The visuals for Ligeti's 'Atmospheres' cannot be made by computer. Only the mind can really conceive proper visuals for this work. Yet I do like what was done here.
@windstorm1000 He wasn't picked to do the 2001 score. Kubrik used his Requiem and Lux Aeterna pieces without asking him. While he greatly admired the film, he was somewhat (understandably) irritated by the fact that his music was placed alongside that of Johann and Richard Strauss.

this music made people be revolts, can't understand I think which we need to open our minds to listen it and try to live with, and not repudiate its existence. So there is what I think.
I thankyou for putting this here on youtube, but having read the comments on this page, I must confess I didnt bother looking at the video. Ligeti's music means something personal to ME, and therefore MY visuals are what is mattering atm :)
wat about the video? im purist, and i think that the best music is done when the only mean of expression is music, that way all emotion is focused into it rather than supporting or being supported by other means. So i wouldnt mind if the screen was black, and this is pretty close to it...
As a first year musicology student, this work won me for modern music. I saw the terribly complex score, and instead of the expected cacophony I heard this sublime "blur" effect. Not Stockhausen, not Cage, but Ligeti was the greatest visionary of the past century, only he wrote modern music that made you forget it was modern!
Grande windows media, qué calidad original. En realidad este tipo se pasó para elevar a niveles cuánticos el sonido y el vídeo. Se debe haber psado mucho tiempo pensándolo para editar este voluminoso cortometraje.
Second idea are american sailors trapped in sunk ships in Pearl Harbor. Flicker of lite, begging, cursing, praying, yelling, alone, water in chambers, sufocation, heat, fingernails on rusty metal, no escape, no hope, no peace, no god, no rememberance, no glory, no body. Enough life to suffer, to think of nothingness, screeching of metal, water echo and slow death. 17 and still a virgin. Virgin forever in nothing. No response from god. No meaning, no comfort.
Use the footage of pits with dead people after the shooting. Use the same footage (mass pit in russia filmed by germans) so you'll have continuity, then zoom in dead people (think of way to hide the big grain), simulate panoramic ride thru dead but in zoom stay only in the highest zoom so that a eye ore a finger is something allmost unrecognizible. Use slow mo but think of the way that audience does not recognize it so that the parts of the dead perpetuousliy go on and on, like there is no end.
Very nice AVS effects, thank you. The llama kicks again. Very modern interpretation(if the avs studio is still considered modern). A great visualization to accompany Gyorgy Ligeti.

Hey music dorks... haha, why all the hating?? has anyone realised that this is a piece of music?? who gives a fuck about the visuals, this is about the sound... KABLAH!!!!
Sorry, but I happen to agree with yurodivy1906 - if you would like to see some fantastic visuals that fit well with Ligeti's music, I'd suggest watching Kubrik's 2001... (which you mention in your spiel about the video so no doubt you are familiar).
I can stick the piece in itunes and turn on the visualiser and get a similar result (or is this how you generated your video? No offence intended).
It is possible that history will look back on music of the 20th Century as full of tension, anxiety, uneasiness the collective subconscious of a people who realize the push of a button could destroy civilizations in an instant.
Symphonic. 20th Perhaps Modern Avant Garde, in the early 70s at music school we called this style the Greek School of Tone Clusters, see also Pendericki, Sanakis, (spelling?)
What visuals would you like to suggest as an alternative? All sensible ideas (as if!), are welcome! The visual was chosen because it responded to the subtle or otherwise nuances of the audio recording.
Just a suggestion, send me some pics of your puppy, and/or pics of you and your idiotic college friends. I will make a special version just for you!
@ShibuBaka - Considering that Ligeti's music doesn't really require visuals, at all, why not just commend the person who was good enough to post it and enjoy it without necessarily watching?
Actual visuals maybe, for a start. No, not a college geek, dork, retard or music snob even. You were the one looking for approval and I could not give that to you. Sorry you wanted to attack me... shows maturity for a man your age. Just for the record I have a Bachelor in Music Composition and a Masters in Instrumental Conducting.

@door2yourheart To be honest I Think the visuals seem more at home when looking back to Ligeti's work being used on 2001. They are reminiscient of the Star Gate, and looks perfectly fine to me. The extraneous noises in the background are fairly distracting though :)
"Visuals?" Since this piece is aggressively orchestral... when I see a concert I am always struck by the juxtaposition of the black suited musicians with the warm colors of the wooden floors, instruments and lighting. Perhaps wood grain (string instruments) slowly tracked as if it represented the flow of sound? Musical instruments viewed differently than they normally are - to match the sound being presented differently than it normally is. Yes?
I just set the music to play on media player, turn the sound right down and just film the screen using a camcorder on a tripod.
Thats why you can hear some unintended sounds of me doing things while it films........the odd click or chink, and at one point, pouring wine into a glass! Must have left my mic on!
The actual music was added to the video from the music file.

