  • taken from the tokyo tapes

  • I love all eras. I consider myself very lucky, I have a LOT of music to choose from.

  • Looks like Chet on drums... He sure supports all the Genesis gang. Hopefully, he's raking in the dough, too.

  • thought this was an interview, Idiot!

  • @tahoevic Where does it say that it is...?

  • gotta agree that Steve's creative influence and textural guitar playing was integral to the Genesis magic and things weren't the same after he left but i find much to like on And Then There Were Three and Duke. Great playing from Tony Mike and Phil : )

  • Tresspass, Nursery chryme, foxtrot, The lamb, Trick of the tail, Wind and wuthering, thats Genesis. From 78 onwards a different band with the same name, thats when their music became meaningless to me. I do like Hackett's work over the years , he contributed to some of the bands most memorable instrumental pieces and his solo work has done the memory of Genesis no harm, unlike some i could name .

  • @permaveg Oh no! I forgot to mention " Selling England by the pound" in those titles of Genesis best albums, very stupid of me.

  • People way to hard on post-Hackett Genesis... AND THEN THERE WERE THREE is a tremendous album start to finish and while things went decidedly downhill after that there are still some gems amidst the rubble in the 80s stuff.

  • @leonakita yes,and then were were three was pretty good in places,I still play it,they still did some great stuff but it got thinner on the ground but much of the atmospheres and soundscapes had gone replaced by that awful 80's harsh production.

  • @leonakita Going way back here there were naysayers when Anthony Phillips left ! And PG's departure prompted unmerciful criticism on the remaining members. But many of those critics feel by the wayside in light of the undeniable quality of TOTT and WAW. And Steve's departure triggered another round of hard criticism that intensified once it became clear Genesis were heading in a pop direction. My point is that every change to this band's lineup has lost fans and gained new ones.

  • It saddens me that Steve left. what i wouldn't give to see them all play together again...

  • Its on an old video of mine recorded in Nottingham for tv back in 90,it has been released on dvd somewhere, great track, its also on some old live albums of steves, live archive set for one.

  • Where can I find this song Depth Charge?

  • I do agree that the true essence of Genesis faded as the years went on. The truth is the bills have to be paid and most great bands go through that. I was weened on Genesis. I love everything about the band. The greatest song ever written in my humble opinion is Suppers Ready. I have seen it performed 3 times..unfortunately none of those were with Peter.

  • @DaveP72006

I use to think the pop stuff was garbage. BUt its unfortunate to say folks that there are FAR WORSE music today that the poppy genesis ever put out. Commercial pop today makes genesis' songwriting from their trio days as good as their prog stuff. Thats my opinion, i've grown to apprieciate thier later stuff but nowhere near as perfect as the early stuff.

  • is that chester thompson drumming?

  • @masternate61 yes it is

  • I like the mechanical sound from 3:36-3:59. This is an awesome track

  • steve is just an amazing guitarist and composer

  • Always a joy to listen to and watch - an amazing musician

  • Easily one of the best guitarists of all time. Thanks Steve!

  • ....anyone out there live near the Runcorn area? Moonlit Nite play their first gig on saturday 13th march at The Norton Arms. Show starts 21:30. Be there!!

  • ....anyone out there live near the Runcorn area? Moonlit Nite play their first gig on saturday 13th march at The Norton Arms. Show starts 21:30. Be there!!

  • But I like the fact you like what you like no matter what I or any one says, cheers.

  • i love all genesis era's.but just finding myself really getting into duke and abacab at this point.music goes with life-how you can relate to certain songs at different times in your life(for some people)

    take care

  • What i'm saying is those who listen to the albums you mention are looking for and getting something different from Foxtrot, Selling England etc not as good as the original stuff ,not just different. Signs of treacle to come can be found in "more fool me" and other crap.

  • its called --depth charge!!!!!

  • grandi note , niente fumo . Semplicemente grande !!

  • what song is this at 2:00?

  • @masternate61

The song is called Walking Away from Rainbows. The concert VHS was called "The Tokyo Tapes." It's from around 1997. Excellent, if you can find it!

  • @raelraven2

The song is not called Walking Away From Rainbows but Riding the Colossus. You can find the live version extracted from The Tokyo Tapes on ITunes. EZY.

  • where i can get this dvd or under what name, i used to have it as a vhs that i lost

  • Why does every Steve Hackett video turn into a discussion on what Genesis era was best?

  • Because right after he left, Genesis became a Pop act. So we're guessing, he was the last member of the band to stand against Collins and his "Lady GaGa" kind of compositions. Then again, there's nothing wrong if you like that kind of crap, but do it without profiting on a name that until then, had established itself as a pillar in Prog music, the total opposite of Pop.

  • yes totaly i agreed my pal we cant dance contains powerful prog songs

  • You and other people of low standards you mean.

  • Any one defending post Hackett Genesis, not only needs a taste transplant, but they have a diaper and glass of hot milk waiting for them back at the home.

  • I happen to think "post-Hackett" Genesis is great, along with the people who packed stadiums throughout the 80's early 90's and 2007. Supply me with a diaper, champ.

