Final comment - the concern about lag is entirely justified. The best idea I've seen for overcoming this barrier while leaving everyone capable of potentially coming in contact with each other has been to use fog of war/sensor dampening in battle/sensor games of some sort to determine who can see who in the larger battles.

Biggest thing about Eve I liked was how you were in one universe with everyone, really easy to have huge corporations with people from all over the world, end up in teamspeak or ventrilo with people in Russia, Europe, etc, depending on time of day, from your corp/alliance. Crappy part was the big battles usually ended in a node crash and worse than severe lag. Can't wait for a twitch/FPS game the same and a good resolution to that problem.

I'll give this game a try. I'm not playing Eve Online anymore...if I'm to play this game and stay at it after more than a month or so, I'll need the first person action to be a lot more than Eve, which shouldn't be hard to accomplish at all - you just need decent collision handling and be able to handle twitch - something that really threw Star Wars Galaxies for a loop when they tried to make the switch, but if you actually designed it that way from the ground up, maybe it'll work for you.

There are Threadnaughts on fire of the shoulder of Orion (!), player riots including tradehubs blockades by overloading nodes including Jita and Amarr. Ingame Monocles to be bought for $70 and devblogs about $1000 jeans trying to justify them. Keep out for some time

I watched the trailers and thought it was a space combat MMO. And, it was nothing like I expected. It felt more like an Economy simulator then anything. But, in that sense. Its a damn good one. From what I could tell, The entire universe was controlled by massive guilds. I bumped into a massive fight and just spectated (I stayed far enough and found other spectators). Its quite cool how alive the game feels. But, its just not my type

@MrFlunkorg frankly, it is what you want it to be, for sure it isn't a single thing, but it's certainly more close to a strategy game than to anything else, (as strategy includes resources management/industry/economy). Those big russian alliances that own half of the 0.0 space didn't really get there by undercutting prices of afterburners, if you know what I mean ;P. Some people are professional thieves, some are spies, some mercs. Nothing limits you in a sandbox. And there isn't many sand-mmos.

If you want togo back in history, the first truly massive online space RPG was "Jumpgate the Reconstruction Initiative". It was here before Eve.

It's only in closed beta and already better than eve. Eve wasn't hard... double click...orbit...f1? hmmm sounds...hard.

Now using a joystick together with throttle control when you are doing REAL evasive manuevers while you dodge missiles and plasma shots going around asteroids and barrel roll while trying to shoot the other player or npc! now THAT is hard and takes skill. you fly your ship! Not just look at it in eve.

@TheJedimaster6788 The big problem will be lag. Laggy gameplay is not tolerable in space sims. In EVE this is somehow overlooked due to the game mechanics, but in an action oriented space sim... lag can make or break the game.

I really wish I am wrong, but I doubt they can overcome this barrier.

If there is any lag at all it will be due to poor quality graphics cards on end user systems.

Unless the netcode here will revolutionize gaming (which I doubt), it will be laggy. or it will severely limit in some way the amount of players that are together in the same area (instance based maybe?)

In eve you have battles involving thousands players, territory wars, black-op's, logistics, thieving, corporate espionage, and all other things, because you don't need to manually fly your ship. So you can concentrate on things beyond that. It's a different game, don't compare it because it's in space too. If you want to compare it, try it with BSG Online.

Everyone who states he knows Freelancer knows that you realy can't copy it. Since the idea of Freelancer is as old as Science Fiction itself.
