it works with whatever system you have cable, satellite etc there are no monthly fees Once you buy and install the equipment that is it. I have been running slingbox for several years, first on the treo now on the iphone and i love it (Iphone has a bigger screen)

slingbox is not limited to wifi spots only. the video is better when running on wifi. but it will stream perfectly fine to my iphone using 3G.

Does anyone know if the quality of video improves if you get the HD version of the Slingbox? I have a slingbox pro and not too impressed with the quality of the video in 3G or Wifi, there's an HDMI cable thats sold separately for this model but before I do so just wanted to know if there's a big difference in quality on the iPhone.

Apple TV is an in-home solution. Slingbox, at least as far as an application on the iPhone is concerned, is for mobile purposes. It's no more a competitor to Apple TV than the iPhone itself is.
