I still have my old battlewagon too , its very worn now but the missles torpedos and planes still work, but almost all the projectiles get lost or missing in action over the years.
Myself and six other friends sailed off on the battlewagon in the summer of 65. We came under several surprise attacks. Sadly two of friends did not make it back. At least till my Mom called us in for dinner.
Hell yeah! That shit's bad ass! As a Gunner's Mate in the Navy, I'd absolutely LOVE to have a USS BATTLEWAGON. I'd pass it on to my boy (whenever the wife and I make him). Damn I wish we could have kick ass toys like this now-a-days.
Sweet! Wish that had been made when I was growing up. Can you imagine a toy company trying to sell a war toy these days? Im a child of the late 80's early 90's so I had some of the last great war toys, some of the small GI-Joes (or action force as it was called on my side of the pond) toy guns made from black plastic not bright orange and a few other things. Sadly toys have become very boring since.
doesn't it seem odd that a toy is only available at a supermarket? i know this was a long time ago, but it sounds wierd to say "yeah i got my functioning battleship at the grocery store! :D"
It was a great gimmic to get parents to buy the toys. Mom's could put money down each week (lay a way) and pay off the toys before Christmas. I begged my Mom to take me grocery shopping with her so I could gaze at those wonderful toys. I actually got a few of them at Christmas.
Nah. I was born in January of '57 and getting draft cards ended three months after I turned 18. But by that time, there wasn't a draft. You just got a draft card. If you were born in '55, you didn't turn 18 until 1973, and the draft ended in '73. So, I doubt any of these kids ever went to Vietnam.
It wasn't made by Marx. This is a Deluxe Reading (Topper) toy.

That looks like a GREAT toy. I wish I'd gotten one. The ship's engine sounds like an alarm clock.

"Sold in food markets only", I remember that. I feel sorry for the poor moms trying to shop with her kids screaming about toys like this.

Saw this in Safeway,I was born in 1953. My aircraft carrier went to "Yankee Station" in 1972-73. Dropped a lot of bombs on Vietnam.

I had one and my parents bought at the Safeway. I think it was like $9.99 which was big money back then.

Guys who bought the battelwagon would have been born circa 1955 -- and the would have been too you for Vietnam.
