After three hours of heroic fight against numercally superior forces, unable to manouver, destroyed her guns, flooded her stores and many men of her crew injured or dead, this ship prefered sink by herself and no surrender, and with her flag in the topmast dissapeared under the waves with the shout of ¡DEÜTSCHLAND ÜBER ALLES!
Rest in peace in the 48º10´N 12º16´W ¡and still present her bow to the enemy!
@AV8BHARRIERPLUS Why sink your own ship? That's an act of cowardice, or stupidity. She was battered to a burning hulk and would have sunk anyway; especially after being torpedoed. You mean men went to the trouble of scuttling her, as she was actually sinking? That makes no sense. Like the Tirpitz and the Sharnhorst; if you pick a fight with "numerically superior forces” or simply “superior forces” you will usually lose and the Bismarck did. Q.E.D.
Gawd, but there's a lot of know-nothing braggards writing in here! If you don't know, keep quiet. Too many here spouting off about what they don't know. IF they're even on subject!
Laffey was also much, MUCH smaller and much faster than the Bismarck. Destroyers also mount much more effective anti-air batteries than capitol ships do. Jers, stop changing the subject and ship types when you start to lose an arguement, it looks pitiful.
Ok, but you have to take into account the fact that she was part of a naval task force at Santa Cruz. Unlike the Bismarck she had support in the downing of those Japanese aircraft. And to get kill credit you merely have to be the last one to hit the plane, god knows how many planes she simply finished off. It is much easier to defend one's self when in a group as opposed to alone and against staggeringly vast opposition.
She did I dont know what book you read. The Bismarck took several torpedo hits, countless shellfire hits, she fought against The Rodney during her last engagement, another battleship. and yes, but the South Dakota was also not ALONE, she was part of a massive naval fleet throwing tons upon tons of steel into the air, makes racking of kills much much easier. In the end what sank her was scuttling charges, not even the combined destructive force of the Royal navy managed it the Germans sunk her
The Bismark fought for three hours alone against a vastly numerically superior force so obviously she wasn't as "obsolete" as you would like to believe she was. Even as she was sinking she dealt enough damage to force three British cruisers out of the fight, forcing them to limp back to Scapa Flow for repairs. Learn your naval history before you try to look intelligent and insult others.
The Bismarck did not hit any other ship in the last fight some may have been damage by shrapnel thats it. I suggest you buy some new naval history book
The current ignorance is made worse by the fact that man will never see Naval warfare of this caliber ever again, ever. Her impressive record stands testament to German craftsmanship and the capability of her Kreigsmarine crewmen. History has proven that it was indeed scuttling charges placed by the crew that was her deathblow, not British gunfire. The German navy refused to allow the Bismark to be captured.
Please grow up the british sank the bismarck in fact all 4 turrets were destroyed in 15 minutes and it could not stop 6 obsolete biplanes. Nothing remarkable about WW1 design with obsolete single purpose secondary guns the weakest broadside of any modern BB and terrible AA protection and obsolete 3 engine/3 screws
Certainly explaining why she easily KO'ed the pride of the British fleet. She was also sunk with very little room to maneuver to avoid incoming torpedoes. In addition, her crews had been trained to track modern military aircraft and were unprepared for the slow Swordfish, had the British attacked with say, Avengers the story may very well have ended differently. Also, you may not yet know how hard it is to shoot down planes, especially when comparatively alone.
If the British had attacked with avengers they would have sunk the Bismarck. The BB South Dakota at battle of Santa Cruz shot down 26 modern jap naval aircraft, But then South Dakota had modern AA guns and best secondary guns of WW2 the 5/38
so what if these people were the enemy in world war II....the Bismarck tho was a tough and powerfull ship...she wouldnt go down with out a fight...and i do belive she was scuttled...she was practicly a floating fortress when you think about it... may they rest in peace in the sea they loved so dearly...
yeah thats ture germany was allone aggenct the world but the bismarck was a big ship and sunk full ships i think that was a very great ship and is a legende
Thats true. When the Bismarck ingaged the Hood on the 24th of May, 1941, it only took 8 minutes and 36 seconds to sink the Hood. On the 27th of May, 1941, it took the King George V, Rodney and Dorsetshire over 8 hours to sink the Bismarck. There was contreversy though that the crew of the Bismarck set scuttle charges (which was proved when James Cameron launched his expedition to the Bismarck Wreck) or that is was the three torpedoes luanched by Dorestshire the sank the Bismarck.
either way it doesn't matter, i would have thought the germans wouldn't had wanted the crown jewel of nazi germany falling into allies hands, so it makes sense they would lay scuttle charges, the british wanted to sink her and i'm sure if the scuttling chagres had not worked the british gunfire would have finished the job.
That's why Hood sank quickly. When Bismarck was attacked by KG V, Rodney both the british ships were firing point blank range and couldnt get plunging fire on to the deck of Bismarck and her side armor was so effective that 16" and 14" shell weren't even making impressions on the side armor.
I too believe that Bismarck was scuttled by her crew
One 14" shell certainly did, punctured a fuel bunker, which is why she had to make for Brest. Prinz Eugen was able to continue on the original mission and was successful.
Bismarck, Tirpitz, Scharnhorst, Gneisenau were all amazing ships. But what can you do. Build 1 battle ship while the USA build 3 battleships and 3 aircraft carriers in the same time.
Now be nice! Just because the South Dakota roamed the North Atlantic calling "here kitty, kitty" to the Tirpitz, doesn't automatically mean she'd have won the fight. Of course though, Tirpitz was considered a "hard luck" ship.

I think Hood sank very quickly because of a well place Plunging fire from one of bismarck's 15" guns and that shell ignited a magazine! That
