Part III wasn't very good—it seemed like someone trying to copy a Godfather film rather than a Godfather film in its own right. That said, it was above average and this scene certainly stands out. Integrating the love theme from the first film (Speak Softly Love) into the actual movie was a good move. Taken as one continuous film, Part III gives us a satisfying end to Michael's story. You can't earn money and power through evil means and then expect to simply wash your hands of it in the end.

Mickey and Apollonia love story makes me crying each time I see this movie!

I have never been to Sicily, but I think it is quite similar to Calabria where I usually spend my summer holidays. The beauty of the landscape, not only the beaches but also burned ground too, brings me back to my roots, to semplicity of people and relationships.. so different from north Italy, where I live.. and this is the message I think that american people have from Sicily in this movie..

am I the only one that thinks this song did Michael more harm than good? In my opinion his son, unknowingly and unintentionally of course, by singing this only reminded him about Apollonia and the way he lost her

@MantschAdrian it had that effect, though no one other than Don Tommassino and Michael actually knew about the marriage. Even Peter Clemenza, who picked Mike up from Siciliy knew nothing about it. It makes the sadness even worse, since only Michael has that feeling of loss (which is part of the song's meaning). He truly loved Apollonia, without the American complications of Kay or his family.

@SantomPh: To me, Micheal only saw Kay as a way of "Americanizing" himself. I do not think they truly loved each other and they would have divorced even if they lived a normal life. You could tell Micheal was just awestruck at the sight of Apollonia and that it was love at first sight. I think Apollonia would have complimented Micheal well. She is playful and spunky with him but I have the feeling that she would trust him, far more than what Kay had shown. And she wouldn't abort any of her kids.

@mrbignerd I agree that after losing Apollonia Micheal became distant from almost everyone, even his immediate family and Kay. Before killing Solozzo Mike didn't really want to be in the family (and Vito forbade it) business anyway- he did love Kay as an American, but he arguably came home from Sicily as a Sicilian not given to American fancies and preferences. That said, the final scene in the book with Mike is him and Kay in bed, presumably after sex. And Mario Puzo would never let her abort.

@DonCiCsten old man in the wheelchair is don tommasino? one of the very few who didn't betray michael. he guarded him during his exile in sicily, when he married appolonia. he was crippled when vito cut don ciccio open in GF2 and he was shot while escaping.

This may be a naive statement, but this is a very distinct type of Italian, it sounds so so different than to the typical Italian I'm learning, no wonder some Sicilians say that Sicily is not Italy, and should be independent... however, it is beautiful!!

We are a "recent" country, this year is our 150th from foundation, but historically we have hundreds of different cultures, dialects, rituals and mentality.

Italians as they are known and shown at cinema are almost always similar to the Sicilians.

Northern Italy people often has features that you can compare with continental somatic traits.

Anyway.. Italy is a beautiful country, even if you come from Tuscany, Sicily, Piedmont, Sardinia etc etc :-)
