Beside Kittinger the 'human' you are refering too was calculated to have reached a speed of 714mph so didn't break the sound barrier (768mph on land) as he was so high up there was no atmosphere and therefore cannot be a sound barrier. Any object requires additional thrust to push through the sound barrier as the effect slows the object as it reachs 768mph.

On the other hand, a diesel engine is the average car engine with cylinders, pistons and all that stuff.
