@L3NNY9000 you should also leave it on in the day till nightfall or a little after dark then turn it off. Too little basking time is bad but so is too much.
@k12rising I wanted to get a gecko as my friend had one but i got a cumberland slider turtle and they are so fun gecko's just hide all day my turtle does cute things realy easy to look after u shud get 1 =]
@BDoggy45 Because it thinks your going to feed it my ones do it all the time there not sceared of you. if they are I would try hand feeding them it makes them happy to be around you because they know you wont come to harm them
@RyuMSEA the sun provides uv light , that's why if you keep your turtles in a pond outside , you don't have to provide them with a uv lamp , while held in captivity you do
@THEFRANCO15 LOL ikr?! when i was watching it i'm like "cool video...good advice.." then i hear "Im not just talking about the feet" and it ends xD SEXUAL.
your talking about a turtle tank setup and behind you ae two turtles who are in a way too small aquarium..... lol... was that a sexual innuendo at the end?
I am looking into getting a mississppi male map turtle. I was thinking of a 10 gallon tank. Is this too small? I am new to turtles and need some advise, like what brands of filters I should look for and things I should do or buy to make sure he is healthy. I am not looking for hate, I just want some advice to better the life of my future turtle. It would be great if someone responded, thanks.
@iPOOberlinwoods you need 10 gallons for every inch of shell. if you cant afford a large enough tank, rubber maid or steralite containers work well, you can find them at walmart or any other store of the kind. your going to need a turtle dock, substrate if you want it, if you use gravel make sure they are large or your turtle could eat them. you're going to need a filter that is 3 times larger than the amount of water in your tank. so if you have 20 gallons of water your going to want one for 60
@iPOOberlinwoods gallons because turtles are way more messy than fish. you're also going to need a heat lamp and uvb bulbs, a good site to go to for all your questions would be turtletimes or austin's turtle page
you call yourslef a reptile person but i bet all youve done is said "ok ime gona find out some info on wikipedia about these things for tommorrows video record thats gona get us some views"..................... dude the video is 1 minute and a half long!!!!
Just like everyone else is saying, those tanks are way too small for that size of turtle. I have always been told the water needs to be at least 2 times their length. I have a 5 inch red eared slider in a 75 gallon.
The two turtles in the background are in a waaaaay too small tank! A glass aquarium of 25-50 gallons or more is most suitable for turtle. that tank doesnt look at lest 10 gallons! D:<
thinking of getting a turtle and put it in my 250-260 litre tank i have a fluval 206 filter and 2 air pumps and a backround that looks real, but i dont have so much gravel , i have 4 piranhas in it that are about 6-7 inches they eat goldfishes that are bigger then they are, do u think i can get a turtle in my tank? if so, can u tell me what type of turtle i can buy, how much it cost, how big they get, what they eat,and the requirements, and if i can order them at the closest pet store. plz reply.
my turtle for some reason cant sink to the bottom of my tank. its always floating on the top.its not flaoting lop sided but i can see it trying to swim to the bottom but it cant can someone tell me the problem please
@FuzzieBuddies only if the lights have the right UVA/UVB rays and wattage. UVA/UVB lights are important for nice healthy shells and skin. The light should also put out enough heat for them too.
Apparently yes. A normal bulb doesn't give off UV rays or something. I've had a slider for 4 days or so and I still need to get one, I just have a heat lamp right now and it doesn't seem to be basking at all.
@CooperSnow k thanks for letting me know im trying to catch a baby no luck yet nut this week where i live its gonna hit 80 so i probaly will find one :)
@donius22 Good luck lol, I remember trying to catch one as a kid. Mine's really good with it's eyes, if it sees me it immediately pauses or hides. You might also want to take at least 2 or something, I feel bad taking mine away from the others at the pet store so I'll probably be buying another soon.
i created an above tank basking area using an old bird nest box. i took the roof off to provides a place for the light to be mounted and theres a ramp going into the water so the turtle can climb in and out fo the water. my only problem is that my turtle has yet to even use the ramp to bask. he spends all of his time in the water and never basks. ive put food in the box and on the ramp to lure him out but it does not work. can some one please help me with this
