@dannman4209 Anyone who knows their fencing, I suppose. You're not an idiot for being ignorant, you're an idiot for acting like you know something you don't.
Skill vs Speed? Skill always wins. Having fenced with people from both Western and Eastern traditions, this I know as a fact and it is supported by all popular writing. In fact, being slower is actually is a significant test of skill. Exercising precision and control, keeping proper distance, timing, and rhythm, responding appropriately to an attack, and even more, recognizing an attack, are far more difficult at a reduced speed.
@bigpeteswackshack As you say. Thank you very much for this valuable input. Since it is in contradiction to the historical sources we reconstruct, I might feel inclined not to be bothered too much. Thanks for the comment anyway.
@DierkHagedorn im not trying to be an asshole. I just come from a different more disciplined background where the emphasis is on speed accuracy and form where zen boli is a crucial aspect of combat as well as strait forward complexion which isnt complex at all. historical sources dont pit different variable style against each other cause it has never happened. only those those native to the regions specified so the only contradiction is assuming outside input from a third party is contradicting.
@DierkHagedorn He's right. The way you fight, grabbing blades, fight so close each other, and hold the blade so far from your own body as if you were holding a mad cat make no sense. It is not a practical approach.
Sure, if you like to do this way, go on. But still very far from a real fight.
@bigpeteswackshack yes, because master at arms from those time, who actually waged war and were trained and seasoned warriors, were going to use and made a manuscript of an impractical technique, right? it is valid technique to disarm your opponent, you should check historical sources. if it was imposible to disarm someone, you think they would do it? you think masters would teach that technique if it was useless? i have seen a lot more of impractical techniques in eastern martial arts.
@bigpeteswackshack actually you can. Fiore Dei Liberi demonstrated it in his manuscript. He fought at least five lethal duels, fought in war, was the weapon master for a prominent italian noble and trained men for judicial duels to the death. What is your evidence to the contrary?
@temmy9 I can double this, since I've trained according to Fiore's manuscript under the guidance of Guy Windsor who has done it for years and knows his stuff. I might add, he's said to win these duels without a single scratch on himself.
@Respecthebrotherhood At Hammaborg, we use modern equipment such as fencing master masks and vests, lacrosse gloves, hockey girdley. Also a neck protection and other stuff if required. Our guest from Chicago has a somewhat different gear, a padded gambeson, leather protoction and a custom made helmet.
oh! finally someone applied that dangerous and sinister technique "schuhe und schwertwechseln". very brave of you :) also i just adore your music choice. totally unexpected for that kind of video. thumbs up!
@phaederkiel Theresa uses an Albion Liechtenauer, Falko and me have swords manufactured by Pavel Moc, and Marcus' sword is a special custom made item. All of them weigh 1550 - 1650 grammes which is in line with historical originals. In fact, they are not *very* flexible, only a little. They are, for safety reasons, slightly flexible, but even in this way they do not differ much (if at all) from historical swords.
They're going plenty fast for using steel longswords. There was good technique in places - but generally the ability to set up decisive actions seems to have been hampered by a lack of respect for measure.
Technique or measure may not have always been great, but if memory serves, we had no double kills in the fights so I would say that the blows were at least decisive.
Lacks speed and intent. It's not slow, but I've seen much "faster" bouts. Unfortunately we can't say anything about effectivenes of both styles from this video.
No, we really can't. Not from a single video with random fencers.
By the way: Finally I understand how the Star Wars actors must have felt when George Lucas told them to act "faster" and "more intense". Finally I get it.
Don't get me wrong. I think those bouts were a good demonstration of impressive skills of every swordsman. But I've seen hammaborgers performing various moves and strikes much faster and with more intent to hit their 'adversary'.
I know it's a single video with random fencers. I just interpreted word "bout" in a wrong way and thought that it's supposed to be something more "fullspeed". So my previous comments were just a result of a misunderstanding and that's why I apologize for them.
Do you realize that these two individuals may never have had a bout before Theresa's visit? When you are not sparring with your regular study group, stepping it down a notch is ESSENTIAL for everyone's safety. This is especially valid in this case since they are using steel blunts without wearing harness. I do understand your drive for authenticity, and agree when possible; however, common sense demands safety be the first priority.
i simply loved this O.O

I was wondering, which sources do you follow? This looks like something German, but not quite to my eye. Thank you!

@DiabolusIgnis You are not entirely mistaken: Theresa follows the Italian line à la Fiore, whereas the Hammaborgers are on the German track.

right. cause you would really be able to grab your opponents sword in battle. theyre techniques are loose and impracticable and foundations are weak.

But let me ask: what swords do you use? They seem to be very flexible and lightweight, perhaps even a little much so...?
