not tryin to sound like a party pooper, but this workout is definitely not effective for everyone...i did a week of these workouts...keeping in mind the rest time....yea i wasn't sore at all...usually after any of my conventional workouts i get sore...guess this is good for endomorph or mesomorph not ectomorph..
Great stuff, Dorian is the man. I used this type of training and gained 2lbs a week for 28 weeks, good huh. Intensity, intensity, intensity. Eat as hard as you train.
This videos series changed my workouts completely. i followed what they did here pretty much (I changed a couple of exercises due to injuries/comfort). Follow this workout plan, high intensity, low volume, plenty of rest, eat well, and there is no bleaping way you will not gain size. Forget high-volume/one bodypart per day regimes, especially if you are a natural. Seriously, watch this series in YT for all parts and is all you need. Thank you Mr Yates for showing me the way.
Hey Guys. Just want to make it clear: is it really one warm up set for each exercise and then JUST one working set to failure, or should there be more working sets (say three, four), each 6-8 reps and only last set till failure? I used to think you should do couple sets of each exercise.
@RlNCE With HIT, you use several sets to work up to the heaviest set which you should take to failure. Let's say you're going to bench 300lbs for your last set, you could warm up by using 100lbs for your first set, 200lbs for the second (also a warm up set) and 300lbs for the working set which you should take to failure.
i am just a guy working out for 7 years. i have my limits. i dont use steroids. my arm cant go up more than 42 cm. at certain bodyfat level. same as my other body parts. they are genetically limited. i dont have a six pack either. but i look good enough for me. the point i am saying these that i know going beyond what i have, require steroids. because my body just dont hold anymore muscle. this is why bodybuilding in its core need steroids. to shape something, you simply need more of that.
@MrCrytag LOL? steroids work with any kind of diet you dumbass, ronnie coleman ate dirty pretty much whole year round until he was like 4 weeks out. taking steroids makes you burn fat very easily while building muscle.
@MrCrytag lmao, ever heard of clen? or wait no bulking/cutting means fuck all when you're on high dosages on clen because you'll just cut down fat while gaining mass, please dont bother arguing because 1. you dont take steroids and 2. you havent been lifting for 5 years like i have.
@warforglory At long last!Someone who talks the truth! Genetics, you can't fight them.I know someone who smokes like a train, eats crap, never works out,but he has a six pack and is completely ripped! I know others at the gym,who eat clean and work their butts off, they are really physically fit-but do not have six packs. All the famous bodybuilders have used chemical concoctions that would blow your mind,$100s of supplements every month.Thats the dirty truth.
@warforglory I disagree with you buddy, sorry. The only limit is the one you are setting. Steroids are not your only answer. You must consider body type, training intensity and type, rest and recovery, diet and supplementation. But most of all, what you are trying to achieve. If to want to be Dorians level, that might be a bit diffifult (not impossible), you must have a specific goal or target. A lean, muscular, shapely body is not bodybuilding, and is not hard to achieve.
I dont understand why its only 2 exercises for biceps and one of those exercises is a single set of barbell curls? If you watch the blood & guts dvd when Dorain was training to compete he did a lot more for his biceps so why now say 2 exercises is all you require. I would never question Dorain Yates but surely the last thing your biceps will do training like this, is grow?
@19mac82 Yates could train a lot more cause he was on roid back then. Things are different when you're natural and Yates' low volume type of training would totally work for some people. But I agree with you man smaller muscles like biceps would respond better to high volume training, at least for me. So my advice is you just gotta try it all and see what's best for you.
@bambarby I agree with what you said. I am currently following this routine but Im gunna have to tweak it a little, I train intense but still dont quite feel like its enough so gunna add a few more sets maybe a few exercises and see how it goes. For example, his delt/tricep section doesn't include anything for traps, no front shoulder work etc etc.
@xRolphy95 it means that you cannot do any more reps after that since your muscles are at failure point. For example, when you bench press with highset weght you can handle you can only do 6 reps, so at 6th rep you reach at your failure point and cannot do 7th rep.
Guys is it recommended to do full body workouts or train two muscles groups simultaneously (like in this video) OR is it a better idea to work each muscle group seperately? (once a week) I would appreciate some feedback from experienced builders. Thanks......
@amcd981 No more than two muscles a workout. Try a 4 day split. This is an example
Mon - Chest/Bis
Wed - Legs
Thurs - Shoulders/ Tris
Friday - Legs
Start off with the basic compound movements then start adding isolation and more sets. Oh and if you decide to look at my account to see if im big because that would reinforce my info, I have the build of a 5 year old little girl back then aha
ive tried DY's training principles and i enjoyed them. so much you can gain from listening to this man. i dont train 1set to failure currently though.
It appears that flat or Incline dumbbell press needs to be done with the dumbbells tilted and not straight because this takes stress off the shoulders. I assume that’s what that man was doing when Dorian Yates was spotting him on Incline dumbbell press. 4:37
@bobdu404 You should be able to finish this workout in about 30 minutes per person. Now you HAVE to have a spotter on almost every one of these to lift it up so you do the entire workout with a spotter then you switch and spot the other guy. When you can't push it up anymore your partner will lift it up and let go so you can bring it down, that builds your negative resistance. This workout is so intense you won't shit right for about the first 3 days.
HIT is very good but I dont think amateur people should try it.They must first go easy and learn to link the mind with the muscle in any exercise and that takes time.Even with enough experience,i think that many exercises are dangerous in HIT:barbell press behind neck, wide grip chin ups behind nake, any kind of deadlift, reverse barbel curls to name a few.In a absolute failure status with this exercises, injuries may occur.
@JimboJ1981 did u c these dudes. They are at pretty good level. Def very high level intermediate. If u go down as slow as Dorian wants its harder because ur taxing the negative part of the rep also. Much more Intense.
@JimboJ1981 I am not Dorian Yates, but Yes any level can do this. DY is 6 times Mr Olympia and used a system similar to this. It does seem like less, but he uses quality reps. 1-2 warm up sets and a max working set. You need a good training partner for this though, help and motivation as it demands real focus.
@2090753 Actually I am not a bodybuilder. I am a regular 84kg athletic trainer/instructor 46 years old. I do not use and never have used any form of drug in my life. I do believe though that it is your own choice in what you do. I respect the hard work that bodybuilders and other athletes do to achieve their goals. I am aware of drug use in sports, but you cannot take away the hard work and dedication needed to achieve professional status.
