  • So ominous, I love it~ >_<

  • 11 chimps NEVER EVOLVED...

  • Put down the chips!

  • sorry - even if I wanted - I can't like it ...

  • You can hear someone eating around 3.00 mark.

adds to the intensity of the music :S

  • @sbsrocks That's me opening a bottle of wine and pouring a glass full! :-)

  • This sort of sounds like the pre-landing music for the mother ship in Close Encounters, eh?

  • Siis pittääkö tätä silimillä kuunnella?

  • Too bad. -.- Boring.

  • Totally awesome video.

  • The visuals for Ligeti's 'Atmospheres' cannot be made by computer. Only the mind can really conceive proper visuals for this work. Yet I do like what was done here.

  • I can see why he was picked to do the score of 2001, SO--very wall of sound--eerie outerspace.........

  • @windstorm1000 He wasn't picked to do the 2001 score. Kubrik used his Requiem and Lux Aeterna pieces without asking him. While he greatly admired the film, he was somewhat (understandably) irritated by the fact that his music was placed alongside that of Johann and Richard Strauss.

  • @alexandergreenb Thank you for correcting me on the film info--sometimes film goers get the incorrect facts or don't do enough research. Its fascinating to see back stage stories of the great films.

  • @windstorm1000 Also, "Wall of sound" is a concept from 50s pop music. I'm not sure it applies here.

  • ... Is this supposed to scare the shit out of me?

  • A nice visual tribute to this composition but isn't it already in its proper use in Kubrick's 200: A Space Odyssey? I recommend the 2001 filmwork if many fo the younger set have missed it after 42 years! Superb! I cannot think of the worlds, or words. . . . just go see it! -Mark Seibold- Artist-Astronomy Educator please search markseibold common web site name

  • this music made people be revolts, can't understand I think which we need to open our minds to listen it and try to live with, and not repudiate its existence. So there is what I think.

  • I thankyou for putting this here on youtube, but having read the comments on this page, I must confess I didnt bother looking at the video. Ligeti's music means something personal to ME, and therefore MY visuals are what is mattering atm :)

  • wat about the video? im purist, and i think that the best music is done when the only mean of expression is music, that way all emotion is focused into it rather than supporting or being supported by other means. So i wouldnt mind if the screen was black, and this is pretty close to it...

  • As a first year musicology student, this work won me for modern music. I saw the terribly complex score, and instead of the expected cacophony I heard this sublime "blur" effect. Not Stockhausen, not Cage, but Ligeti was the greatest visionary of the past century, only he wrote modern music that made you forget it was modern!

  • You did a great job here with video and sound to combine an musical experience.

    ATMOSPHERES IS A MASTERPIECE!

  • Grande windows media, qué calidad original. En realidad este tipo se pasó para elevar a niveles cuánticos el sonido y el vídeo. Se debe haber psado mucho tiempo pensándolo para editar este voluminoso cortometraje.

  • I love this! :)

  • Second idea are american sailors trapped in sunk ships in Pearl Harbor. Flicker of lite, begging, cursing, praying, yelling, alone, water in chambers, sufocation, heat, fingernails on rusty metal, no escape, no hope, no peace, no god, no rememberance, no glory, no body. Enough life to suffer, to think of nothingness, screeching of metal, water echo and slow death. 17 and still a virgin. Virgin forever in nothing. No response from god. No meaning, no comfort.

  • Use the footage of pits with dead people after the shooting. Use the same footage (mass pit in russia filmed by germans) so you'll have continuity, then zoom in dead people (think of way to hide the big grain), simulate panoramic ride thru dead but in zoom stay only in the highest zoom so that a eye ore a finger is something allmost unrecognizible. Use slow mo but think of the way that audience does not recognize it so that the parts of the dead perpetuousliy go on and on, like there is no end.

  • Very nice AVS effects, thank you. The llama kicks again. Very modern interpretation(if the avs studio is still considered modern). A great visualization to accompany Gyorgy Ligeti.

A classical rebel. No, it isn't the original acid effects when Dave Bowman entered hyperspace. Now let's all be friends and sit down and have some Central American mushroom stew. No driving over the terrain.

    ..

  • who decided what ended that piece?

  • here reminds me of the movie 2001 Space Odyssey!

  • here reminds me of the movie 2001 Space Odyssey!

  • This should never, EVER be used as the title music for The Office. Ratings would plummet.

