My Duo-Art has an identical mechanism, and is a 1926 Model 60, I think. Yours appears to have most or all of it's original leather and cloth, as does mine. Built to last, eh? Sounds great, too! Bill
Thats incredible. Just watching the mechanism fascinates me. I have a 1912 Aeolian Weber Themodist Metrostyle that I will begin restoring soon. I have a number of Duo-Art rolls and wonder how they will relate to that piano.
You can play the DA rolls on it but will have to block out the 1st 4 and last 4 holes for the expression , all you will just get tinkering keys playing though the song :)
I've had some luck playing Duo-Art rolls on my Metrostyle Themodist by taping the holes as you suggested but leaving the themodist "snakebite" holes in the trackerbar open. They line up with the snakebites on the duo-art rolls and will give a bit of accent theming, but it's by no means as good as a duo-art roll on a full duo-art player.
This roll sounds remarkably close to Gershwin himself, and I know, because I've heard Gershwin's audio recordings, and also those of his contemporaries.
Beautiful. Never seen a motorised player piano with the case open. I'd miss the pedals though I would like my keys to move like yours. For some daft reason British players (mine is a Triumph Autopiano) didn't move the keys during play.
Hi Stephen , my Lipp Grand Player is German and the keys dont move on that either (well not correctly as your ment to lock them in player mode) .Alot of UK players dont have moving keys and there reason was long the lines of your to listen to the music and enjoy it not watch it lol.
i totally love this song..! first heard it from the cd "gershwin plays gershwin", and i swore i HAD to find the music scores after hearing. but unfortunately, i could not find any - not even 1 in many of the local music stores i've been to. does anyone know if the pieces in that album are published? if so, pls let me know^^
1920's, yes? Proof, as if any were needed that GG was the first white guy (with the possible exception of Crosby) to really "get" black music. Listen to those harmonies... Fats Waller could have written them... listen to those chops... Willie the Lion Smith could have played that... Godamighty, that was composed, and the Empire State Building was erected, in the same ten year span? What's happened to us?
dude, I hate to break it to you, but there were a goodly number of white pianists pre-1925 who really "got" black music... and played it excellently! To wit:
Hi, Your Weber is very similar to ours. The case is different but the internals are identical. Looking at the colour of the rubber cloth, yours seems to be very original too. Isn't it great how something as old as that (ours was built in 1926) still plays so well? Great video - thanks! Bill
Beautiful piano and nice work, i have this same song for my piano, we have a weber duo art as well, almost like yours. The Gershwin duo art rolls are rare as he didnt make to many of those.
Im also restoring a 1921 M Schultz player now.
Wish there was more people out there like us that love these pianos, i see alot going to waste.
I also restored 7 years ago a 1870 Henry Miller square grand. Keep the videos comming
Was happy to find and use this video of Artis Wodehouse's, Gershwin Plays Gershwin: The Piano Rolls recording to close a blog post on George Gershwin. It's a joy to hear how he played and what inspired him to learn to play. Thank you! Liz
Dan, Your piano looks and sounds great. This is one of Gershwin's few rolls made for Duo-Art. He made many 88-note rolls early in his career. Best, Tom
Dan: Another of my favoites. Thanks for removing the knee panel so we can see the vac pump. Great piece of mucic. Keep the rolling. Thanks, Aknabea John
A nice view of the famed 'Steamboat Pump'. Can't get better that this.
