  • Happy Day Fail!

  • This looks like a PC flight simulator.., besides no one would be that close to the runway...

  • I'm sorry, this video was so comical. I can't stop laughing.

I'm sure lots of people died tho.

  • Don't control locks have big flouresent flags on them? If not they appear to need them. Also, this has to be the first thing on the preflight checklist. Bottom line is they didn't do there checklist!

  • that looks fake

  • PNF: Flight controls

    PF: Free and correct

  • I've seen better landings ...

  • thats for not paying attention

  • Studied this video in ground school on the topic of CRM.

This is a turbine variant of the Caribou, the crash was caused because the control lock was left in place and was unable to be unlocked once they realised it.

It appeared that both pilots assumed the other had removed the control lock :/

  • @user1000101 Please explain what a control lock is.

  • @GregDrayGregDray A control lock is a device used on the ground only, in an aircraft to stop any of the control surfaces from moving.

In smaller aircraft such as a Cessna 172 it is a pin that is placed through the control column to stop the ailerons and elevators from moving.

This is done to prevent them from bashing around in the wind and causing damage to the airframe or control linkages.

  • Guy sounds like peter Griffon.

  • @DaveSpectacular

    Not really.

  • Fail........

  • lol ill bet those 'pilots' were 5 year old boys shitting on the controls

  • Holy shit

  • Did anybody get hurt... ?

  • @skazhiprivet not rlly pnly the guy that died

  • thats just plain stupid flying!

  • @TheLoader69 I C Whut you did thur

  • I think so, because the plane has crashed with the cockpit on the ground

  • Did the pilot(s) Die? :S

  • @5233959 even immortal would die there..

  • The lock that was left in was a cable lock which is attached to a cable to retain tension on a cable while one or both ends are disconnected. In this case several people would have been at fault. The mechanic whose responsibility it was to remove the lock, the mechanic responsible for the flight control rig check required due to the disconnecting of that cable, and then finally the flight crew who should have caught the reduced control column movement.

  • He took off with the elevator lock on... He should have aborted.

  • its really not fake....

  • what kind of plane is that?

  • It's a de Havilland of Canada DHC-5 Buffalo.

  • Actually it's a DHC-4 Caribou. Buffalos have T-tails.

  • Yes, You are right.

  • holy crap fuck

  • thats a bad pilot

  • Holy crap, how strange. I came across this video on August 27, 2009. Wierd.

  • Damn what a shitty way to die.

  • What's a "tool" ....?

  • ahahahhaahhahahahahaha still u cont belive it lmto

  • The aircraft took off for a test flight for a turbine-engine conversion programme. It climbed steeply, rolled to the right and crashed in a nose-down, rightwing-low attitude.

  • We don't need a commentry, thanks. =)

  • The shitbird pilot failed to remove the control lock... painted red, and looking him in the eye the entire time. You can't advance the throttles with the control lock in place, but this plane was being modified. How you can do this if you did a pre-flight checklist is beyond me. Obviously, no one ran the checks, even though there were two pilots. The third person to die was an engineer, who was the only innocent party to die.

  • this is exactly what happened

  • Just search for registration N400NC and you can read the true story.

  • Watch. Think. Watch again.... there is a good 1/2 sec delay between the first impact and the sound. The crash is not a mile away, maybe 300...400ft.

Again, search for N400NC and read the story.

  • Also, the climb out speed of the plane is about 90, and its in a lateral turn for almost 6 seconds before impact. That would put it (if this was a real crash) about 800 feet off the runway, or about 900 feet from the camera. The time delay between the crash and when the sound reaches the camera would be just under 1 second, and easy to discern, even for a child.

  • well calculated.... I'm just not sure if you're looking at the same video as I do. I can see/hear a time delay of almost 1 sec.

And I have another problem with the fake theory. Why should someone fake an accident that really happened?

  • maybe they are a history buff.....

  • You do talk out of your asshole don't you =)

  • I would like to know what you fly so I am never on your plane in the future.

  • With all due respect, you sir, are a moron!

