Alright, Nate, Stephen Hawking couldn't answer my question* but maybe you could. Why do physicists assume time exists neither inside a black hole nor prior (if the term can be used) to the big bang. Sure it's easy to demonstrate a theoretical clock theoretically stopping as it theoretically crosses a theoretical event horizon, but that does nothing to explain why it stops.
