NCCN posits that you can have your nuke plants blow sky high, spent fuel rods all over the beach, contaminated food 100 miles away, epic fail, radioactive elements detected (always "low level", natch, as if ANY is good) all over the northern hemisphere, and still pretend to have containment. Most people are stupid, sad to say. Obvious containment breach in a huge way.

the uranium used in nuclear reactors is not pure enough to generate a nuclear explosion. nuclear reactors run on slightly enriched uranium, 5-15% pure. nuclear weapons use 90-95% pure uranium.

the danger in japan is that the reactor cores may melt through their containment vessels and then burn in free air, releasing radioactive smoke and dust into the atmosphere.

@HyperIndividualist nuclear explosions don't just happen, intiating an atomic chain reaction is a very delicate proscess. trying to start a nuclear explosion with fire or heat is like trying to start your car with a sledgehammer. besides, like i said, nuclear fuel in a reactor is far to impure to reach the criticality required to cause a nuclear explosion.

@HyperIndividualist prompt criticality is not the same thing as a nuclear explosion where a supercritical core is held together by an explosive charge to generate massive amounts of fission. it is literally impossible for a reactor to generate a nuclear explosion, unless maybe the fuel rods were coated in high explosive and detonated it at the precise moment of criticality. even then, the impurities of reactor grade nuclear fuel would impede the fission process, resulting in a very low yield.

The situation is realy bad but if they would use the Chernobyl methood they would have a complete meltdown in 1, 2 and 3 and they would loose absolutely all controle of everything and the situations would become much, much worse. @HyperIndividualist You have to understand that if there would be full meltdown the radiation would not stop or decrease, it would increase. What they are doing right now is trying to cool this stuff down, then they have to put up new cooling system or fix the old one, they radiation hopefully would decrease then, then they have to monitor the site for few years while it´s cooling down and then cleanup can begin. Have in mind that in Chernobyl the core is still active and is still radioactive.

Chernobyl was melting while they buried it. Let it melt from here unto eternity, but just bury it already. The core will always be radioactive at Chernobyl, but the corium is no longer molten - it has solidified. Let the radiation increase in Japan's water table. Just stop the particles from blowing my way

@HyperIndividualist you are probably right about the wet spaghetti, but they have alreddy connected some "spaghetti". In Chernobyl the reactor had exploded when the rescue efford began. In Fukushima we still have all the reactors intackt (could have some damage though) and system to cool down the exceed steam in the basement of reactor nr. 2 is damaged. The local radio station in Los Angeles just reported radiation levels TEN MILLION times above normal. They've just detected radiation NORTH OF BEIJING, CHINA. Let's stop pretending and bury this.