  • I'm always astonished at the number of morons who don't actually know about the incident they're watching on Youtube and either announce "It's FAKE" or tell everyone they're a pilot then give their "expert opinion" which is completely at odds with the real facts. Why are these people too stupid to just do 30 secs of research then making an informed comment? There's much to be learned from videos like these. It's just a shame that so many armchair experts feel the need to make throwaway comments.

  • rip

  • How is this fake? He skipped because he was shocked. The smoke wasn't '2 seconds after.'

  • uuum... what produced this accident? bad rudder config?

  • how it comes so fast black?

  • In its synopsis of the accident, the Transportation Safety Board concluded that the control

gust lock system had not been fully disengaged prior to flight and that one or more of the

locking pins had become re-engaged after lift-off.

  • So what you are saying is that the controls of the plane got locked right after takeoff, thus resulting in the hopeless attempt for a "loop"?

  • Yes, this is what the accident investigation found most likely and my experience as a pilot agrees this most probable.

  • Damn dude, that sucks! horrible situation!

  • I read that the cargo had not been properly secured, and had slid to the back of the plane on lift-off... ahhh, the internet... so full of wonderful facts..

  • The accident occurred on August 27, 1992 on the first of several planned trips to flightcheck the fuel and hydraulic systems. The aircraft had been hangared in a partially disassembled state over the winter, and had only recently been re-assembled, including the re-installation of the complete tail section.

  • the need for the replacement of the aircraft's mechanical

vacuum pumps with a Bendix suction system, the addition of in-line fuel boost pumps

and the installation of a newly designed hydraulic pump.

  • Detailed information about this accident:

The accident occurred in August 1992 at the Gimli Industrial Park in Manitoba. The accident aircraft is a highly modified de Havilland aircraft. In this case a Caribou had

been converted to turbine power and was operated under the EXPERIMENTAL category

of CAR 4b. The conversion was accomplished at Gimli, and the aircraft first flew in mid-November 1991, before accumulating about 23 hours on 12 flights by month end.

    These preliminary tests revealed

  • This was a test flight for a pratt and whitney engine modification

  • no preflight inspection, control gust lock left in place. Always move your controls to their maximum values for freedome of movement!

  • Do they often let sightseers at airports stand right on the edge of the runway and take video?

  • Yes. Most airports are not major international airports with congested traffic. So people really can just walk up and touch the plane and chat with the pilot and such, there is no need for high security.

  • looks fake

  • If I remember, the control surface locks were never removed as part of the pre flight checks.

  • It must have been right engine reverse thrust . RUDDER WAS IN NEUTRAL DURING THE TURN !

  • Bearing in mind that they do not fit ejector seats to planes like this, do you honestly, in your wildest dreams, believe ANYBODY could possibly EVER survive a nosedive crash like that ?. Are you clinicaly insane or just plain old fashioned stupid?.

  • I think old fashioned stupid.. all three crew members were killed.

  • i dont think a fighter pilot would even think to try that...

  • what were they trying ?

  • and they are dead....

  • K, theres 2 types of wind shear..The first is a sudden increase in headwind component. When this happens the aircraft balloons and the fear is a sudden drop in airspeed and or sudden drop in altitude when the gust subsides. The second is a consistant strong headwind component following a sudden drop in headwind windspeed. The fear here rapid airspeed and alt loss...I dont see it here. Sorry

I say elavator control loss or possible stall .My 2 cents. Either way a shame. My respect to the families.

  • not pilot error!! this can happen on take off its called a wind shear, ive flown many planes and if your not ready for this it can get out of control and lead to what you just saw, of course its alot harder to deal with in bigger planes. they were done about 20 feet off the ground. so sad.

  • The report says that this was a typical pilot error. When the plane did came out the repair station, the pilot should have noticed, as it is a normal operation, that the governs were fixed by repaireman to the mast. The pilot unscrewed it for him but not the copilote one and the plane falls...

  • where did that dumb bastard get his license??

  • did the people live :S?

  • Of course not lol...