@2090753 Steroids are not some form of magic, amongst other things they help speed up the recovery. If you took steroids and did not train you would not look like Dorian Yates. I have many friends who are BB's, and I am aware of their drug use, but they train hard and it does not conflict with My training. I am not envious of the goals achieved from grugs. I preach fitness and good health natrually. But I am not critical of others and their choices. Good luck to each and everyone.
@2bsure seriously....I wish everyone had your mindset. it shouldn't matter that the guy next to you is on drugs. of course he's bigger, he's on drugs! but thats his choice. live and let live.
Quality!! Dorian explains everything nice and clear, very observant too, I like that in a trainer. Its not about ego, he knows what the guy can and cannot do. He was right about cardio stuff, level 16, why? used to be 12 and that was mental. People dont want to do hard work anymore, they just want to believe they are.
lol and my idiot friend who prolly got a big chest due to genetics told me to focus on flat and incline bench press, don't do or minimal decline pec press!!!
@imcoolerthnu HIT is the High intensity training. That means
1)hit the muscles preferably in a full range of motion
2)Fewer sets than usuall per exercise, with slow control negatives,in this case 1-2 warmup sets and then the main set. After that, next exercise
3)In the main set, when you cant realy do any more, your partner helps you to do a couple-or more of negatives until you really cant do(that means control)any more negatives and that is called muscular failure stage 3.
If I did a shit load of steroids, I too would've been a bodybuilding champion. Nothing but FAKE, FAKE AND MORE FAKE. Why dont all the idiots out there understand that this sport is about sticking injections up your ass to be the best.
You are aware you have to put in the training as well as taking steroids? None of it comes easy and if you think it does you are an idiot, steroids will add to strength yes but they won't automatically define your muscles to contest standard.. don't be such an idiot.
@PUSSY100ish No, you would've not. Almost every single professional bodybuilder in the world takes steroids, yet there is only a handful of champions. This sport is much more defined by individual genetics than by steroids.
@PUSSY100ish They all use steroids but that doesn't mean they don't have to work hard to gain the muscle. Steroids are necessary in bodybuilding because you can't get as big as they are without them. And chances are you wouldn't have been a champion, because even with steroids you have to be incredibly genetically gifted and dedicate your whole life to bodybuilding (although you might have been, I can't say). The principles Dorian uses work, at least they have worked for me (i dont use steroids)
i copied this guys routine back in 98 and i gained like 15pounds of muscle that year,This routine is the exact same workout that he posted in musclemag in 98,but more detailed.thanks dorian
i don't know .. i'm not convinced with these workouts. i tried them i don't get tiered even ,,at least the person must feel that he did something at the gym . not 2 sets
DORIAN IS A LIAR! He doesn't really stick to Mike Mentzer type of training at all. I have seen his "blood and guts" video and he does many sets of every exercise. And no, these are not all warm-up sets. Some people who have seen him train in person have told me that he does about 6 or 7 heavy sets per exercise and several exercises per bodypart. he says it helps the blood flow. BULLSHIT!!
@PUSSY100ish If you watch the training tips video (in this series)Dorian talks about this being a 6 week trainer and change up to your exercise routine. In my opinion it is just that....a six week shock, intended to stimulate new growth NOT a work this way and become a 6 time Mr. Olympia manual.
have you seen the blood and guts video, count the sets and he trains exactly like in this video, just that some exercise are different in this one then in Blood and Guts.
@reid1709 You'll notice in the video that by the time they go onto the incline dumbell press the pec is majorly fatigued by doing the decline bench press. The fact they're only taking a minute break in between sets also contributes to the stress on the muscle, the point is you don't have to spend hours on end in the gym to see big results. So yes this is intense training lol
The word intense is thrown around a lot with you guys and dorian, but does that exactly entail, because hes only doing like 3 exercises with like 2 sets for each. I dont understand how this is intense. Does he now take any breaks between sets?
After I watched this video, I think, that I wasted 6 month of pointless workout. I always though "more is better". In half year I gained only 6kg. I was making exercises for 2-2.5h a day. Now I am going to test Dorian Yates program. i hope I will gain some weight.
ps. Is it good idea to make some cardio (10-15min) before lifting, even if I am on mass gain program?
just a question, I've been doing this workout for about 4 weeks, seen very good gains, but when i do back, i can't lift as much weight due to doing biceps the day before, would it be best if i switched back day with delts and triceps?
@italoirish888 hey man.. in my opinion it's enough for me.. you slightly hit your biceps when you're working out your chest and a lot when you're doing back. a lot of people overtrain their biceps when they isolate it one day then work out back, this is enough and will make your biceps grow decent while your other parts are getting huge..
@italoirish888 I think hammer curls involve more of the brachialis muscle or something, so he saves that muscle to be worked when he does back, i honestly don't know for sure, but from watching all 4 or 5 videos thats what i see lolol.
I like how Dorian emphasises that weight does not matter. Most people do not realise this until they have been training a long time. If you are working to your maximum and a little beyond it doesn't matter what you are lifting (within reason). Discussions about "how much" are for the weightlifters and powerlifters.
I switch weekly between straight bar and dumbbells and I train exactly like in the video; explosive push, keep it up 1 second and bring it slowly towards me.
Is this a training programme for beginners or what ? I'm 17 and started going to gym 4 months 1/2 ago. I usually work 8-12 sets maximum per each muscle group. This is my programme for chest:
@Malfod Only 60 kg's on the bench ? and your 17. Maybe you should drop sets ;) You should be pressing allot more than that. But no i wouldn't say you were over training, maybe drop reps and up your weight ;) but remember to maintain form. Another reason may be that you don't get enough food on-board. Nutrition is the most important thing.
@alexrm1234 I thought about about those things too. I've tried dropping sets and I managed 1 rep with 80kg on bench with some help on the positive. I'll try this kind of training from the video (though it is simillar to what I do). Moreover, could you tell me if 3 sets are enough for biceps because I'm skeptic. Or could you recommend a full-week train ? I would be very grateful ! (I'm 17, weight 60 kg, 1.80 m tall, ectomorph)
not tryin to sound like a party pooper, but this workout is definitely not effective for everyone...i did a week of these workouts...keeping in mind the rest time....yea i wasn't sore at all...usually after any of my conventional workouts i get sore...guess this is good for endomorph or mesomorph not ectomorph..