You might want to consider your water temperature, or your air temperature, as sometimes it takes a difference in temperature to entice the turtles to get out. Keep it slightly warmer outside the water than inside. As for the food, your turtle is basically incapable of feeding outside of the water (if it's a red eared slider) which means that putting food outside of the water probable won't help.
yes, turtles need to bask and warm up (in sunlight or artificial uvb bulb) because they cant digest their food on their own without a heat source, keep them cold and they will die.
turtles wont die from not haveing a uv bulb but it can lead to illness , if you have a turtle and dont have a uv bulb then you really should get one ,,and do you meen your turtles just stay in the water ?
turtles can get bone loss desease and their shell can get really soft if you dont have one ...i dont right now because they are awfully exspensive but if you dont have one right now take your turtle of side in you back yard or front lawn and let him or her run around for about 15/20 minuts a day that should keep him healthy if you dont have one also you will see pealling of the shell when he does not have enough water on him or unv lights.. that shoyuld work also you and you turtle will enjoyit
thanks .well i do have 2 turtles red eared sliders , i see some peeling off the shell and i'm still using that red lightbulb for them. not sure if thats healthy for their shells or for them cuz i do see sum peeling from shell.. ive been using it for 2months now.
yeah a red heat lamp is infa red i think and they work ....just leave it on for 12 hours a day ... a normal bulb would work tho ...if its just for heat that is
Ok. what if my turtle doesnt know how to swim?......i mean serisouly i put it in like kind of deep water n i have a ramp for it to climb on n it just sinks in the bottom n i left it there for like 10 min n it wouldnt swim up then when it tried to he would swim it just assumed that it was gonna get air then yeah i got scared n pulled it bak so it can catch air lol what sgould i do? its weird huh>>????
i have a personal experince i recomend the Zilla Aqatic Turtle care setup its just 1 big box comes with 1 20gal tank 1 filtration system and a few water cleaning things. I got my from petco but u can proly find 1 somewhere else it works good only thing i recomend getting if u dont have yet is like a rock or 1 from a pet store but if u cant go right away dont worry this a floatin 1 in the box
i owna red slider and his cage right now is 12x12 inches, and my turtle is about the size of my hand, and im 13. should i change his cage now? and how much water must be put into the cage? height.
It doesn't have to be UV!!! Stop saying that! My family has owned and bred turtles (RES turtles) for 10 years and we haven't used a UV light. All of our turtles are healthy too.
That varies. Depends on the size/wattage of the bulb. Obviously the more wattage, the bigger and hotter the bulb usually is. Most of the time there's guidlines on the basking bulb box.
mmm well i have a res and it is the size of a quarter just got it 2 weeks ago i have it in a 10 gallon tank with a lamp baskin area a heater and cute back wall paper i will make a video as soon as possible 2 show hope that answer all ur questions anymore plz comment me 009canon and i will repay the fav
hey i have 2 res and their the size of a quater but when i fill their tank they swim like their having a panic attack or something plz reply on my page plz help
they are illegal under three inches lol and not v ery good swimmers when young only put about 4-6 inches over their shell hight make sure they have dry basking spot they can get on and uv light and filter and heater aroud 75 degrees i keep mine use underwater thermometer to recored temp
I wasn't referring to the guy on the video. It was directed at some guy who left a comment saying that "turtles" drown in water because his did. Duh, if its a land tortoise, it will drown. If its a Red Ear Slider or some other aquatic turtle, he did not say.
@L3NNY9000 you should also leave it on in the day till nightfall or a little after dark then turn it off. Too little basking time is bad but so is too much.

It doesn't have to be UV!!! Stop saying that! My family has owned and bred turtles (RES turtles) for 10 years and we haven't used a UV light. All of our turtles are healthy too.

how far does the light have to be from the basking area?
leonardbutkiewicz93 2 years ago
That varies. Depends on the size/wattage of the bulb. Obviously the more wattage, the bigger and hotter the bulb usually is. Most of the time there's guidlines on the basking bulb box.

I wasn't referring to the guy on the video. It was directed at some guy who left a comment saying that "turtles" drown in water because his did. Duh, if its a land tortoise, it will drown. If its a Red Ear Slider or some other aquatic turtle, he did not say.