  • OFtheOeople, you should go lay down before you fall and hurt yourself man. Playing with the Hippy Cabbage will do this to brain dead people, ya know?

  • He's obviously a tin hat wearing f*cktard. I wouldn't even waste my time acknowledging him.

  • This is not a fake at all dude, this airplane was just tested out of rapair and improvements and had a security on when taking of, so the pilot couldn't put it of. This is a stupid accident...

  • For crying out loud, is there ever an end to the clan of testicle heads who yell "fake!" with nearly every video they watch, then top their claims off with conspiracies about the WTC attacks?

    Iy iy iy.

  • Anticyclonic:

I 100% agree with you on the 1st point but would recommend you further research your 2nd.

I look at it like this: if the CIA and those behind them can assasinate one of the greatest Presidents the USA has had, in broad daylight, then blame it on a lone radical gunman.. then they can do just about any damn thing they like. Oh and lets not forget they then assasinated the accused (LHO)and then assasinated the assasin (JR) before it all got to court.

    Come on, catch up !.

  • Anyone who says this is a fake is a damned moron who probably think 9/11 was a conspiracy.

  • Wing-over makes me think there's an engine malfunction, but I also didn't see any control surfaces move.

  • Very sad story to this demonstration crash, RIP.

  • omg

  • the plane looks fake

  • Good Dosh you know that pilot is dead. Its sad.

  • why do you ceep filming it?

  • fake shit

  • Took of with the gust locks still fitted after re-furb. Bad oversight!

  • u all being fool hahahah that not real

  • whats wrong?????

  • oh my .....thats horrible! :(

  • ya ya plane crash blah blah blah....ok

What I find is just bizarre is the comment the guy makes at the end. He obviously is just standing there for some time. And his voice is so even. doesnt anyone else just find his reaction strange?

  • all you assholes need gassing. gust lock ffs.

  • Dead weight?

  • it was RC

  • slip of the stick? that could have been cause by just a spazm in the pilots hand, those things dont need much throw to do that

  • Is that a DHC Caribou?

  • not funny

  • what went wrong tho, is that bcz pilot didnt allow plane to get enough ground speed???

  • First thought in my mine was this: why did the pilot rotate the plane so deeply?

  • i dont know much bout planes but tht takeoff look quite steep, THT guys was like "i can not believe it"

  • This wasn't a cargo plane, but an experimental. These were flown by "new" test pilots, and over-exaggerated it's performance. This happened just out of Gimli, Manitoba, Canada - not too far from where I live.

  • "...and the 154 passengers survived with no sustained injuries along with the 2 well-trained pilots, this was just a bumpy landing folks, Tim Tokagawa reporting live, back to you, Susan" LOL

  • what a shame if it is an rc plane...unlucky but if it was real SHAMER!!!

  • it was a chinese prototype, the pilot tok off in heavy wind.

  • I'll bet it sucked being the pilot. What do YOU think?

  • this is from a game

  • Preflight ! Preflight! Preflight! Let's all learn from this horrific footage and ensure this will never happen again.(This isnt the first time is's happened)

  • is this for real?

the camera man "I cannot belive it"

non shocking actions of the cameraman or w/e

i think its abit fake.. -.-"

  • im not 100% sure but i think this was a remote controlled crash done for research. (someone correct me if im wrong) but i believe this was a turbine stall test done in 1992

  • Turbo prop upgrade test flight. Owner's son decided to sit in the right seat just before the flight. Both were killed. Pilots hand found smashed against internal control lock he was trying to remove at the last minuite. Notice control surfaces don't move during takeoff or short flight.

  • well shit man the kockpit went straight down into the ground with a fuckin plane crashing on your back....i dont think so

  • Why did he put too much yaw movement in on takeoff?

  • yeah it seems like a normal take off the about 2 seconds it suddenly pitched backwards throwing it into a stall.

  • I believe this was the prototype for the turboprop conversion of the DH Caribou, from what I am told, external control locks were in place...