  • lol we've wrote a test about sound clusters like this but about Penderecki's

  • the only visuals NEEDED are those in your head

  • For this music is not necessary images. Listen with closed eyes is better. Is more suggesting and hypnotic...

    Bravo Ligeti!!!

  • how did you record these, i think i can hear you eating chips in the background.

  • Hey music dorks... haha, why all the hating?? has anyone realised that this is a piece of music?? who gives a fuck about the visuals, this is about the sound... KABLAH!!!!

  • Ligeti, otro gran compositor que abrió nuevos caminos a la música...Puro genio...

  • Sorry, but I happen to agree with yurodivy1906 - if you would like to see some fantastic visuals that fit well with Ligeti's music, I'd suggest watching Kubrik's 2001... (which you mention in your spiel about the video so no doubt you are familiar).

I can stick the piece in itunes and turn on the visualiser and get a similar result (or is this how you generated your video? No offence intended).

  • 2001: A Space Odyssey

  • This song.. well not really a song.. itz rlly scary..

  • @eggz01 It is a piece :)

  • It is possible that history will look back on music of the 20th Century as full of tension, anxiety, uneasiness the collective subconscious of a people who realize the push of a button could destroy civilizations in an instant.

  • what genre of music would 'Atmospheres' and 'Requiem' fall under?

  • Symphonic. 20th Perhaps Modern Avant Garde, in the early 70s at music school we called this style the Greek School of Tone Clusters, see also Pendericki, Sanakis, (spelling?)

  • @Ear4Beauty Xenakis I think

  • @nazipose72z Wierd, at least !

  • I wanna say classical, but I never heard classical music like this before until I saw 2001 a space odyssey.

  • Wow! Without a doubt the most terror-inspiring music I have ever heard. Superb!

I'm more than happy to watch mediaplayer visuals to it, after all, to put visuals that suit the music would probably scar us all for life :)

  • This is absolutely horrible..... Ligeti's work deserves more that a stupid Windows visualizer.... VERY BAD!

  • What visuals would you like to suggest as an alternative? All sensible ideas (as if!), are welcome! The visual was chosen because it responded to the subtle or otherwise nuances of the audio recording.

Just a suggestion, send me some pics of your puppy, and/or pics of you and your idiotic college friends. I will make a special version just for you!

Best of luck with growing up!

  • I AM A MUSIC SNOB AND I THINK GOOD VISUALS MUST ALWAYS ACCOMPANY GOOD MUSI-

    wait....

  • @ShibuBaka So is that approval or disapproval? What happened to the end of your message, i am amused and intrigued?

  • I was making fun of yurodivy1906. My bad :P

  • lol xDDDD

  • @ShibuBaka - Considering that Ligeti's music doesn't really require visuals, at all, why not just commend the person who was good enough to post it and enjoy it without necessarily watching?

  • Actual visuals maybe, for a start. No, not a college geek, dork, retard or music snob even. You were the one looking for approval and I could not give that to you. Sorry you wanted to attack me... shows maturity for a man your age. Just for the record I have a Bachelor in Music Composition and a Masters in Instrumental Conducting.

  • @yurodivy1906 So you retract your previous assertion that you are a music snob? It was YOU who attacked ME, so i am entitled to retaliate! If that's a problem to you, then don't attack, simple isn't it?

I really do not care whether you approve or not, just that you can back up your shallow criticism with valid, alternative proposals, which you have thus far failed to do.

Your dubious qualifications (boasting),are pointless in regard to youtube music visuals, sorry, but sadly in your case true!

  • @door2yourheart Alright, I'll do this a year later.

The problem: You simply recorded an automated Windows Visualizer from the media suite. That you are posting this as your own is what causes my issues. It is not your music, that is clear from the video discription. What is not clear: You did not state once, that you just sat in front of your PC and recorded its automatic reactions to music. THIS is why I am not sensing any real weight in your argument. Sorry, but it is fact.

  • @yurodivy1906 Ever so sorry to have disappointed you! I'll try not to do it again!

  • @yurodivy1906 music is for listening, not for watching.

  • @door2yourheart To be honest I Think the visuals seem more at home when looking back to Ligeti's work being used on 2001. They are reminiscient of the Star Gate, and looks perfectly fine to me. The extraneous noises in the background are fairly distracting though :)

  • "Visuals?" Since this piece is aggressively orchestral... when I see a concert I am always struck by the juxtaposition of the black suited musicians with the warm colors of the wooden floors, instruments and lighting. Perhaps wood grain (string instruments) slowly tracked as if it represented the flow of sound? Musical instruments viewed differently than they normally are - to match the sound being presented differently than it normally is. Yes?