@JimboJ1981 did u c these dudes. They are at pretty good level. Def very high level intermediate. If u go down as slow as Dorian wants its harder because ur taxing the negative part of the rep also. Much more Intense.
ediot6969 2 months ago
Is this something beginners and intermediate weight lifters should do? 7 sets for chest and 3 total for biceps does seem like very little.
JimboJ1981 2 months ago
@JimboJ1981 I am not Dorian Yates, but Yes any level can do this. DY is 6 times Mr Olympia and used a system similar to this. It does seem like less, but he uses quality reps. 1-2 warm up sets and a max working set. You need a good training partner for this though, help and motivation as it demands real focus.
2bsure 2 months ago
@2bsure you have reason and money for steroids XD
2090753 2 months ago
@2090753 Actually I am not a bodybuilder. I am a regular 84kg athletic trainer/instructor 46 years old. I do not use and never have used any form of drug in my life. I do believe though that it is your own choice in what you do. I respect the hard work that bodybuilders and other athletes do to achieve their goals. I am aware of drug use in sports, but you cannot take away the hard work and dedication needed to achieve professional status.
2bsure 2 months ago
@2090753 Steroids are not some form of magic, amongst other things they help speed up the recovery. If you took steroids and did not train you would not look like Dorian Yates. I have many friends who are BB's, and I am aware of their drug use, but they train hard and it does not conflict with My training. I am not envious of the goals achieved from grugs. I preach fitness and good health natrually. But I am not critical of others and their choices. Good luck to each and everyone.
2bsure 2 months ago 46
@2bsure seriously....I wish everyone had your mindset. it shouldn't matter that the guy next to you is on drugs. of course he's bigger, he's on drugs! but thats his choice. live and let live.