  • As a pilot myself my opinion is cargo broke loose & slid to rear causing a fatal CG balance... or cargo wasn't loaded properly to begin with (most likely). Classic CG problem either way. Happens more often than you think. Make a paper airplane, tape a penny near the middle & throw it. It will fly the same way. Whoever loaded it probably wasn't qualified to do so.

  • Man you must be some pilot to determine the cause of a crash from this video. In anycase, the NTSB report differs from your opinion and said the pilot's failure to remove the control lock caused the crash.

    -Robert, CFII

  • What's the FAA or NTSB incident/ accident case # then?

  • Not sure why you are interested in the official report since you apparently can determine the cause of a crash by watching youtube videos, but here it is anyway...

The report is contained in ICAO Adrep Summary 6/94 (#79)

    "Narrative:

The aircraft took off for a test flight for a turbine-engine conversion programme. It climbed steeply, rolled to the right and crashed in a nose-down, rightwing-low attitude."

  • did it really, thanks i wouldnt have noticed, my report summarises that it is FAKE and you are a gullable smeghead for believing otherwise.

  • Hey smart-ass...then give us that NTSB report # that you read, or even a tail number?, identify the airfield?, a news clipping?, anything from any airport, Coroner records, Pilot names, flight records... we'll be waiting... or shut your mouth, jackass!

  • I'll copy this again since you were unable to read it the first time. The report is contained in "ICAO Adrep Summary 6/94 (#79)" and I provided you the narrative. I can only do so much for you. Youtube prevents URLs.

I've been shown this video in Check Pilot classes and in FIRC classes as a classic case of no doing a proper preflight. Finger nail parts were found on the control lock.

But you've already determined the cause by watching youtube so why do you care about official reports?

  • it was control locked sad thing to over look:{

  • WATCH AMER0

  • Control lock was still installed.

  • well i ment to say that the stabelator trim was set wrong

  • what the heck is a stabelator trim? there is no stabelator. Its called airleon trim or elevator trim. In this case, elevator.

  • i would say that the angle of insodence was set wrong on take off, due to a wheight and balence problem

  • Let me help you with your spelling. First it is called angle of incidence and you cannot change it on this airplane just the trim

  • hey ty for helping me with my spelling. i have a problem with spelling as you can see. do you agree that the crash was caused by a weight and balance problem? and also , what type of aircraft was that?

  • that was rather stupid, taking off and fulling up at that angle...

anyway i hope that poor piot is ok :(

  • somehow I think hes dead

  • I am not sure the pilot just pulled up..I think it was a cargo plane and the cargo shifted towards the back of the plane.

  • every body die of course imbecile and the problem was a too aft cg

  • its real becasue if u line up the black line when he is about to crash at 00:17 it hasnt moved when he films the fire

  • did the pilot die?

  • Kind of...

  • Nope. The pilot walked away. You can see him walking from the smoke in the 2nd part.

  • i cant!!!!! your comment is fake!!!

  • You are correct.

My comment is not fake. It's just ridiculous, as it was meant to be.

Naturally, it would be virtually impossible for anyone to survive that wreck--let alone "walk from the smoke"

  • LOL

  • VF101DutchDuck _l please read the earlier posts. It is a fact the control locks were on. NOthing to do with airmanship - except remembering ones pre-flight checks.

  • he took off to fast, no speed = stall, that close to the ground = this

  • It is real.

Happened in 1992 in Canada. It was a plane that was being tested with new engines and the control locks were not disengaged prior to take off. There was not load shift as the plane was empty.

    Narrative:

The aircraft took off for a test flight for a turbine-engine conversion programme. It climbed steeply, rolled to the right and crashed in a nose-down, rightwing-low attitude.

  • That explains! I was of the ones thinking it was a (loose) cargo shift.

  • load shift? good theory and may have froze the control cables in the process, explaining the turn to the right instead of just stalling and coming straight down. I am sure its real, camera man probably stopped filiming at inpact and later after the shock wore off turned on again

  • idiot.. the blast wave made the camera move and the oil and gas.. especially plane gas wich is purer than a normal car gas catches fire very quickly

  • load shift aft?