records were made originally because it was simply impossible to perform at every venue. Bands made their money mainly from performances, the cost of a record was only ever meant to cover the cost of making it, and of course a little went to the companys who produced it, and the artists. today, the artists still make money from performances mainly, while the companys make a large amount of money from Cd/ record sales- much more than neccessary. thats why the WMG are arseholes

Spectacular and perfect, there's a reason Kubrick chose it for his greatest of masterpieces, 2001. Ligeti himself wanted the piece to convey a sense of overwhelming and expansive space. This piece sounds like the feeling of being a human being in a vast universe that dwarfs both our corporeal extent and our understanding. Well done! Bravo!
spacemusic...makes me thinking about mysterious things. my father came in and said: "What the hell is this?" I said: "modern music by ligeti". He said: "That's no music!" many people never will understand the ambition beyond that music, they don't have an idea

Thanks for your comment tho, and well done for spotting the sound!
well, after Bartok, Hungary gave Ligeti to revolutionize music, but it seems people are not yet as receptive to Ligeti's innovations as they are to Bartok, maybe it should elapse a few decades to people finally understand his music
At least in this one they are playing instruments. Some of his other works require similar textures from vocalists. That said, I am sure a performance of this piece is no easy task...
Yeah, I know the man simply from his work in Kubrick's films, and in Requiem I believe there is nothing except the vocalizations... I could only imagine the frustration...
U r perfectly right door, dont worry about a single mind opinion, Im luca tancredi on Facebook, add me, the one with blue shirt and cover wearing sun glasses
Sorry giandoom, i was just experimenting with music and images on YouTube. You can always scroll up so you dont see the images if you dont want to see them. I am all for free streams of thinking, but as this is a video site, i thought i would post a visual interpretation.
that's because of yourself and not the music. We feel the need to produce images to interpret our feelings. And how the hell does that hinder free thinking. In my opinion it encourages it
Yes, I can. You shouldn't have recorded from speakers (since you can pick up extraneous sounds - obviously). Otherwise, it's a strangely beautiful video.
y this is ture. try to compose something like this. it's not easy. sometimes its very difficult to hear witch instruments are playing. for example at the beginning.
this is a fantastic composition and one of the best composers of the 20th century. this music has so much expression... sometimes i just relax and listen to this music and try to imagine what the composer wants to say with this music.
So ominous, I love it~ >_<

well, after Bartok, Hungary gave Ligeti to revolutionize music, but it seems people are not yet as receptive to Ligeti's innovations as they are to Bartok, maybe it should elapse a few decades to people finally understand his music

54 strings, noone playing the same note. Can you imagine just how frustrating it would be to perform this?
Deppizzymo 3 years ago
At least in this one they are playing instruments. Some of his other works require similar textures from vocalists. That said, I am sure a performance of this piece is no easy task...
somedude1129 3 years ago
Yeah, I know the man simply from his work in Kubrick's films, and in Requiem I believe there is nothing except the vocalizations... I could only imagine the frustration...
Deppizzymo 3 years ago
There are instruments in the Requiem.

love it love it, but still, i feel little uncomfortable in some parts of it as it is so mysterious
terezadolezalova 3 years ago
I love this piece but I've always found those high notes from 3:30-3:50 to be brutal.
crepesoftime 3 years ago
But that's the best part. If you stare too often at the ground and forget to look up, you miss all of the heavenly glory.
Just something to think about on a future listen.

This music, all music, produces images inside us, these images r nosense and tend to influence our free streams of thinking
giandoom 3 years ago 2
Sorry giandoom, i was just experimenting with music and images on YouTube. You can always scroll up so you dont see the images if you dont want to see them. I am all for free streams of thinking, but as this is a video site, i thought i would post a visual interpretation.

Excellent point. Great music though, thanks for the upload

"produces images inside us"
that's because of yourself and not the music. We feel the need to produce images to interpret our feelings. And how the hell does that hinder free thinking. In my opinion it encourages it

What wine was it ;)
goobleglob 3 years ago
It was probably 9% German wine half and half with fizzy water. My usual mid week beverage. Plenty of it tho!

Thanks, sounds interesting. I'll try it!
Oh and... uh, gorgeous music btw lol.

I like to listen to Ligeti and Coltrane when I drink wine.

true. maybe it's on purpose.

it matches well! are you trying to to a John Cage remix of Ligeti??? ;)
emouch1 3 years ago

Timpani4ever 3 years ago
Yes, in his soundscapes he seems to deliberately blurr the definition between the sounds of individual instruments.
door2yourheart 3 years ago
this is a fantastic composition and one of the best composers of the 20th century. this music has so much expression... sometimes i just relax and listen to this music and try to imagine what the composer wants to say with this music.
ps: sorry for my english I'm from germany^^

Thank you for your comment! What i admire about Ligeti is his endless exploration of sound. Your English is excellent!