  • @door2yourheart Way late, but I'd suggest using the Milkdrop viz plugin that comes with Winamp. Infinitely better than this sophomoric stuff.

  • Well if you do better why dont you compose a music video for this ATMOSPHERES!

And lets see how you do....

  • gotta love that mircropolyphonic shit

  • how do you record the windows media player effects?

  • I just set the music to play on media player, turn the sound right down and just film the screen using a camcorder on a tripod.

Thats why you can hear some unintended sounds of me doing things while it films........the odd click or chink, and at one point, pouring wine into a glass! Must have left my mic on!

The actual music was added to the video from the music file.

  • Sublime, just sublime, and excuse the pun but its just so atmospheric!

  • Have you got easy TAB guitar for this?

  • LOL!

  • Actually, I'm working on an easy TAB ukelele version of Stockhausen's Gruppen... It's going to take me ages!

  • Who said "cluster chord" ? ;-)

    Bravo Maestro.

  • Viva la musica. Este tio es un genio.

  • Thank you for posting this!

  • Do you have the sheet music for this?

  • the will of the universe!

  • I have disputed WMGs claim that the audio copyright is infringed. As a result, well just listen and enjoy!

  • WMG are Warner Music Group

Drop them a line to let them know how you feel? No need to be polite with scum like this.

    wmg com

  • Hi! I have disputed WMGs copyright claim, and the music is now back on!

  • Congratulations! Glad the music is back.

But I am still never going to buy a Warner Music Group product ever again :)

  • I regret for that.

  • WMG: the utter ugly and disgusting collection of people whom mind is extremely poor.

I feel pity for them. Brainless idiots all. They have nothing, but Ligeti have had his genius and made a masterpiece. Who are you, WMG to disallow to listen my fellow countryman's music? Suck you off.

You can start trembling with fear, pirates are in the EU parlament. And if you continue to show this attitude, more and more people will help them, help the pirates against YOU. Fuck you WMG.

  • Thank you, i totally agree! Its probably just their Jewish/capitalist mentality!

  • what the fuck is WMG exactly?

  • Warner Music Group

  • WMG.. szánalmas

  • i dont know what you said, but i agree with you

  • There should be a collective Global action brought against WMG. Art Killers! Culture is in a state of crisis. What if Athens said, "You are not allowed to look at the Parthenon." WMG - your hubris has brought you down. You suck.

  • caguenlaleche, el audio era muy bueno.

  • WMG: FAIL.

  • WMG apparently have a bunch of fanatical fascist pigs running things now. I hope they go bankrupt and become defunct. They got me too, btw.

  • records were made originally because it was simply impossible to perform at every venue. Bands made their money mainly from performances, the cost of a record was only ever meant to cover the cost of making it, and of course a little went to the companys who produced it, and the artists. today, the artists still make money from performances mainly, while the companys make a large amount of money from Cd/ record sales- much more than neccessary. thats why the WMG are arseholes

  • fuck WMG fuckin gays

  • HEY WMG!

I AM NEVER GOING TO BUY ANY OF "YOUR"

    RECORDS

    kthx?

  • OMG! now that you flagged this video for copyright content i'm so not GOING TO DOWNLOAD IT FROM ANY OF THE 300000000 SITES WERE I CAN GET IT. ¬¬

  • stupid swines... catch real criminals..

  • thanks WMG I'm going to start running to go and buy the record...

no, no, don't wait for me. it's a joke, don't matter what you do I can get it free.

  • The clowns at WMG are shooting themselves in the foot by cutting off their content from an entirely new and interested audience. I'm all for fair compensation for the composer/artist, but the labels seem to be more interested in exacting their pound of flesh from YouTube than in actually running a productive business these days. Repeal the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act and institute compulsory licensing NOW!

  • WMG. rats

  • Great music ! It changed my life

  • One of the most important music of my life.

  • Spectacular and perfect, there's a reason Kubrick chose it for his greatest of masterpieces, 2001. Ligeti himself wanted the piece to convey a sense of overwhelming and expansive space. This piece sounds like the feeling of being a human being in a vast universe that dwarfs both our corporeal extent and our understanding. Well done! Bravo!