  • well said, they just became a bland pop band and not a very good one, invisible touch was one of the worst albums ever made...by any band, they did some good stuff post steve hackett but it became thin on the ground in the 80's,give me the 70's any day, great prog bands and clever pop from 10cc and abba!!

  • @DaveP72006

  • @DaveP72006 isn't that why Steve left and went on to do far better himself?

  • @DaveP72006 If you could only predict! All of the major seventies bands changed their style during the 80's and went with the flow. I'm sure they must regret their decision. Just trying to be 'trendy' kept them in the spotlight but years later listening back.........you know it was a mistake.

  • It wasn't all bad. They turned themselves into a top 10 band, sold millions of units & revitalised the Genesis brand. As a result the record companies released their entire back catalog so that instead of having to spend ages looking for an old worn out vinyl LP I could now enjoy Hackett's glorious guitar licks on brand new CDs. Winning!

  • duke and abacab are great albums(and then there were three i also love)i find myself listening to them more and more "another record" from abacab is terriffic!! i agree steve hackett was a big blow when he left -but i think it was sooo obvious on the "genesis"album the first three without him they had a vision but sadly lost it with all the fame

  • @jsilence418 Bollocks, Duke, Abacab and Genesis are superb albums.

  • @TheDensley7 Sorry i didn't aim my comment at people like you with no taste! you'll accept anything ! you wouldn't know a good album if it bit you in your stupid ass!

  • Comment removed

  • @TheDensley7 Genesis stopped making creative ingenious tasteful music and started making shit aimed at the lowest common denominator, you know , like you!

  • Willim, there are 2 versions of this song. One is "depth charge", from the time lapse album by Steve Hackett. The other name for the same song is "riding the colossus" and is to be found at the "the tokyo tapes".

    all the best!

  • yes it is bro!!

the litle work of hackettin a trick ofa tail and wind & wuthering are magnific

blood on the rooftops it´s mi favourite piece from genesis whit out peter gabriel.

you know what´s the song than play hackett later the interview?

  • Once Steve left Genesis, that was the end of a great band....

  • I agree. Genesis was never the same when Hackett left. Phil Collins wanted to make pop music and become commercialized. That's when I stopped buying their albums. I never thought Daryl Stummer did a good job on their live performances. Chester Thompson on the other hand is a GOD on drums.

  • jajja theres a lot of jerks in youtube repeat the same bullshits than others

SH is good and daryls is a virtuoso but not a songwriter .

daryls made amanzing arregements in the hackett part with him jazz metal picking style

    (playing liv of course)

    that all

  • Daryl would NEVER be a guitarist of a group like Genesis ( even that "light " pop version of the 80´s ) if he don´t own that great friendship with Phil . And Daryl only plays live with genesis , gato ... all the guitars on studio has been played by Mike .

i don know why fuckin shit would you to tray said....i wrote realy clear in english...if is true you can read and write. .......and what a kiddind to referd me pelotudo !!!

    cheers!!

  • @myg0tBUTTPLUG

Yeah, Daryl never did anything for me.

  • good guitarist but souless, steve used atmospheres and was a true writer

  • @DaveP72006 I concur sir.

Steve Hackett's Voyage of the Acolyte proved without a doubt how great of a song writer he truly is. That album has ATMOSPHERE written all over it. It was an album dubbed the "Genesis album that never was". Everybody from Genesis played on it but Tony Banks. Right there will tell you that there was conflict between Tony and Steve. Steve did the right thing by going out on his own.

  • jajaja realy? jajja .....

  • omg, wetton was once thin....

  • does anyone know the name of the song he's playing in the very beginning of this video on the spanish guitar

  • This is "Black Light", from "Bay Of Kings"

  • Comment removed

  • Note down Steve's phone number.

  • thers no way that number is still his OR still works

  • I was only joking!

  • you know, i should have known that.....i'm taking myself too seriously these days

  • i'm 14 and steve has inspired me into guitar!!!

  • Pretty cool to see Chester Thompson playing on the drums there too. Goes to show that the guys in Genesis really are good friends.

    Reunion. NOW!!!

  • what a cheesy song. great player though

  • Have to agree - like the Japan DVD but Steve's written some awesomely beautiful stuff.

  • Thanks,Dave.

  • is this from a video or documentary?

  • first part is from a 1991 documentary that was shown on uk tv bbc2,the official video release is slightly different(genesis the history),live bit is from 96 in Japan with John Wetton,Tokyo Tapes

  • This is a documentary about the genesis' history from the begining until 1991 aprox.

  • Steve Hackett is a great guitarist and Peter Gabriel sums up his guitar playing very aptly (note when he talks about "atmospheres"). That's what is unique about Hackett.

  • Steve never gets enough credit for his contributions to Genesis. Very underrated musician. His solo stuff is great, too.

  • Yes, you are right.

  • @edgyspice Nonsense, he gets plenty of credit. He's not "underrated."

  • @edgyspice Nonsense, he gets plenty of credit. He's not "underrated." He kind of sucks now, everything he does sounds like Weather Channel music.

  • at the begining of the video we watched an extrac from the documentary: "Genesis... a history".

I remember watching it a hundred times many years ago.

  • Same here... I wore that VHS out years ago is it available on DVD? Oh by the way I have this live Steve Hackett on DVD and it's a masterpiece!!!!!!