Kadagis7000 2 months ago

Amazing - his principles are completely different from Arnold - I am a believer in HIT if that's what Dorian used !
kkma1453 3 months ago
@kkma1453 whats HIT?
imcoolerthnu 2 months ago
@imcoolerthnu HIT is the High intensity training. That means
1)hit the muscles preferably in a full range of motion
2)Fewer sets than usuall per exercise, with slow control negatives,in this case 1-2 warmup sets and then the main set. After that, next exercise
3)In the main set, when you cant realy do any more, your partner helps you to do a couple-or more of negatives until you really cant do(that means control)any more negatives and that is called muscular failure stage 3.
That's HIT.I call it PAIN

Awesome routine, made great progress in such a short time but found that it killed me after 8 weeks.
GraemeIsAware 3 months ago
If I did a shit load of steroids, I too would've been a bodybuilding champion. Nothing but FAKE, FAKE AND MORE FAKE. Why dont all the idiots out there understand that this sport is about sticking injections up your ass to be the best.
PUSSY100ish 3 months ago
@PUSSY100ish
You are aware you have to put in the training as well as taking steroids? None of it comes easy and if you think it does you are an idiot, steroids will add to strength yes but they won't automatically define your muscles to contest standard.. don't be such an idiot.
weewayne 3 months ago 26
@PUSSY100ish No, you would've not. Almost every single professional bodybuilder in the world takes steroids, yet there is only a handful of champions. This sport is much more defined by individual genetics than by steroids.
refuseit 3 months ago
@PUSSY100ish They all use steroids but that doesn't mean they don't have to work hard to gain the muscle. Steroids are necessary in bodybuilding because you can't get as big as they are without them. And chances are you wouldn't have been a champion, because even with steroids you have to be incredibly genetically gifted and dedicate your whole life to bodybuilding (although you might have been, I can't say). The principles Dorian uses work, at least they have worked for me (i dont use steroids)

this needs to be clearer. are you not meant to rest between sets at all? i come out of the gym tired but not completely done at all.
relyanddefy 3 months ago
i copied this guys routine back in 98 and i gained like 15pounds of muscle that year,This routine is the exact same workout that he posted in musclemag in 98,but more detailed.thanks dorian

we don't have decline bench press in our gym. so i do 100 dips instead.
arjay2002ph 3 months ago
i don't know .. i'm not convinced with these workouts. i tried them i don't get tiered even ,,at least the person must feel that he did something at the gym . not 2 sets
zelioni 3 months ago
DORIAN IS A LIAR! He doesn't really stick to Mike Mentzer type of training at all. I have seen his "blood and guts" video and he does many sets of every exercise. And no, these are not all warm-up sets. Some people who have seen him train in person have told me that he does about 6 or 7 heavy sets per exercise and several exercises per bodypart. he says it helps the blood flow. BULLSHIT!!
PUSSY100ish 3 months ago
@PUSSY100ish If you watch the training tips video (in this series)Dorian talks about this being a 6 week trainer and change up to your exercise routine. In my opinion it is just that....a six week shock, intended to stimulate new growth NOT a work this way and become a 6 time Mr. Olympia manual.
iCiVo 3 months ago
@PUSSY100ish
have you seen the blood and guts video, count the sets and he trains exactly like in this video, just that some exercise are different in this one then in Blood and Guts.