  • spacemusic...makes me thinking about mysterious things. my father came in and said: "What the hell is this?" I said: "modern music by ligeti". He said: "That's no music!" many people never will understand the ambition beyond that music, they don't have an idea

  • Man you opened a coca-cola near 3:00 ! Don't deny I know this noise

  • It wasn't Coke, it was either cheap, screw top wine or the fizzy water i added to it. I much prefer that combination to Coke, i rarely drink the stuff.

Thanks for your comment tho, and well done for spotting the sound!

  • aahahahaha

  • Well just enjoy your "nice" music then, eh! Thanks for the view.

  • stuffed cats on the keyboard=charlemagne palestine

  • this is...whaeeeee!!!!!!!

    thanks for posting it, door2yourheart!!!!!

  • this is great

  • 4:46 sounds like a swarm of bees... such weird and amazing music. Thanks for posting.

  • yeah like a swarm of bees...it's scary and strange, far away from my ordinary music-experience

  • this is so hard to put together!

  • Love the Windows media visualisations! hehe

    Also the work, very cool.

  • Lol, you sussed it! I just pointed the cam at Windows visualisations and added it to the audio!

  • grandiose!

  • well, after Bartok, Hungary gave Ligeti to revolutionize music, but it seems people are not yet as receptive to Ligeti's innovations as they are to Bartok, maybe it should elapse a few decades to people finally understand his music

  • Spooky!!! and amazing!!! i love it!!!

  • 2001 Odissea nello spazio

  • GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 54 strings, noone playing the same note. Can you imagine just how frustrating it would be to perform this?

  • At least in this one they are playing instruments. Some of his other works require similar textures from vocalists. That said, I am sure a performance of this piece is no easy task...

  • Yeah, I know the man simply from his work in Kubrick's films, and in Requiem I believe there is nothing except the vocalizations... I could only imagine the frustration...

  • There are instruments in the Requiem.

  • love it love it, but still, i feel little uncomfortable in some parts of it as it is so mysterious

  • I love this piece but I've always found those high notes from 3:30-3:50 to be brutal.

  • But that's the best part. If you stare too often at the ground and forget to look up, you miss all of the heavenly glory.

Just something to think about on a future listen.

  • U r perfectly right door, dont worry about a single mind opinion, Im luca tancredi on Facebook, add me, the one with blue shirt and cover wearing sun glasses

    night

  • This music, all music, produces images inside us, these images r nosense and tend to influence our free streams of thinking

  • Sorry giandoom, i was just experimenting with music and images on YouTube. You can always scroll up so you dont see the images if you dont want to see them. I am all for free streams of thinking, but as this is a video site, i thought i would post a visual interpretation.

  • Excellent point. Great music though, thanks for the upload

  • "produces images inside us"

that's because of yourself and not the music. We feel the need to produce images to interpret our feelings. And how the hell does that hinder free thinking. In my opinion it encourages it

  • What wine was it ;)

  • It was probably 9% German wine half and half with fizzy water. My usual mid week beverage. Plenty of it tho!

  • Thanks, sounds interesting. I'll try it!

Oh and... uh, gorgeous music btw lol.

  • I like to listen to Ligeti and Coltrane when I drink wine.

  • this song fit very well on 2001!

  • It was in 2001: A Space Odyssey in the Overture.

  • Oh dear! At about 3.00 you can hear me opening a bottle of wine and pouring it!

  • true. maybe it's on purpose.

  • it matches well! are you trying to to a John Cage remix of Ligeti??? ;)

  • Yes, I can. You shouldn't have recorded from speakers (since you can pick up extraneous sounds - obviously). Otherwise, it's a strangely beautiful video.

  • mil imágenes en sonido.

  • Produce la sensación de estarse enfrentando con lo desconocido.

  • La música de la era espacial.

  • y this is ture. try to compose something like this. it's not easy. sometimes its very difficult to hear witch instruments are playing. for example at the beginning.

  • Yes, in his soundscapes he seems to deliberately blurr the definition between the sounds of individual instruments.

  • this is a fantastic composition and one of the best composers of the 20th century. this music has so much expression... sometimes i just relax and listen to this music and try to imagine what the composer wants to say with this music.

ps: sorry for my english I'm from germany^^

  • Thank you for your comment! What i admire about Ligeti is his endless exploration of sound. Your English is excellent!

  • Video is not from 2001!

  • mistico 2001 odissea nello spazio

  • Gracia your comment

  • NICE ONE MATE KTF
