Since sound travels so much slower than light, we'll see the image before we hear it. A good indicator is the visible shock wave spreading from the blast - that is, essentially, a "sound front" as well - when that wave breaks over the location you're in, you hear the sound. Think of it as the old rule about counting after you see lightning until you hear thunder.

There were no English subtitles on this video to begin with. These are Hebrew subtitles, and that's the way it was dubbed from an Israely TV broadcast. In Israel, all foreign broadcasts appear with Hebrew subtitles, to aid the deaf and avoid whenever possible, voice-over, as it's done in most non-Englisg speaking countries

@Alientank Big explosions do not work quite the same way small explosions do. Watch some nuclear test videos; it's not primarily the overpressure of the shockwave that causes damage, it's the dynamic pressure(i.e. "blast wind") that bends trees over, blows houses down and picks up and tosses debris(and people, if they forget to duck and cover).
Many people don't remember a book called, "HENDERSON BOOM TOWN". It was book of cartoons depicting what happened that day. I did the cartoons, printed and published the book, only 200 copies. They sold out in two weeks with very little advertising. A few officials at city hall were upset with me for printing the book so I decided not to do a second run. When watching this video the visual explosion and sound come at the same time. That is edited. The actual sound comes after the visual explosion. If you look at the video you can see the sound travel along the ground. That visual evidence if scientific evidence is not enough to understand this fact.

@donwest420 That was edited or dubbed - the video footage from Black Mountain was being shot five miles away. Since sound travels so much slower than light, we'll see the image before we hear it. A good indicator is the visible shock wave spreading from the blast - that is, essentially, a "sound front" as well - when that wave breaks over the location you're in, you hear the sound. Think of it as the old rule about counting after you see lightning until you hear thunder.

@pervysageisbusy00 Instead of flaming you im going to inform you. To "trace" a phone call takes time, its not as easy for smaller E.O.C.s to do it as it is for larger better equipped ones. If you dial 911, take a deep breath, and be prepared to answer a few questions about your emergency. If people were went blindly into this disaster the death toll would have been far more. If you dial 911 you have an obligation to talk to an operator and answer questions.

@Alientank Big explosions do not work quite the same way small explosions do. Watch some nuclear test videos; it's not primarily the overpressure of the shockwave that causes damage, it's the dynamic pressure(i.e. "blast wind") that bends trees over, blows houses down and picks up and tosses debris(and people, if they forget to duck and cover).

Many people don't remember a book called, "HENDERSON BOOM TOWN". It was book of cartoons depicting what happened that day. I did the cartoons, printed and published the book, only 200 copies. They sold out in two weeks with very little advertising. A few officials at city hall were upset with me for printing the book so I decided not to do a second run. There's more to the story, but we won't go into that now. I just thought someone might be interested in seeing those cartoons from 1988.

This all happened because of the space shuttle Challenger. When it exploded NASA stopped the program for a while. PEPCON made the fuel for the Solid Rocket Boosters and kept making the fuel. Since the program was stopped PEPCON had nowhere to put the fuel but in plastic barrels inside the factory. Because of large windstorms that day some of the metal framing on the ceiling and wall so they got a welding torch and started putting it back together. Two employees stayed behind. One was in a whee