Should I do this at 16 years old?
RoroCWalker 3 months ago
@reid1709 You'll notice in the video that by the time they go onto the incline dumbell press the pec is majorly fatigued by doing the decline bench press. The fact they're only taking a minute break in between sets also contributes to the stress on the muscle, the point is you don't have to spend hours on end in the gym to see big results. So yes this is intense training lol
BlackBoltEndgame 4 months ago
The last exercise is cheat curls. Popularize by Arnold.
gymtonicful 4 months ago
@gymtonicful no it is not they are normal curls but when you are getting to failure you can do a bit of cheating to get a bit more out of the muscle
barbosa973 3 months ago
The word intense is thrown around a lot with you guys and dorian, but does that exactly entail, because hes only doing like 3 exercises with like 2 sets for each. I dont understand how this is intense. Does he now take any breaks between sets?
reid1709 4 months ago
Man he should train me!
fixdeluxe1 4 months ago
After I watched this video, I think, that I wasted 6 month of pointless workout. I always though "more is better". In half year I gained only 6kg. I was making exercises for 2-2.5h a day. Now I am going to test Dorian Yates program. i hope I will gain some weight.
ps. Is it good idea to make some cardio (10-15min) before lifting, even if I am on mass gain program?

just a question, I've been doing this workout for about 4 weeks, seen very good gains, but when i do back, i can't lift as much weight due to doing biceps the day before, would it be best if i switched back day with delts and triceps?

you think this is enough for your biceps? He only does two exercises. No hammers? Honest question
italoirish888 4 months ago
@italoirish888 hey man.. in my opinion it's enough for me.. you slightly hit your biceps when you're working out your chest and a lot when you're doing back. a lot of people overtrain their biceps when they isolate it one day then work out back, this is enough and will make your biceps grow decent while your other parts are getting huge..

@italoirish888 I think hammer curls involve more of the brachialis muscle or something, so he saves that muscle to be worked when he does back, i honestly don't know for sure, but from watching all 4 or 5 videos thats what i see lolol.

@MrRajguitar
Yeah, I am aware of that. It just seemed a little unbelievable that you could have such an intense workout, from this short amount of time and stuff.
Fruddle123 4 months ago
I like how Dorian emphasises that weight does not matter. Most people do not realise this until they have been training a long time. If you are working to your maximum and a little beyond it doesn't matter what you are lifting (within reason). Discussions about "how much" are for the weightlifters and powerlifters.

I switch weekly between straight bar and dumbbells and I train exactly like in the video; explosive push, keep it up 1 second and bring it slowly towards me.
Malfod 4 months ago
Is this a training programme for beginners or what ? I'm 17 and started going to gym 4 months 1/2 ago. I usually work 8-12 sets maximum per each muscle group. This is my programme for chest:
-3 sets flat bench press 12-10 reps 50kg, 8 reps 55 kg, 6 reps 60 kg
-3 sets incline bench press 12 reps 40 kg, 8 reps 45kg, 4-6 reps 50kg
-3 sets decline bench press 10 reps 50 kg, 8 reps 55kg, 6 reps 60 kg
-2-3 sets peck-deck
Am I overtraining ? (I take no supplements at all !)
Malfod 4 months ago
@Malfod Only 60 kg's on the bench ? and your 17. Maybe you should drop sets ;) You should be pressing allot more than that. But no i wouldn't say you were over training, maybe drop reps and up your weight ;) but remember to maintain form. Another reason may be that you don't get enough food on-board. Nutrition is the most important thing.
alexrm1234 4 months ago
@alexrm1234 I thought about about those things too. I've tried dropping sets and I managed 1 rep with 80kg on bench with some help on the positive. I'll try this kind of training from the video (though it is simillar to what I do). Moreover, could you tell me if 3 sets are enough for biceps because I'm skeptic. Or could you recommend a full-week train ? I would be very grateful ! (I'm 17, weight 60 kg, 1.80 m tall, ectomorph)
Thank a lot for tips !
